All the good players want to go to the top teams these days so we’re going to have to draft our way out of this rebuild so I’d be staggered if we didn’t enquire about pick 7. Surely it’s more likely we were told Bowes wasn’t interested than being stupid enough to knock it back.

Maybe its like a young guy trying to look cool after rejection.

Jack Bowes will depart Gold Coast in this year’s trade period as his salary reaches a bursting point.

Bowes is owed around $850,000 next year after having his salary pushed back multiple times in recent seasons.




Bowes is contracted until 2024, but will be among the departures at the Suns as part of a pay re-structure aimed at retaining its young core and making room for a star rival.

Geelong is very interested and the favourite to land Bowes, but Gold Coast has a queue for the former No.10 draft pick.

The Cats have been in discussions with the Suns over a trade for the 24-year-old, which could see the premier end up with pick 7 in the deal.

Geelong wants to improve its draft hand – its first three selections are currently 18, 36 and 46 – and Gold Coast wants to ease its salary cap squeeze and will do it by attaching draft picks.

While the specifics of any trade will be thrashed out this week, Bowes would either have to forfeit money or the Cats offer him a longer-term deal to spread out what he is owed.

But either way, the Suns would get his lucrative contract off the books.

The Cats see significant upside in Bowes, who has played 83 games in six seasons on the Gold Coast, primarily as a defender, but only five this year following significant pre-season shoulder surgery.

Geelong is also set to secure Tanner Bruhn from GWS and could bring in Ollie Henry from Collingwood, meaning Chris Scott’s side could welcome three first-round draft picks within the last six years after being priced out in the hunt for Brodie Grundy and Jacob Hopper.

The Cats will lose Shaun Higgins and most likely Luke Dahlhaus to retirement, while captain Joel Selwood could also step away after a fairytale fourth flag.

Geelong’s ruthless power on the field could yet be matched by a ruthless genius at the trade table.

They get the high-end talent they didn’t previously have access to, while gaining a pointy first-round pick.

Bowes is the bonus that would lessen the loss of Long/Clark/Hill off of HB. The prize is pick 7. Pick 7 and 9 give you two shots at getting a top end midfielder or the chance to move up high enough to get one if you think you need to. That is the race we are jumping out of early. Which is increadibly silly.

Pick up a decent player AND get the coveted double top 10 pick. **** me dead. We could replicate the success of last year’s draft bringing in multiple good prospects at once but be even more assured by the outcome. It would be so exciting to bring two first rounders to the draft

It’s been easy to compare us to Geelong since the 2009 grand final. Achingly frustrating that they’ve only missed finals once since then and have won multiple more flags. And now, just to really drive the nail into the coffin, they look likely to land a former top 10 pick and a current top 10 pick, coming off a flag whilst we cry out for the quality youth we need.

It’s easy to doomsay and bemoan our situation, but as I’ll keep saying, I’ll judge the club come end of trade period, and even then, there’s no saying what will work and what won’t.

Fair to say though that it’ll be a red flag if we don’t look set to bolster our youth either through trades or the draft. Idealistically we can revitalise our youth and maintain a level of competitiveness, should be what we’re aiming for, weren’t far off finals from a list perspective this year, IMO.

I may be the outlier here, but given the Trade Period hasn't even started yet, and in fact is another 6 days away, and that therefore no trades can actually get done...

...then I'm happy the Saints have not come out and said anything, and that the media, past players and the ITKs have no bloody idea what is happening. I'm happy they haven't called a press conference to explain the Bowe's situation and to address the Roo "meltdown". They would of course have a strategy and they just need to focus on that and ignore the noise.

Sure I'm frustrated because it is in our nature to want to know and we all want to hear news that will lift our spirits and give us hope. But I'm happy it's being kept inhouse.

At the close of trading we can all make our assessments and give it a Premium or a Gringo.

And we can then expect to hear something from the club (and be rightfully annoyed if we're kept in the dark over inexplicable decisions and/or if media criticisms are not addressed)

I think one of the key things we need to know with the Bowes situation is what is the trade deal.

So if he costs 850k a year for two years, what are you getting back, especially if you don't rate him as a player?

Is it pick 7 alone? Or is it a pick swap?

I just don't see how we can begrudge walking away from the deal without knowing what the deal is. If someone can explain that to me or explain what the deal is I'd love to hear it.

I doubt he isn't choosing us because he doesn't think he's going to get a game.

That's part of the frustration, the plan doesn't seem to be very obvious. Are we rebuilding? Are we challenging? Refreshing but then why DeGoey? None of it looks very linear at the moment. I'd be more confident if the club said that we are looking to do a quick refresh through the draft and did it in a disciplined sensible way with all players on board with it.

It feels like they prefer to keep quiet about plans or direction to keep membership up but then come across as a bit dishonest or incompetent. If we spend the next few seasons taking our draft picks they usually take around 5 years to hit their peak and that's if you pump games into them.

DeGoey will be 31 by the time the guys taken this year will be peaking and he'll be one of the senior leaders at the club.

I'm not sure he's the guy I'd bring in to lead a group of youth. Although maybe they just want a bit of razzle-dazzle for the fans while we rebuild?

I think we're filling needs, trying to bring in youth for the future, and trying to bring our draft pick stocks back into the black.

Last year we were pretty flat with our trading strategy, or lack of trading but set ourselves up to collect both of our highly touted NGA players, as well as NWM (who most on here would be pleasantly surprised with) and a KD prospect in Owens. Peris & Kyle were both Cat B rookies. Then we got Hayes & Lienert through as supplmentary signings. With Owens & Windhager coming on quickly, and our 2022 draft picks largely preserved, I think we did well.

They year before we refused to sell the farm to Adelaide for Crouch who is a key part of our best 22. We also brought in Jack Higgins & Pick 21 for pick 17 (plus loose change).

I think our last couple of years we have been measured and calculating in terms of a trade / draft balance and I don't expect this year to be any different.

The Bowes & 7 is a no-brainer. If we're not chasing it there will be a reason for that.

Wish you had of told me in 2019 that Jack Bowes and pick 7 would be available as a salary dump in 2022.

Considering we never had pick 7, I am going all in and saying we actually gave up pick 1 for DeGoey. Wow what incompetence.
