From AFL site...

Chol qualifies as a free agent having previously been delisted by the Tigers and re-rookied at the end of 2018. Should he move, the Tigers would receive a free agency compensation pick dependent on the size of his new deal.
Sign him up! Perfect partner for Marshall & can learn so much from an experienced Ryder

If we get Chol I won’t be happy.
We showed this year that we are at our best with a dominant tap ruckman. Chol is like Marshall who is a forward who can ruck.

We need someone who can do the majority of the rucking with Marshall coming in against the second stringer. Since Ryder is staying on this isn’t the year to look for one as no one is going to be happy chilling in the wings for a year. Get a 12 month stop gap in case of breaks/injury and look for a true ruck next season.

How will a new recruit play well enough to get ahead of Ryder and Marshall?
Get as many possessions as he can, the same as any other player in the magoos. You keep playing well then you get picked.
So is Paddy going to play 22 games is he? Marshall was playing injured this year apparently. Hunter and McKernan played 11 games this year due to those injuries.

Havent we learnt our lesson about stop gap ruckmen?

yeah 10 games is probably not enough for Paddy, but maybe more like 14? This is exactly what GWS did with Mumford
This would still leave 8 senior games. But 100% agree that more games Ryder plays, the more we win 1631066196959.png

Yep, but if a player has a choice between being a back up or going to a club where he's a genuine chance to be the first choice ruck they will more than likely choose the latter you would think.

Preuss is the exception here and that didn't go well for him.

Left field -
Recruit Chol as back up Ruck - but also see how he goes as KPD?
He has the build, athleticism, can play one on one and would make a great intercept mark, link up kick player.
Just a thought!

I think Ryder is carrying an injury though , where Mumford has just got wear and tear. I would presume Paddy has a bit of wear and tear as well at 33 years of age. So he has a double whammy.

We can’t rely on finding a ruck as good as Ryder.
Improve the midfield and there is nothing wrong with Marshall as ruck.

cats and dogs both in prelims without a good ruckman.

Yeah, so if he plays when they're injured then he's third in line. But you said he should play well enough to be second in line.

I am all for letting Seb and dunny walk and dipping into the following names or draft to replace them;

Dawson - then we can stop trying to manufacture a tall wingman.
Parker
Wallis
Hewitt
Lipinski
Narkle
Dow
Dawson / if he doesn't resign with Swans he will go to Sth Australia
Parker / gone
Wallis /
Hewitt / Carlton
Lipinski / Pies
Narkle / Tigers
Dow /

Our free agents not declaring early effects any negotiations with any player we may be looking at.
With our current picks I fully expect they will just mainly be getting kids in the draft and if Ross goes they will look at a ruck like Flynn or Briggs if not hope they get Chol as a free agent.

Also any ruckman that comes to St Kilda will know he will be getting a game - Ryder only played 12 this year and at one stage he looked like he might retire and the year before he played 14 and broke down in the finals.
The last thing we need is relying on him and he does a Achilles or Hamstring in preseason or goes down before the finals.
I would bet they have a ruck lined up.

It will be tough to find another Ryder. I think the idea of playing Marshall in the ruck is becoming more palatable since the rise of Sharman. If Cooper can effectively take Rowans spot in the forward line, then why not

To me he's not really an answer to the ruck. He's handy as a ruck KP type but he's sort of more of the same as Marshall where his athleticism and around the ground work is good but his ruck craft is just okay. I'd prefer a dominant ruck like Downie or someone with experience who can just fill in when needed. He retired due to anxiety issues and was struggling but if he's a bit older and more likely to play perhaps he'd be in a better space. He was young and a long way from home before.

I'd nearly have Chol as CHF/Ruck and Marshall CHB/ruck

Read my posts properly. You have contributed nothing to the discussion apart from stupid nitpicking questions and comments.

You said:

"They will only be third in line if they play to that. If the new recruit is playing well then he moves up the pecking order."

But then you said he'll only play if they're injured. So no, they'll still be third in line.

Which is why we won't get a quality third ruckman, so there's no point discussing it. We'll either keep Hunter, or we'll get someone of similar state-league quality. IMO we should keep Hunter, he's a known quantity.

Yeah Known that he's not AFL Standard!

I guess Nathan VARDY has been rejected by everyone here? I just noticed yesterday that Eagles cant fit himn in the cap had to let him go. Already been talked about??? Sorry if so! Is he any good for our purposes? He does have injury cloud so he'd fit right in!
