My perspective is positive and proactive Go hard, Go aggressive and Go early at the draft. Most of the rest, and I assume yourself, take the passive, soft, standard 3 draft pick approach- which is closer to a negative view on club management.

So the number of picks you take at a draft is indicative of how a person sees the effectiveness of a list?

Or perhaps we should have opened up an extra spot by trading Cripps because he was finished as a player

Seriously, we have people in roles that understand it better than anyone here

I am saying we have too many list holes to fill to win a premiership and we need to fill them quickly. I find our supporter base incredibly complacent given we finished 9th and went 4 and 8 in the back half of the season. The club needs to run harder and the supporter base needs to demand more and stop sitting back and think things will fall into place
Could you name said holes?

I think we are a key defender, 2 x quality small forwards, winger and a back up key position forward short. However we've got players to hopefully develop into these roles, going to the draft and bringing in Acres. I don't think our list is that far off. I think our issue is between the ears.

I'm not against looking at the value of a pick around our pick 10 this year versus what we get with our first rounder next year, with hope we might make the top 4. It might be a call to make on draft night if someone is still on the board that we like.

If carlton take more than 2 picks in the top 40 and improve our draft hand will that vindicate my view, in your opnion?

One can only marvel at your infallibility. I thought the pope was at the pinnacle of the infallibility scale but you've got him well covered.

Michael, I not suggesting 2 pick in the top 40 is enough or not, same if it was 3 or 4 picks.

But, to improve our draft hand, a number of scenarios need to transpire. I enjoy a hypothetical scenario of how it could happen, but it needs to be realistic and the kicker, another side needs to benefit from a hypothetical trade

So, you are the list manager, how do we add extra picks in the top 40, and which kids ( happy for you to name a few in that range) would you draft

Then tell me what level of output these kids will have in 2023

Austin over the past 2 years has had no list management pressure. He has tinkered around the edges on draft day.
Picking 10, 28 and 64 will not provide enough scope to fill our list holes before this group enters the veteran stage.
Austin needs to throw the marbles against the wall and trade to achieve 5 picks in the top 40 by using future picks, taking on a salary dump or trading a player.

If we walk out with Acres and 3 draftees, that is a fail for mine

What are our holes outside the wing positions.

No comment on Max Gruzewski?

Terrific leap - reminds me of Port's Georgiades....
Love to get Gruzewski, two fabulous marks in first quarter, with resultant goals. His marking reminding me of Bosustow in his heyday. Has terrific X-factor. He then kinda faded out ot the game, but with an AFL preseason behind him to get him ultra-fit could be a real star. I'm excited with him.

Toddled down to Docklands (Spiderpants Stadium) for a look at the game yesterday.

Cam McKenzie - Solid without being special. Reasonable endurance, but pace isn't anything to write home about. Not sure he provides anything we don't already have tbh so I'd look to spend our Pick elsewhere.

Will Ashcroft - He's an accumulator like Walsh & Rowell, but not quite in that class. Enormous endurance levels. Others will sail past him as they develop.

Darcy Edmends - Played a really good game finding the ball down back and running it up through the wing. Reasonable kick, makes good decisions, knows when to leave his man or when to stay, when to mark and when to spoil. Bit above average pace, but has good endurance and one who was able to continue running when others depleted their tank.

Elijah Tastas - Literally just came back after a very long injury layoff. Strong natural endurance as the longer the game went the more of a factor he became. Helped McKenzie & Ashcroft drag Metro across the line through willing the ball forwards by any means possible. Whoever drafts this kid will love him.

Caleb Windsor - I was really impressed with Windsor. Played a very similar role to Edmends and both complemented each other very well. Knows when to spoil and when to intercept, kicking is OK and decision-making is solid. Like Edmends, he isn't afraid to take off with the ball in hand to gain another 15-20 metres before passing it off to a team mate. You can't fit everyone into the the first 2 rounds, so this kid could well be a bargain for someone out in the 3rd Round. Me likey.

Lewis Hayes - Despite his height, he is only slightly built so I wouldn't expect him to play much, if at all in his first year. Will need a couple of years patience similar to what Geelong did SDK. Didn't do his draft chances any disservice yesterday. Good decision-maker with quality foot skills and reasonable pace.

Josh Weddle - Solid game without being spectacular. Alternated with Hayes on Cadman, but struggled on the taller opponent. Weddle is very competent at his role, has solid foot skills, is competitive in the air and plays within his limitations. Is very close to his AFL playing weight so I would query the amount of improvement he has left given he's unlikely to put on much size.

Matthew Jefferson - Was more impressed with him that I thought I'd be. Surprisingly competitive and nimble at ground level and doesn't need much more room than a shoebox to generate a shot at goal to create something from nothing.

Hayden O'Keefe - Good project ruck who'll take 4-5 years of development. Good pace without looking like he's lumbering around, solid overhead and reasonable kick. Copped some massive hits during this game, one in which you could literally hear the smack of contact around the entire ground, but he just shook them off and got on with it. 4th Round or Rookie.

Jaxon Binns - Absolute running machine and played a good game. Comfortably had the best endurance levels of anyone on the park. Does follow up for multiple possessions during a chain of play. Did hang onto the ball too long at times burning options further up the ground or forcing them to lead wide, but should learn from that with some astute coaching. Could also do with tidying up his kicking a little, but this is only a minor quibble in his case. It's by no means terrible or anything. Could go anywhere from mid 2nd to late 3rd.

Aaron Cadman - Easily to best KPF in the draft. Good in contested marking situations and good on the lead. Kicking action is solid and repeatable. Missed some shots by a small margin, which is nothing to worry about. Will be a big unit when he fills out.

Harley Reid - Reminds me of Luke Hodge in that you can play him anywhere, even at full-forward where he has absolutely no business belonging yet he is strong enough to hold out Hayes to take a contested mark. Also not afraid to give an opponent a clip around the ears or mousch when no one's looking so it wan't surprising to see him involved whenever there's a scuffle. Like Hodge he is a high impact per possession player wherever you put him and at this stage he'd have to be early favourite for No.1 Pick next year. He's what I'd call "a footballer's footballer".

Mitch Syzbkwoski - I've got this kid much higher than most on my draft board in that I think he's a Top 10-15 Pick all-day-everyday. I didn't see anything yesterday to dissuade my opinion. FWIW I think we've got plenty of inside mids so I'm not sure what we'd do with another.

Jonti Schubach - What you don't see on TV is how smart this kid is and how he sets up the back 6 at every bounce. Plays as a High Half Back about 25-30m behind the contest and then arranges others to cover should the ball get past him. Quite often intercepts the ball in the air or off the deck then dishes it off by hand or a sharp left foot kick to one of Binns, Hollands or Konstanty. Reads the play exceptionally well and knows where to position himself for best effect. Has nice pace, a reasonable tank, solid left foot kick that finds it mark more often than not and can stick a tackle when required. 3rd Round onwards.

Jacob Konstanty - Is Schubach's solar oppositie. He's a very similar style of player to Corey Durdin or Gryan Miers. Give we also have Owies, Martin, Motlop & Honey I'm not sure we need another small/medium forward. Works hard in conjunction with his midfield and will be a good pickup for someone in the late 1st or early 2nd Round.

Ollie Hollands - I finds Hollands a really hard one to pin down. For the amount of ball he gets, where he gets it and how he gets it, Hollands really needs to make more of an impact with his possessions. The thing that concerns me is that once he gets to the next level he'll have even less time with the ball to make an impact before someone stops him in his tracks. My point being, he's no Phillipou, which is probably why I have him out around the 20 mark. Kicking is accurate, speed is fine and at least he knows how to find the ball. His work rate off the ball for a lightly built kid was really good and sticking a tackle was never something he shied away from.

Bailey Humphrey - Doesn't have a tank, work-rate off the ball is abysmal and his kicking is atrocious. Can hold his ground in a marking contest is very solid overhead for his size. Has enough of a burst of pace to give him a couple of metres on his opponent which he's capable of maintaining. Do we really need another inside mid/forward who can't kick???

James van Es - Reminds me of Liam Jones, the proverbial bull in a china shop. Great attack on the ball in the air and takes off down the ground with absolutely no idea what to next. Looks awesome when it all comes off, but then the next contest he lets the ball get behind him in an aerial contest and his inability to kill the ball costs his team a goal. Kicking can be an issue when the rush of adrenalin takes over. Effort is not an issue with him, but his outcomes could cost him a spot on draft night.

Coby Burgiel - Very similar player to Hollands, but a bit more physically advanced, has a bit more presence and more impact around the ground.

Just my unabashed, uneducated and unnerving opinion after watching the U18 final on Kayo replay earlier.

IMO - There was a lot of passengers who didn’t do their chances a lot of good. Some players were played out of position which didn’t help them also - read Hustwaite played as a big back. Players not really mentioned that I liked outside the obvious -

Vic Metro - Penny, Pascu, McDonald, O’Keefe.
Vic Country - Gallagher, Emile-Brennan, Clohesy, Vickery.

Reid is special. Harvey will be very good.

l believe most of us have a different view to yourself, maybe you need to provide examples of how we can obtain picks inside 30 this year and giving away future picks in a strong draft does not seem a smart decision at all.

All very well to suggest this, but we need to give up something of value to achieve more picks.
I would trade a future first which will be about pick 12-14 next year for a pick in the early 20s and one in the late 20s based on the premise we have specific players in mind and the draft is even.

Also I would trade one of marchbank, mcgovern or kemp if the deal was right for a pick between 25 and 35.

Only side that has picks in that range is WC and we would want more for giving up a future 1st

Must think we are having a down year? 😝

OK. Just finished watching the latest game. While a few “question marks” promoted their prospects later in the draft, I have no reason to change my thinking for our first pick.

Hollands for mine for his run, work rate, skills and connection. Again the viable alternative is Jefferson, should we go tall, and we definitely need a developing tall forward. Very rounded, although skinny young key. Has the necessary traits along with a willingness to work hard up the ground. Will be slow burn physically, but if Harry and Charlie stay fit, that is no issue with that as we don’t need our next generation yet. TDK, JSOS and Kemp can provide adequate back up in the near future. We do need a decent tall forward in the twos though, maybe two. Can’t see Busslinger sliding that far, while excellent at aspects, I have a couple of reservations on Hayes (exposed when forced to play one on one late v Reid after being given licence to play as a virtual unaccountable interceptor). I also don’t think a young KPD is as big a priority as the other end. Weiters and Young a quality combo. Marchy, Gov, Kemp and a couple of others third talls and we have Sam Durdin in the wings.

The second round will be dictated by sliders and whether we go tall or runner at our first. I am a little obsessed with grabbing SA key forward and very capable ruck pinch hitter Phoenix Foster with a later pick.

Ive seen Hollands rated as late teens and Arrow believes he’s a bit of a reach at 10, would we gain anything substantial by trading down 2-3 spots to grab Hollands?

Its a concern we don’t have anything of KPF style in the 2s but is it wise to draft a type that couldn’t do exist with what we currently have? Could Jefferson play alongside Harry and Charlie?

My perspective is positive and proactive Go hard, Go aggressive and Go early at the draft. Most of the rest, and I assume yourself, take the passive, soft, standard 3 draft pick approach- which is closer to a negative view on club management.

Ok you want more picks, give the how?

Currently Setterfield doesn’t have a contract, my thought is he will be traded, possibly with our 4th rounder, I would also be open to trading a future 2nd for one of GC high seconds, I don’t see it as a big issue and we could always get a 3rd round pick back next year to soften the blow.

Agree he was strong through tackles and at the contest today, surprised me a lot up against some of the bigger bodies in there. Probably won't find it as easy in the AFL but I think he'd be a round 1 ready gut running winger and is a lovely kick when in space. I'm sure he'll put on some muscle over a few pre seasons but god would it be good if he had Elijah's broader shoulders.

Clark really the only chance out of that lot. Those types of talents are ones that clubs would kill for. Especially Cadman and Tsatas. Clark is more just a tough nut who gives it his all and oozes leadership. Could see him sliding back a couple of picks for more your speculative types such as Humphrey and Philippou depending on which clubs end up with the picks.
Have watched a bit of Hollands now. He’s a lovely footballer. Two massive strengths: two way running and hands below knees. Disposal and decision making also very good.

He’s built like an outside player but plays his best inside. He doesn’t really get pushed off the ball but am a little worried about his body shape.

Not quite sure about his acceleration off the mark.

Wouldn’t be upset to see him picked at 11 at all.
