Have we ever had a bad recruit from Tassie?

Neitz is an all-timer.

Howe was handy recruit, notwithstanding he played his best for Collingwood.

Garland was one of our best players during the dark age.

BBB is a premiership winning full forward and will be our spearhead for the 2023 flag!

Can’t go wrong with Tassie picks!

Do people here seriously follow the junior leagues? I form all draft opinions from highlight videos and mock drafts about 2 weeks before draft day.

Neitz is from Tassie? I don't think so

Born there and moved to Vic early. Much like Garry Lyon.

I didnt realise that. There you go. Wonder why both played for Victoria then in SOO. Turncoat scum.

I'm pretty sure delisted free agents are just the delisted players from that year. Jordon was delisted and re-rookied, which means he now qualifies as a 'free agent for life', but that means he's an unrestricted free agent rather than a delisted one.
That's my understanding too. As Jordon was delisted he is forever a free agent whenever his contract expires.

I checked the AFL rules about compensation and it indicated there is compensation for both restricted and unrestricted free agents.

I don't think it would matter much anyway. If Jordon leaves it will be for game time and not for some massive salary offer. He hasn't finished high up in Melbourne B&Fs. Those are some of the things that make up the free agency compensation formula.

Hunt got Melbourne a third rounder (52). Amon and McStay only got second rounders. You'd think Jordon would be offered a deal closer to what Hunt got than what Amon or McStay got too so I'd expect something like a third rounder.

That pick might help for points if Melbourne want Kynan Brown and another team selects him surprisingly early. That's about it.

I was born in Scotland but moved here aged 6. Consider myself a true Aussie - where you grow up is a much bigger part of 'who you are' than your birthplace imo.

Yeah that's like my old man, yeah he was born in Scotland, but he has an Aussie accent, likes Australian sport AFL and cricket pretty much is Aussie. Yes still has a connection to Scotland but really is Aussie as they come.

It's funny I work at a school in a very multicultural area. Kids sometimes as me where I'm from, I explain I'm Australian but my dad is born in Scotland and my mum is Aussie but somewhere down the line she would be Irish. I say that I have a soft sport for Ireland/Scotland but I wouldn't call myself Scottish because I've never been there. Quite often these kids are born in Australia but will say that they are from where their parents birth place. I get It's different for them compared to me, but I do find it interesting. To my memory I probably would have identified as half Scottish at the same age but it's become less relevant to me as I've gotten older. I wonder how they may feel in 10 years time.

I just read this article.

My red hot take is that JT has a massive hard-on for Watson. Based on past drafts, we know JT loves to burn an early pick on the runt of the litter. Look at Kozzy, DJ Shitboy, Bowza and Laurie.

At 170cm tall, Watson is the prototypical JT draft pick. I expect that we will be calling out his name if he is still on the board on draft night.

We need more players at the club that Jack Viney can see eye-to-eye with!

Not untrue, just remembering a time where kids were just over the moon to be drafted and living out their dream.
I've come around on this, it's soft and it's scummy and it'll probably bite us but how many kids work their asses off to become the number 1 pick and then get drafted to an absolute basket case that means they lose 80% of games for the first 6 years and then their talent is never fulfilled.

If you do what's best for you as a player you go to anyone but North and WC

Hence why I said "but more importantly lead our midfield in the future".

Realistically, the bulk of modern gun midfielders impact games in their first season. Look at the first year stats of some of the league's best midfielders:
  • Oliver: 13 games, 19.2 disposals, 4.8 tackles, 4.2 clearances
  • Petracca: 17 games, 17.4 disposals, 3.3 tackles, 0.7 goals
  • Mills: 22 games, 18.6 disposals, 4.8 marks, 2.3 tackles
  • Martin: 21 games, 20.2 disposals, 4.8 clearances, 0.5 goals
  • Laird: 18 games, 18.5 disposals, 4.1 marks, 2.8 tackles
  • Merrett: 20 games, 15.2 disposals, 4.0 tackles, 0.6 goals
  • Wines: 24 games, 18.8 dispoals, 3.9 tackles, 4.8 clearances
  • Butters: 19 games, 14.2 disposals, 2.7 marks, 2.5 tackles
  • Rozee: 22 games, 15.4 disposals, 1.3 goals, 3.5 marks
  • Brayshaw (Freo): 17 games, 15.9 disposals, 4.4 tackles, 2.9 marks
  • Serong: 14 games, 16.9 disposals, 4.1 tackles, 3.4 clearances
  • Bontempelli: 17 games, 15.9 disposals, 0.9 goals, 3.4 tackles
  • Macrae: 13 games, 17.9 disposals, 2.7 tackles, 2.7 marks
  • Walsh: 22 games, 25.1 disposals, 5.0 marks, 3.2 clearances
  • Daicos: 25 games, 25.8 disposals, 2.2 tackles, 4.1 marks
  • Ashcroft: 17 games*, 22.5 disposals, 3.6 tackles, 3.8 clearances
Obviously, you're not expecting a kid to come in and impact games like Ashcroft, Daicos and Walsh off the bat, but if you're spending a pick that high on a mid, you expect them to come in and play early. If they can't break into the team with regularity in year one, it's not a great sign regardless.

With someone like Duursma or McKercher, you'd want them to play a role on a flank rotating through the mids in year one (giving us a much-needed extra rotation in the middle), before eventually leading the midfield down the track.

We're in the window now, but also need to solidify our future. Getting a young mid that can help in both regards is ideal.

Agree with all you say, i think we also need more genuine midfield talent. Oliver missing a big chunk of games has exposed us a bit in the middle.

The one caveat however, is if there is a really talented big key forward available at our first pick then t will be a real risk to overlook him.

Turns out McClure completely backflipped anyway.

Bloke is such a bloody worm. Blaming other journalists for running with something he put on the record.

Agree, ny main issue is players signing a contract then wanting to break it 1 year in, I think it's fair game for any player to notify a club they don't want to go there pre draft if the club is a complete basketcase.

Bolded is pretty cool IMO.

I lived in a very not-multicultural area when I grew up, and identified as Australian because it's all I knew: my parents came here from SE Asia and tried to adopt Australian culture- food, sports etc. but as I get older, preserving and taking an interest in my heritage and family's culture is a bit more important.

I don't identify as Australian anymore, I don't even know what Australian culture is. Cricket sucks, not so into binge-drinking, things like "fair shake of the sauce bottle" and "mateship" are just empty platitudes to me.

Anyway, bit off-topic.

With 2 first and 2 second round picks do you think we might try trade up as Gold Coast pick could be up for grabs they needing point? Wonder how many picks we will use, who do you think will be delisted at season end? What do we need in list needs?

I've always admired Jack Silvagni as a player. Always gives his all and is handy as a third tall forward.

As an unrestricted free agent I'd be keen on him.

Still just 25 and might not cost the earth.
