Apparently Samoa is a real chance to win the Rugby League world cup.
I see a future where Samoa, Tonga and Fiji will dominate international rugby league.
Dream on

V’landys has always been very AFL conscious.

And that always has to be taken into account.
If he can’t do this, the AFL will continue to slowly and quietly (sort of) creep into its heartland with great strategic plays like the GABBA redevelopment, kids participation and greater reach.

The AFL will continue to consolidate if the AFL continues do what it has been doing.
The NRL is master of it's own ship but a sunken NRL ship could arguably make it easier for the AFL.
Nobody mentions that a troubled NRL should make it easier for rugby or soccer or basketball etc - only AFL - why is that ?

The AFL have done well and yes Vlandy's got embarrassed on the tv deal, however one thing I do like is how much profit the NRL has been bringing in the past few years compared to the AFL, with the extensive cost cutting he did.

The AFL have over double the cost base which seems way too much. I'd like to see them trim the fat at AFL hq and bank extra profits, to really put a gap between them and their competitors long term.

Whilst I don’t profess to know the intricate details of the costs of both leagues, the AFL has a proven successful track record of investing deeply into participation and game development, especially in developing markets. This is a noted weakness of the NRL which V’landys has previously noted and hinted at addressing. The AFL is profitable and it’s latest broadcast deal locks in the games continued growth through a proven successful strategy of investing in the games growth at the grassroots.

The NRL is very profitable but must increase its investment in the games growth now we’re through covid. The next broadcast deal the NRL secured will be so pivotal in this regard.

Very interesting to see those figures side by side. Thank you.

The AFL has a much higher cost structure (from the number of players alone) and invest huge amounts back into the game, which they should as a non-for-profit.
It's probably true that HQ remains bloated, and probably has been for a very long time.
Also, the NRL doesn't really have to invest heavily in player development. They have another football code doing half the work for them, and a virtual inexhaustable supply of Pacific Islanders who can step onto an NRL list. Pacific Islanders would make up about 0.5% of the Australian population, but make up about 45% of NRL playing rosters, which is quite extraordinary.

All true, wiih HQ being an industry all in itself. like all bureaucracies it could be rationalised and de-centralised.

I read that article today, it’s fascinating and raises so many interesting points.

V’landys has always been very AFL conscious. He has always appeared to be that type of rugby, anti Victorian figure with a chip on his shoulder. He’s done a good job at the NRL: Led it well through and out of covid, saved the game from bankruptcy, been instrumental in reforming rules to open up the game (but like AFL).

However, he’s certainly not delivered the optimal commercial result from its broadcasters, it’s largest revenue source. He arguably locked in its current rights deals at a time when he thought security was paramount, when in fact if he held out he’d have achieved more $$’s. His test will be the next deal..

The Clubs are financially stronger, more member focussed and have improved their financial results on lower cost based (like the AFL Clubs out of covid). The article notes new franchise The Dolphins will have assets of $100M, presumedly relating to a Leagues Club operation somewhere.

The next 5 years critical. He needs to achieve a much improved broadcast deal to unlock necessary investment in Stadiums, game participation and community programs to get kids in the sport. If he can’t do this, the AFL will continue to slowly and quietly (sort of) creep into its heartland with great strategic plays like the GABBA redevelopment, kids participation and greater reach.
V'Landys is your typical low class bogan blow hard the Sydney media love (News Corp and Foxtel) esp if V'Landys is having shots at the hated Victoria!
He is always bringing up and commenting on the AFL tying to deflect his own poor performance running RL it just shows how insecure he really is!
I have got NEWS for the loud mouth BS artist - the Nrl will never got on top of the AFL they just don't have the money (money talks BSers walk) and the National reach or the experienced and talented outward looking management the AFL has!

All they do is copy anything the AFL makes successful as they have NO new ideas themselves!

And the AFL own their own Billion Dollar Stadium not a few poxy hotels!

Got a link to Islanders 45% of NRL playing rosters?

According to Foxtel, Sunday’s 27-lap thriller at Phillip Island generated a total of 185,000 viewers across its linear (traditional pay television) and streaming platforms (Foxtel Now, Foxtel Go, Kayo Sports).

Its streaming figures are also said to be up by 151 percent relative to the corresponding event of 2019, the last time the grand prix circus descended on The Island.

This year is the first in which Fox Sports/Foxtel has exclusivity for all but the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, of which qualifying and the race for each of the three classes was simulcast on Network 10.

According to the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, which promotes the event, the three-day crowd was 91,158.

It was the number that surprised me. Is it the NRL itself or does it include the lower grades &/or

"make up about 45% of NRL playing rosters" - self explanatory.
The lower grades have increasing islander concentrations and juniors want a weight-based competition such is the problem in juniors.

There are no NRL rosters in union!......as yet......maybe in the future

The whole Hancock/Diamonds drama will be an interesting watch.

Good for netballers for standing by a principle, even if I think it is a stupid and confusing principle to stand on. But I hope they are willing to take a pay cut if its actions cost Netball a lot of very needed money.
