The thing against Lemmey, is that historically, talls that have gone from high pick potential to sliding this far generally dont make it.

Brander, Sellar, Butcher (ducks head), Ballenden. Even going back to guys like Billy Morrison, Fergus Watts. Theres others. Jeka might be another.

I cant really think of one who slid down the rankings but was still even a servicable player let alone a star.

Having said that, i’d still love to get him
Marshall slid- was a top 5 prospect when GWS had a go at getting him into their academy. Darling (as has been mentioned).

What about junior forward sliders that ended up KPD?

I'm not good on draft history but I would have thought there would be a few of those.

Trengove was a Junior ruck/forward who slid (because of injury) and became a decent CHB.

But none of this addresses my original point. I cannot remember a Tall Forward sliding from being in the conversation as #1, to late second round in 12 months, where injury is not the reason. It took 2 x knee reconstructions and 24 months for Baldwin to have a slide to the rookie draft.

The point is that if Lemmey slides from #1 conversation to #33 on the basis of an ordinary year, we should pounce hard.

When was Marshall rated a top 5 pick and by whom??

He hardly played in 2015 because he toured England with an Australian combined high schools cricket team. He did some Sunday morning training in Wagga with GWS Academy in 2014 and 2015 and then mid season 2016 he was ruled ineligible for GWS Academy selection.

Sure in 2016 he played well for the Bushrangers and Allies, and even played a few NEAFL games for GWS before he was ruled ineligible, but he was never rated top 5. Sure he was rated as the best KPF, but that moving top 5 rating was always full of mid fielders.

If you werent a mod id report you for blaming Butcher

Only potential high pick that springs to mind who slid is Lever, but that was because he did his ACL and didnt play a game in his draft year
Trengove! Pure 12

The most obvious one is this years pre season supplemental selection Paddy McCartin. From #1 pick as a KPF to retiring with concussion issues and returning as a bloody important KPD for the Swans this year - well until the GF was played.

The following is taken from Matt Balmer’s Power Rankings of 4 July 2016. I can’t link the article (due to being too old and incompetent) but you can find it on Rookie Me Central:

#6 Todd Marshall
Key Position Forward (Murray Bushrangers/NSW-ACT)
08/10/1998 | 198cm | 87kg
Previous ranking: 9
There is plenty to like about Todd Marshall and I think he will be one of the few key position players in the top 10. The NSW/ACT forward is in the open draft after earlier being tied to the GWS Academy. Marshall took some eye catching marks throughout the carnival with his best match coming against Western Australia where Marshall had four contested marks and two goals. Marshall finished with seven goals in both the division one and two carnivals. With a few clubs crying out for a tall target inside 50, Marshall is one clubs will keep an eye on. Marshall does need to work on his set shot goal kicking, where he takes a late side step before his kicks with can cause him to hook the ball in front of goal.

Sorry- Top 6 prospect, not top 5- shoot me.

I'd put my money on him being the only one who rated him that high. 4 July 2016 looks like a rating after U/18 championships.

Several people said he was the best KPF in the draft, after the U/18 nationals right up to the draft, but I never saw him rated top 10, by Twomey, Beveridge, Knightmare and others on Big Footy's draft board who watch a lot of juniors.

Was this Knightmare's personal opinion. Or was he making some abstract comment about what others see. At the bottom of the article he says;

Analysis
Despite his efforts this season, recruiters would be asking one another "when is Marshall going to kick 6-plus goals? Or take 10-plus marks in a game?" His goalkicking numbers have been consistent and he's also displayed flashes of brilliance here and there during games. The next stage in his progression is having a breakout performance that leaves recruiters feeling more confident that Marshall will be a No. 1 key forward at AFL level.

Marshall will be looking to add further size and strength to enable him to become a stronger one-on-one mark while still maintaining his athleticism. He will also be looking to improve his endurance and over time develop the ability to push further up the field to become effective up the field as well as inside the forward 50m.

Basically he hadn't shown recruiters he was a rolled gold top 5 pick or top 10 pick, because he hasn't gone out and dominated a game or two or three by August 2016. He looked good, but didn't have many runs on the board.

Below is the first time I saw Knightmare's 2016 rankings, its dated 9th October 2016 and he ranks Todd 15th. At the time I thought we need a bloody KPF so we have to have a crack at getting him, and I started watching Todd's videos.

15. Todd Marshall (NSW/ACT)
Best position:
Key forward
Height, weight: 198cm, 87kg
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Plays like: Tyrone Vickery
Projected draft range: first to second round
Rated last month: 5 Rationale behind ranking/change of ranking: Below expectation finals series and a lack of big games from Marshall sees him drop.

So My Bad, Knightmare did in fact rate him Top 5 and I forgot because I remember his 15th in October and I also remember that he didn't even rank him in his top 30 in November as per his article here -

So did Marshall fall or did fanboi Knightmare over rate him?? We know Knightmare changes his rankings as it gets closer to the draft as he hears whispers and probably talks to recruiting people and tries to link in his rankings to what the draft will look like.

In 8 weeks he slid from 5 to 15 and 6 weeks later outside the top 30.

That's not about Todd, that's about Knightmare and others shooting their load too early.

To be a Top 5 pick you have to be a rolled gold star at underage level with several years of consistent dominate performances and even play at state league level. Marshall never did that. He had a good early part of the season, had a good but not great national championships, but had come from nowhere with no real history at u/16 and u/17 level. Recruiters don't speculate on Top 5 picks with so little a sample size over 2 or 3 seasons.

The good clubs have shown if you get a couple of top 5 picks in a draft, or two to four over two or three drafts you can set yourself up for 10-15 years. GWS and Gold Coast have just pissed up all their high end talent against the wall. Melbourne also did their share of pissing.

Hawks in 2004 #2 Roughhead, 5 Franklin, 7 Lewis and 2005 #3 Ellis
Richmond in 2007 #2 Cotchin and in 2009 #3 Martin
Melbourne in 2014 #2 Petracca, #3 Brayshaw and 2015 #4 Oliver

That's the real reason why Knightmare and others adjusted their rankings. Reality caught up with their fanboisms. Marshall was never a top 5 rolled gold player.

Marshall plays like Vickery 🤨 I don't see it.
Well he went pick 8, 8 years earlier, so that's probably why Knightmare ranked him so high.

Which all proves my original point that Marshall was a slider.
