Scouting Notes: 2022 WAFL Colts - Finals Week 1

Peel Thunder and South Fremantle advanced in week one of the WAFL Colts finals series. We noted some of the top performers from either win.

I would've thought one area where we do excel is in trading/recruitment?

We get who we want.

But unlike some clubs with actual list success in the last decade we don't knee cap them on the way out.

Ok, settling in to listen to the Draft. My remaining draft board, which factors in what Port needs, is:

I think we will end up with Phillips 36 & Marshall with 53. Think Collingwood will get Hayes, Saints will get Keeler. And Van Es & Lemmey will get picked up between our first & second pick.

In the unforeseen event that Rucci gets something correct and we end up with Phillips at #36, I could live with that. Seems a bit of a stretch to me but:

• he’s 23- he’s not old
• got no footy in 2020, showed some really good signs in 2021 (8 games) then had a great year this year- a classic late Covid/bloomer
• if he makes it, he fills our greatest need

I’d still rather Keeler, Lemmey or Munkara who I think have higher ceilings.

Or he could be right about it being a defensive player, but wrong end of the ground.

It is a small defensive pressure forward. Say McEntee like?

Would love Munkara, but if we don’t pick Phillips or Van Es with 36, don’t think either will be there at 53. And that will just leave us with lanky project key defenders.

I like Barnett and Olli Hotton most of the players left. I can't see them getting through.

I still want Noah Long, I quite like Lovelock.

Im hoping for Van Es...he has the components to be a good tall defender...if he gets rid of the brain fades!

Phillips is the type of player we should have been drafting with rookie picks and / or mid season draft picks, not second rounders.

But here we are, we haven’t, and we might, and considering needs I could live with it, I just hope we don’t go short term needs over getting the best key defender.

I never said he was.

I said I hope we aren’t choosing short term needs over getting the best key defender.

Ie due to our key defender stocks we go a player who may not be the best prospect but the best most ready prospect.

Gruzewski is the guy who helped Hayes when he collapsed in the time trial. So he is slower than him...can take a speccy.
