That kick from Leo in the back pocket when he kick it 45 on his left across the goals under immense pressure resonates with me.
Also when he kicked an absolute dart to Ro. Once he gets to 50-100 games he will be our best kicker.
No reason why he cant be our best kicker next year, it is up to him and the coaching staff ( midfield coach??) I think he is too light on at the moment though and needs a shedful of work. I am certainly not basing his potential on 1 or 2 good kicks in 7 games. Very early days.

I think most sides have a good outside mid but you have to be able to gut run.
The good teams are playing blokes that can gut run & at the same time win contests on the wing like Brayshaw, Mcluggage, Robinson, Bailey Smith, Josh Kelly, Langdon, Guthrie etc. Not many Hill/O’Brien level outside players these days. They don’t get games for good clubs.

This year should be a reality check for the coach, list manager & footy department. Does the club give a few blokes an extra chance to prove themselves or does the club move on some favourite sons? I hope we are ruthless & there’s a few shocks during the trade period. We need to accept we are nowhere near top 4/premiership contender & move on a few blokes to try & find some gold in the draft. I would have no problem if the club moved on Coffield, Battle, Long (a fav of mine), Ross, Dunstan (already gone) & Lonie. Accumulate a few 20-50 picks & let the Banker get to work. Need to cut deep. No use having a list of 40 C graders. Time to take some risks.
I actually dissagree on the no where near top 4. I’d argue on our day we are Definetly contesting in the 4 the issue was us loosing too many games we should’ve won.
Essendon game was a right off and the dogs and deez were the two teams who were really far ahead of us. Besides that I genuinely think we’re as good as the rest.

Usually in about their 3rd year players all of a sudden get through a preseason and look like footballers with real definition and a shedding of the fat layer. They look like they've transformed from kids into men. Clark still looks like he's just starting out. I don't need him to get stacked, he looks tired and like he could get cardio fit which would also tighten his body up.

He's certainly not alone at the Saints though.
mmm I suppose hopefully he can follow Steele’s body progression.

This is why I'd be avoiding anyone in the draft that doesn't win their own footy.

They are much more likely to be a bust at AFL level

And if we want to be contending for finals, we cant be relying on 3-4 first year draftees who have barely played in 2 seasons to be high on the depth chart next year.

His kicking is no where near as bad some you are making it out. He also brings more good to the list than bad. Having someone like him who can play inside, on the wing, on a flank or tagging someone is far from the worst thing to have on the list.

We are better having him than what we would be replacing him with as ready to go midfield depth
You are correct Brut , but my only worry is that now he definitely not happy at the club - taking so long to sign / reasons unknown , my problem with him staying is he could sow unrest and it spreads - happened with Dunstan by the looks and will most probably with Ross.
Keeping players that were looked upon as leaders and then when they are at their prime are battling to get a start in the lineup would be soul destroying for some of these guys - yeah depth , but not some guy who thinks he is hard done by and then start's criticizing the coaches like Dunstan did , doesn't create harmony in the squad , you need players fully determined to produce there best and if they can't make the 22 live with it or leave.

A guy like McKenzie efforts getting back to playing good football is so good , he knew what he had to do and did it with out laying blame to coaches or saying they didn't believe in me.

I hope he finds a new home.

We are far too inconsistent. Every team can have a few games a year where they play out of their skin. Even North & Adelaide had a couple of excellent games. Crows beat Demons. You are marked on your ability to consistently play to a high standard. We are quite a way back from that level.

Correct. If we wants out then it’s going to be a bloody difficult 12 months for him if he stays there next year. The media will drive him mad.
Not much media in gold coast. He'll be ok.

Yes I agree completely around the inconsistency. I’d say bad kicking cost us 3 games at least. However my point is I don’t think we’re that far off the pace.

Didnt Ratts or someone at the Club say there's been no interest in him?

Bit of a reality check for players to put themselves on the market only to receive little or no interest, you’d think.

If you look at a few games in isolation like against Brisbane & Sydney we look a top four team. Need to back it up & not drop the easy games though. Hard to trust this club to improve & find consistently after a decade in the wilderness (yes I know we won a final a year ago).

Definitely need consistency.
Maybe it’s a cop out but I am putting a large part of the pre-bye season down to injury. I think it threw us off a lot. Maybe a bit of complacency chucked in there too.

Second half of the season was a different beast and we ended the season on a positive note - so hopefully we continue from there.

I think we can definitely challenge for finals next year based on better draw & luck with injuries. But it’s such a step up from a finals side to playing & winning prelims. Quite a bit of work to do. I just hope we don’t try & take the easy option like buying another Hill type. Actually I’m certain we won’t. Looks like we will be focusing on the draft which is reassuring.

Case in point, Jack Billings. Hasn’t become the player we thought he’d become because he is far more outside than we thought he was. Transition to the midfield was & is never gonna happen
Ive been saying for years he should be played behind the ball like Daniel Rich. Either that or put him in the forward line but that would mean he’s competing for a spot with Sharman & Higgins (Butler plays different role) & unfortunately becomes depth!

All the messages coming from the club are saying draft and that’s why I don’t think there was any chance we were going after Ben this year. Get some great young mids, hopefully a back up ruck or KPD and we’re ready to go.

Still a lot of development to come from our existing young players hopefully. Many look very promising. I’d consider top 6 a win next season ( too optimistic, I don’t know) but finals are a must.

A lot of it has to do with everyone having tighter salary caps due to players having to take pay cuts and clubs moving deals around.

I don't think we'll see a lot free agency movement this year.

To be fair, the 2012 draft was terrible and probably a good chance to try and be creative. Aside from Brodie Grundy who slid by alot, there was not many decent players in the first 2 rounds past the top 10. Kristian Jaksch and Jessie Lonergan went at our original picks 12 and 13

I'm wondering how we'll look back on the 2020 draft. My hunch is that it will turn out to be a good one to have stayed out of. I really think that's a big part of why we got in so many old fogies - we didn't want a bar of it.

We've already been proven right by this year's midseason draft, and now the 2021 draft looks stacked. I reckon the only mistake was trading out our 2021 second as part of the Higgins deal. I think we would have been better trading out last year's first with a 2021 third rounder back , b/c I think there's a good chance you'll get a better player with this year's second than with last year's first.

To be fair, the bad kicking has cost us anywhere from 2-4 wins every season for the last decade, so that’s just us & is why we aren’t ‘close’ IMHO cos it still happens
