Well that's where you went astray.

The media are fixated on St Kilda's 'big money' recruits & warble endlessly about Hill, Hanners & Crouch.

Hill has 2 years on an $800k deal
Hanners 1 year on a reduced deal (from what I've heard its around $550-600k)
Crouch on a bargain basement, coke assisted $550-600k deal.

Compare that to other clubs with blokes on a $1m+ and multiple others on $700+

Our best players (Steele & Roma) are in line for decent increases next season which could easily come from Hanners' expiring contract. Winx is locked in on a long term deal that will be a bargain in years 3 & 4.

We've shed plenty of cap space this year & will have the $$$ to spend either now or next year. Plus, as Joffaboy mentioned, we've already taken our 9% covid cut so are in a better place than most clubs.
McGovern on 1m makes my eyes water and I'm not even a fan of wce

Well may you laugh, but what if HANNERS plays 15 to 20 games next year, no sign of any real injury...is professional, cool and General like. Why wouldn't you give him a one year contract the next year at a human level wage, should he be interested in going around again? I think he'll be 31 in Feb of 2022 so 32 in 2023...well within the realm of possibility! Luke HODGE was 35 wasn't he?
Hanners won't play 15 games next year, he will get injured at the start of the year play the last 5 games and get another year.

Fremantle has expressed preliminary interest in Gold Coast midfielder Will Brodie.
He has played 25 games in his 5 seasons at the Suns.
He won the Suns VFL Player of the Year award this year with an average of 31.7 disposals and six tackles per game.

Looks like we keep Billings and Ross. So, with that in mind, the options are...

Trade/Keep: Battle, Long
Trade/Delist: Lonie and Kent.
Delist: Hunter

Assuming we don't trade anyone, we have a 1st and a 3rd. So we get;

Best available mid with 1st
Owens and Windhager

DFA: Schenslong
UFA: Chol

I wouldn't be unhappy with that result. We add mids, keep our depth and get some key pieces on the cheap

I like your thinking here.
I would like to see either Kent and Long stay, as speedy pressure CHF’s.

Trade; Webster, Lonie, Battle, Clav and Billings (Cats or Port)

Pick up enough points for a late first/early second.

Draft best available mids (or Aliir or wangeneen-milera)

Also for a roughy draft pick - Jack Peris.

I would do everything we can this year to move up the board and take Callaghan would be the dream. Would need pick 2 I reckon. Perfect mid to add to our mix. If that’s not achievable, I would try to trade out of our mid first position and get two late firsts and have two shots at a gun mid as they all seem pretty much the same to me after Callaghan

Agree about Callaghan. He'd be ideal for us.

Not keen on trading down though. Looks to me like we are more likely to get a gun mid where we are.

One of Hobbs, Sonsie, Roberts should fall there. They seem a lot safer then the players likely to be available half a dozen picks later.

Billings is the only guy we could get something in the way of compensation , but by what is being said he is staying , however anything is possible until the contract is signed.
Webster, Lonie, Battle, Clav - no trade value at this current time due to reduced lists and salary cap and as been mentioned before Webster is more use to us than a 3rd round draft pick.

Jack Peris is a academy kid so if we want him we have him , will cost nothing and will most probably go in rookie draft if he gets drafted at all.

At this stage I fully expect teams are waiting around to see who gets squeezed out of teams and a few teams could well be offering experienced players to reduce cap problems - Eagles would love to clear a highly paid player off there list - Gaff , McGovern , Yeo , Shuey - just one of these would help them out considerably.

Seen a few phantom drafts with a number of mids falling to 14 (16) which is the pick I would target. Sinn, Sonsie, Chessar, Rachele, Goater all been mentioned around 16 with Hobbs probably the exception consistently being touted as a top 6 selection. Ward might be a good one at our natural 9 (11) but looks pretty similar to those mentioned above. The second pick 18 (20) could be used on say Sam Butler or another slider, even that bolter Aleer (KPD) who looks ridiculous.

I get why people would want to hold onto the higher pick, but with the following drafts to be filled with kids missing a full two years of their development, they will be seriously hit and miss with an overall drop in quality I would think. As such, two shots in the top 20 this year to me would be a great result. (also prevents two teams from selecting one of our NGA's at that crucial point in the draft). Still would prefer to shoot for Callaghan though as I'd rather have 1 all round star than 2 good mids when we have a glut of the ordinary in there currently.

I do. The only time I go on that website is to see if Tony74 or Jaxons has posted anything lol.
Jaxons hardly posts there anymore, the ferals couldn't handle his ITK status and poo'd on him at every opportunity. Tony 74 cops a bit of crap as well so he likes to post with a forked tongue, which often has posters asking him to "please explain".

Agree Bird use our 1st round pick on best available , time to let the recruiters have a go at someone higher in the pecking order.

Yep, Ward is one I forgot to mention.

I think we'd be running the risk of everyone grabbing the genuine mids and us being left with another flanker we'd hope to turn into a mid.

It's a huge risk when we know what we want will he there at 9 IMO.

I'm of the broad opinion we need to be drafting best-available, try to pick up the NGAs, and not tinker too much more with our core unless it's a significant upgrade. We need to try and get some stability going, with a move to the scalpel, rather than the chainsaw, in order to push to serious contention.

We've turned over so much of the list in the past 3 years, that I wonder if some of our in-game meltdowns are contributed to by a lack of cohesion under pressure. I'm not saying we didn't NEED to have that turnover (we absolutely did), but we need to try and have our core basically set this season, and start rotating via the bottom-6 of the match selection, unless we're bringing in a "generational" type of upgrade. Get the core thinking as one, and use the last 6 spots + sub to get games into the emerging players. Our main "key" retirement next year is likely to be Ryder, so we know we need to plan around that, but I'm hoping we're not actively changing a quarter of our top-16, unless it's emerging players pushing the old-stagers down to depth roles.

Dont reckon we need to look at making anymore delistings or trading out for picks unless we have someone in play that we need currency/space to trade for.
Only heard about McLean and Cox so far. Hope like hell it is not Cox. McLean I would take for a future 3rd.

By my count we have 4 senior list spots and 1 rookie spot and space for 2 Cat.B rookies if we want
1. Pick 9 - Sonsie or Hobbs are my preference
2&3. Pick 46, 64 - Windhager, Owens
4. DFA - Schlensog sounds good from what I have read

R1. Best rookie at Pick 9 in Rookie Draft or leave for a Mid Season Draft Spot

Cat.B Rookie spots for 2 of Beilby, Peris, Kyle assuming they are still available and we rate them.

Yeah they are a mile ahead of us with their list. They were always ahead of us with this list on elite talent, they just weren't putting it together. We aren't a list that is full of talent, performing well under our potential. Sure, we did underperform this year, but we're probably in that 5-8 range if we had the season we hoped for.

Melbourne have elite talent everywhere. Petracca, Oliver and Gawn are easily top 10 players in the comp. Arguably they are all top five. May and Lever both AA. Pickett has kicked 40 goals in his second season. Fritsch AA squad. Salem AA squad.

If we are to become a contender, it'll have to be closer to the Port Adelaide path than the Melbourne one.

Agree with this we have just as much depth as them two of the deepest lists in the AFL but they have five players that are arguably the best in their positions in the comp Gawn is the best ruck in the comp Petracca and Oliver are the best mids (excepting a fit Dusty) May and Lever the best tall defenders. We have Steele and that is it. King could become our second but probably still 2 years away from elite and Marshall at his best could be in the conversation but more likely a tier below. Port really only have Oliver in that category but their next tier is deeper than most. Dogs are closer with Bont the only genuine superstar and Naughton probably knocking on the door. Like Port their next tier is deep and they have the prospect of Jamara and Darcy to come. We need to keep filling that next tier and hope we get a few who exceed expectations and elevate to the elite category.

I will note though once you have enough high end talent and are winning more often than not it can make everyone look better than they actually are. Melbournes forward line is patchy at best on paper but they looked like superstars last night. How many of us would be keen on picking up Tom McDonald or Ben Brown or even Alex Neal Bullen or Charlie Spargo. Kosi and Fritsch would be nice but not worth selling the farm for. Things can change quickly once the chemistry clicks and players you didn’t rate all of a sudden look like stars.
