Ok on caroll.

Re owies..

i really like the way he goes about it... always applying pressure and intensity. throws his body around not scared of contact and was getting amonsgt the goasl but has dried a bit lately. I fear he may be replaced by another player and maybe that will be honey. whoever it is i hope they bring at least the same level of pressure as owies does. If only owies was a bit quicker and had a bit more penetration in his kicks.

reckon our mids have become a bit too mesmerized by the Charlie-Harry combo and ignore the other 4 forwards!

our mids or our coaches?

could be both i guess and its undertsandable because they are bloody good when theyre on.

the real question is why has the performance of our smalls dropped off?

Our forwards havent really continued marking like they did early in the season so opportunities for smalls to do their work when ball hits the deck should be there but it hasnt really tanslated that way.

theres been some opinions on here but none of it has me in complete agreeance. whatever the problem is it needs to be fixed. hopefully our smalls can play more like they did in r1 in particular.

voss's messages always about pressure, hunting the ball, work rate etc etc. i hope he can get our players to play in this way sometime soon. when I think about the way the tigers apply pressure im very envious.

Its great to hear that voss sees this in Caroll and hence he is getting an opportunity to debut.

Over the last few weeks I think Martin's intensity has lifted considerably.

Jsos durdin and owies apply good pressure also but we need more from guys like fish, lob setters H (sometimes) charlie.

we need to lock that ball in our f50 when it gets in there and create more scoring opportunites.

eidt: also relieves pressure on our defense group when the oppo rebound out too easily.
Yeah, I loved seeing Voss’s eyes light up when he spoke of Carroll. He really rates him.

Sorry to see Hewett out (he has been a star), but sooo excited to see Carroll. And with Stocker, probably the most enthused I’ve been this season (and let me tell you, I’ve been enthused).

Blind Freddy could see? You might need to do some research into what blindness is..
Also who is Freddy, we don’t all have the same friends you know.

EVERYBODY knows blind Freddy.
He doesn't see much. Only the obvious stuff.

Newnes is just a safe option and Voss needs to explore playing the likes of Walsh and Cerra more through the wings

But Newnes did have 10, score involvements the previous week, is one of our quickest players and his endurance would be top 6-8 at the club

If Carroll is selected, it won't be to take a flankers role. He is a mid that can rest forward, not the other way round

All true, but my comment was based on only pure numbers, to a poster that suggested Newnes wasn't quick, nor had suitable endurance.

Hello there

My point about Newnes is sound: he doesn't hit elite speed often enough, hence the statement 'the right speed/endurance mix'. Also, who wants an attacking wing that can't actually make many elite F50 entries to thread basic zones? He has all the attributes to be an elite kick, and to be a clearance player, but he's shocking at both.

10 years ago he would have caused problems through his endurance base, but these days he's highly exploitable. It can be a data-driven game at times, and the game knowledge that's arisen out of that has completely contained the easy opportunities he used to thrive on.

Back over to Carroll...

Playing a combination of midfield and up forward, Power said it was important Carroll continued to add strings to his bow — particularly on the back of his pressure, which was a sign of growth on the weekend against Werribee.

“Tim Clarke and myself see this as a big point of difference for Jack: he has the ability to close space really quickly with his speed,” Power said.

“He forces the opposition into errors because they don’t have much time with the ball.”
Weird how that reads exactly like Fisher. The coach review video goes on to highlight his pressure in the forward half.

If Setterfield gets fitness and form back, I think he's pressuring Fisher's spot, because he needs a pretty substantial mid/fwd split.
The problem with pushing Walsh to a wing is that we become an even worse running side through the midfield and that’s probably a higher priority.
We have a wing tuck in after the bounce, leaving Fisher to come more into the midfield mix. Given Walsh is horrible at the centre bounce, what's the problem?

What's going on with Kemp?
I'd go with Kemp as sub...
He's kind of the perfect sub, can play in all thirds of the ground...
Still building form in the VFL after looking likely in the pre-season. Still yet to be used in the midfield.

While I'm annoyed about the process in which this happened, it is exciting for Carroll. I'm looking forward to see him play.

Just wish we'd named him yesterday when we were supposed to.
They were checking Hewett pulled up ok the following day from training, makes sense.
Dow & Kemp now emergencies with Setterfield out with "illness"
That explains why he's missing from the VFL list.
A 4th emergency hasn't been named to replace Carroll.
Guess they're investigating if they need to exclude anyone else under covid protocol?

Ahh Dylan Shiel…..

The gift that keeps on giving.

Dropped.

I remember both clubs were fighting over Shiel and Setterfield that trade period...

Setterfield has been a disappointment, but at least we aren't paying him $1 million+ on a long contract.

Which means we will go with the specialist back pocket ...

Id put Cotts as sub.

I think we desperately need a 3rd tall in our backline. Can get away with it against small forward lines the next few weeks but after that its a real worry.

Whilst I agree Kemp would be the better sub Id take the risk not using him there if the trade off is a couple weeks in the vfl practicing that role.
