Trading Oliver.

I think I can see both sides. There's an element there that we got our midfield mix really settled which made us unpredictable at times. When Oliver came back into the team I thought Sparrow and Vineys form dropped a bit purely because we simply had to fit Clayton in there somewhere.

Then there was the bombing inside 50 come finals especially against Colling where Oliver was one of the biggest culprits and has been for majority of his career. It's cost us games and finals.

Then there's the fact that he's only just turned 26 and he's now coming towards peak of his career where we'll see some enormous upside from here on and it keeps our midfield strength at bay.

I'm a big believer that you always have to look at ways to regenerate your list whilst also contending. Examples I can think of are GWS last year with Tarranto and Hopper and Geelong and Hawthorn with Gary Ablett Jnr and buddy Franklin when both Hawthorn and Geelong went on to win the flag the following year. So there is a positive effect to this.

If you were to trade him, your starting point is two top 10 picks imo. Imagine getting McKercher, Duursma/Sanders and O'Sullivan in one go....

An this is the point. I don't think this group wins another flag without change. Now maybe those 3 kids bust, but if they hit we are a hell of a lot closer to a flag

Why trade Oliver before Petracca? Oliver is better than Petracca anyway. Thats pretty clear. 4 bnf's to only 1. And Petracca is probably a worse kick than Oliver too.

Imagine judging Oliver on form after coming off a 10 week injury 😳

I'm gonna kick off Petracca from [PLAYERCARD]Ben King[/PLAYERCARD] then.

Unreal isn't it. Ablett, Buddy, Tim Kelly, Judd, Danger etc all left the club to either chase money or go home. How do you think it would go over with the playing group or supporter base if the Superstar on your team got 'forced' out! Culture would be shot to s*. Oliver is mates with most of our core group of stars. He's gonna break records for contested possessions and clearances etc. Dees haven't had the likes of Trac or Oliver on their list for 6 decades and people wanna trade him for picks!?

If Oliver wants out, then fine, go get the picks or players we need. Otherwise, he stays. Simple. We've already got $$ and draft capital good enough to do something decent. Maybe trade Salem? Langdon? Sparrow? Blokes who would bring in some interest and decent enough draft capital and who aren't integral to the sides chances instead of trading away a superstar.

Coz Trac proved he isn't one dimensional this year when he went forward and was able to kick goals. Unlike Oliver. Give me that flexibility and the ability to rotate more guys thru the midfield any day.

100% agree. It's one of the dumbest things I've read. The competition has become a superstar league. Clubs froth over having a superstar. That's why we offered 3 first rounders for Bailey Humphrey because we believe he will be a star.

You don't do the reverse and trade your stars. Let alone for players that aren't stars.lol. like what!

Ben King isn't a star of the game. He is a promising young player with a significant injury history and who has had big fluctuations in form

You could also make the argument that having Oliver back in would mean Trac could then spend more time forward.

Unless you think Viney, Gus, Sparrow, Woewodin and AMW is a premiership winning midfield?

I called this last year and got shot down when Brisbane brought in Dunkley, Gunston, Ashcroft, McKenna and Collingwood Hill, Mcstay, Mitchell.

Now we see an article from Ralph about our focus being on our priority being getting a 2nd rounder for Grundy.

Dead set if our priority is chasing a pick in the 30s over fixing our forwardline or having no classy mids then we will be lucky to make the 8 next year.

This is 2 years old, probably before our 2x straight set exits from inside 50 bombing.

If we don’t want to change things up we can expect more.

If we actually traded Oliver that wouldn't be our midfield.

Can the people who can't get passed the idea of trading Oliver follow the actual argument being made? Jesus Christ this is so tedious to have to re-explain this stuff to people who can't keep up with a simple point.

No one is suggesting this will actually happen. No one is suggesting we should trade him for nothing.

Put it this way, if Oliver asked for a trade tomorrow what would you accept for him? Would you continue to pursue a flag or would you just decide that we are so lost without Oliver that we might as well rebuild?

It's a pretty definitive statement on where our list manager sees Oliver in terms of importance.

Who exactly would our midfield be then, and how will their future pan out better than Oliver's 4 Blueys? I think perhaps in your rush to push this narrative you've missed the point that you'd be trading out a proven star, one of our best ever players, for a draft gamble or two. If you can't name exactly who replaces him and how their career will pan out definitively then you're taking risks that clearly our list manager would not consider for 1 second.

There's certainly a lot of posts by your and your mates for something that will never actually happen.

Oliver is signed until he's 33, you reckon he's close to requesting a trade?

Should we go through our entire list and the trade scenarios around them or is this just an Oliver thing that the logic applies to?

This was 2 years ago. We were saying Grundy was a required player just a few months ago and look where that’s gone.

Things change and if 2x straight set exits don’t trigger change then I am unsure what will.

Club said they love him and is a required player. You’re grasping at straws if you think that if the exact same quote wasn’t used as 2 years ago it has a completely different meaning.

You are to focussed on individual accolades and missing the big picture which is team premierships.

Doesn’t change anything if Oliver wins 10 bnF, brownlows and AAs if we don’t win flags for all I care.
