Wasn't it a second round pick?

The Dees still have a star from it while we have fu** all from Brendan Goddard in 2002 until Max King in 2018. That is criminally incompetent. fu** all rising stars, fu** all AAs from the guys picked in that era says we had a serious problem that was routinely ignored. Trout was an assistant coach who left and came back asking for a job so we just gave him something that wouldn't matter...the senior recruiting role. After John Beverage we sucked at drafting.

McCartin was pretty ordinary, a couple of times he looked like he might be coming good and then injured himself. I remember a guy from the TAC competition saying (about Paddy and Boyd) that taking a KPF from the TAC was dangerous because they couldn't zone so big kids could just throw smaller opponents out of the way and dominate.

McCartin was always going 1 or 2 let’s not rewrite history.

Ps , I'm not having a go at Sinc's , I'm just saying he wasn't elite in his first year , Same as Marshall wasn't elite in his first year and still isn't elite

This is getting stupid now.
Garry Ablett Junior wasn't either, neither was Robert Harvey, neither was Dustin Martin.

For most of them it takes work.

The only issue being is we are about to be bringing in 3 genuine midfield prospects, one of whom will be a top 10 pick. All three of them expecting to compete for Byrnes’ spot. Eventually might come too late for a value pick midfielder when there’s ready to go top midfield prospects coming through

Where Byrnes was picked is now irrelevant. Dane Swan, Leigh Montagna , Sam Mitchell.
Once drafted its, training form and talent.
Having 3 draft picks pushing out our boring experienced players has not been a problem i've seen in a loooooong time following the Saints.

I guess its living up to your user name, but personally i'll be very happy if we have the problem you describe.
I think 2002 Nick Dal Santo was pretty good, and Xav played a lot, but that was because our side was very ordinary.

If your team is down the bottom and you have early draft picks, you might play the kids because
a) they are the best in the draft
b) your team is garbage, that's why you are down the bottom.

If you just miss out of finals because the team has too many injuries, don't expect all your draftees to have a big impact.

I'm actually a fan and think he might be a gun but I try not to bank guys who've done fu** all as finished articles any more. I was sucked in by Acres and Billings and Newnes and all the other promising kids once. Now I'm old and jaded and know that only a handful of kids go on to play 100 games and a lot less than that go on to be A graders and then even less than that absolute top shelf stars. Early on I was raving about his disposal out of a contest too, he's got some great traits but he's just at the start of what could be a great career or an unfulfilled dream. oNly time will tell.

Jack Newnes becomes a 200 game AFL player next season.
That's not sucked in.
That's Richo wanting him to play a role , then delisting him when it wasn't the best role for him.

It was a monumental stuff up. Own it.
AFL site had an anonymous poll on which club recruiters would take who at pick 1 in the 2014 draft. It was 16 for Petracca & 2 for Paddy. Says it all. Our club played themselves.

EVERYONE had Paddy in the mix , top 10.
We stretched and took him early since Nick was in his mid 30s with his knee hanging on with Gaffer tape.
NOBODY said don't pick this guy he's going to get hit in the head too much.

That was meant to be a reply to someone who was talking about how some of our elite players weren't elite in their first year.
Dammit. Not going to look back.
I wasn't asking you specifically, but when you list those names as not being elite in their first year - despite how their career panned out, I just thought I'd throw out the question. I can't think of any player in the last 20 years that was elite from year 1.

Correct. I’m not exactly sure how to take your post. It’s like you are agreeing & arguing with me at the same time.

Plenty on here and SS including I think Big Mart that thought that a fat diabetic that would need luck to meet expectation was a poor choice. I remember people thinking that head knocks could be an issue early on even.

We wouldn’t accept the pile of sh*t Collingwood offered for Ball. McCartin had far greater forward smarts than Bruce but unfortunately concussions ruined him.

Melbourne also had four picks in that draft before they took Gawn.

Battle of the egos.
They offered the pick they gave up to take him.
We would have been better with that pick than without it.
If you want to play poker , i recommend playing with Lyon.

This joint was so pumped about Petracca when Brian speaking was saying we were gonna take him & then Brian came on here one day & said we’d changed to Petracca & the board absolutely lost their shit! It was hilarious. After that, people slowly started to convince themselves that it was the correct decision because Riewoldt was old/injured & Dogs paid big for Boyd.

I was always a bit sceptical because his highlights made him look like a slow, undersized, no agility key forward that had good hands & a booming peg.

He never looked like a top pick, more a second rounder. Even if concussion didn’t finish him he looked like he was missing too many elite traits to become a dominant forward at the top level.
