Liam Stocker to train with St Kilda via Jay Clark on Twitter. Quite like this.

We have 6 list spots open.

As you said, it's worth a shot. Stocker has enough talent to be taken in the first round. Maybe he just needs a different environment to fulfil that talent. It's one of those scenarios where there is no downside if he never makes it on the list and only upside if he can contribute something.
And there is also that some kids are just more mature and advanced at at a younger age and don't improve similar to a lot of 2 yo horses that are no good at 3 years of age as the others have caught up and gone past them

If it doesn't work out, then who cares. We haven't lost anything by giving him a chance to train with us.

We shouldn't stop giving the pre season train ons a chance just because there is a possibility that don't work out.

Again, I think this kid has a heap of potential.

Arguably three of our best players at present were late bloomers in Sinclair, Marshall and Wilkie.

We certainly need to draft the best kids available. But we also need to look through the passed over and rejected bins as well.

For example Wood seemed to have finally found his feet last season, and I think he will relish playing under Lyon.

What I do not want to see us do is bring in any more Frawleys, or McKernans, who were just on their last legs with no upside possible.

Don't we have something like 9 open spots? I think sometimes picking up an older developed project player has as much if not more upside than some of the questionable types taken late in the draft. Guys taken after about 40 in the draft must have about a 5% chance of making it. If Ethan Phillips or someone is still there late you take them but if all the players that you liked are off the table, you pick up one or two train-on players or keep spots open for the preseason or midseason drafts.

and wouldn't it be preseason draft that we would pick him up. he would hten have trained with the group for 3 months, by then he might be useful

He isn’t a late bloomer. He was really highly touted in the same draft we took king.

Richmond had a hard on and Carlton traded a future first to grab him 1/2 picks before them.

He was a genuine mid they have turned into a lockdown defender - usually on the match winner mid sized forwards like Heeney/Petracca etc.

Had a few mental health issues. There is a knock on his tank etc.

But 10000% definitely a good footballer there.

Dunstan vs Ross for example.

My bet SOS had put in a good word to Ross. SOS clearly loves stocker.

I like the move. Give him a year as a mid and see how he goes.

100% this

Liam is hard as a cats heat and always left everything out there.

Was one of our more physical players - which I think we'll miss.

Ultimately though, given his public mental health and anxiety battles ... I don't think he was helped by his high profile pick swap trade in the media.

Not fit enough for a full time midfield role, wasn't quick enough for a lock down defender role and due to his fitness base - his fatigue definitely affected his kicking skills (which were much lauded pre-draft).

I think a new scenery would do him a world of good though.

he was a midfielder and as there were no spots in the team in the midfield Carlton played him as a defender
His draft profile mentioned he was handy up forward too. Seems like Carlton didn't give him a crack in a position he suited.

Not a bad player, but he looks like he is carrying unnecessary bulk. You get the feeling his mobility would benefit by trimming down 5kgs. Just as a side observation the way he plays reminds me of Nathan Freeman, hopefully he has more luck?

Anyway good luck to the kid hopefully he can make the most of his second chance.

Quite right, and there is no shortage of players who do turn it around when given a second/late chance.

Jarryd Lyons, Tim Kelly, Will Brodie, Tyson Stengle, indeed you could add Mason Wood to that list and hopefully Jack Hayes.

And if you had to pick between the many traits that need work, endurance is one that is most in the player's control to fix. Ultimately it's a free hit.

It also means that they can have a good look at him.
Wow he won the centre clearance over Brad Crouch. or
Oh man....he lost the centre clearance against Brad Hill.

Didn’t he win their best 1st year player award too?

So obviously showed a bit but has stalled for whatever reason.

A few Blues mates are absolutely spewing he was delisted… they reckon he’s a ripper but Voss put him on the shit list & that was that.

My Carlton mates say that he has a fair bit of the FIGJAM about him as well. Nathan Buckley levels they reckon, without the runs on the board, and doesn't exactly endear himself to his teammates.

Take that with a grain of salt though, cause seems like they went from 'Great player, matter of time' to 'Overrated & lazy' in a heart beat.
