I’m not having a go at this thread…

But, isn’t it great that we are in the finals and not have to focus on this thread until after we’ve collected our premiership cup :D

Then all our excess players are all worth first round trades :p

I’d trade up to grab Zane Duursma. Trade our first round this year and next year to get it done. Could be a game changer for us and play we need. Write up below from afl.com
It's been a super month for Duursma that has really established his chances of being a top-three pick at the end of the year. After finishing the carnival with Vic Country by booting four goals against Vic Metro, the medium forward/midfielder played another game with the Casey Demons and also turned it on for Gippsland, booting six goals against Bendigo, and the previous week kicking two goals from 24 disposals and 12 marks. Duursma can make the difficult look effortless, he has outstanding skills, he is a penetrating kick, he floats for marks and changes games. He's fun to watch.

Or could we split our first pick and slide back and grab an Ashton Moir and key defender ?

It hasn't been the season Moir would have hoped for after he booted 30 goals from 10 games last year as a forward with Glenelg's under-18 team. But the talented dual-sided player is still a prospect of interest for clubs and can do the mercurial around goal, kicking on either foot and with a spring in his step to take marks. Kicked two goals against Vic Country in his best game for South Australia during the carnival.

Or a potetntial cult hero?
18. Carlton
Koltyn Tholstrup

Subiaco/Western Australia
FWD/MID, 188cm, 80kg
National Champs: 3 games, 18.7 disposals, 6.7 score involvements, 88 ranking points

The Blues have targeted needs in past drafts with Ollie Hollands and Jesse Motlop, and are in a position to take upside swings at the best available this year. Tholstrup could be a home run selection with his physicality, power and aggression all hallmarks of his forward-half play. He's a type that the Blues don't have much of - an enforcer in the mould of a Sam Powell-Pepper or Cam Zurhaar with cult hero traits.

I'd trade down slightly to get a higher second pick. I don't see the appeal of dropping out of the first round next year. We don't know who would be available, nor what our needs will be.

I don’t think we’ll be using a second pick this year, if that ends up being the case then I’m all for trading up to get a hff/midfield jet or key back

I haven't been draft watching much this year but I think our biggest need (as highlighted by our selection issues this week) is someone else to play the Jack Martin role. Having had a brief look at his profile I think Moir is a perfect fit from a theoretical standpoint. He's a good height, is good in the air, knows where the goals are and can kick it 50+ off both feet. The thing is that this position and blend of attributes is generally only available at the very top end of the draft (like Martin himself).

Moir was rated as a potential top 5 pick before this year so the talent is obvious. If we are planning on spending the next couple years at the top of the ladder this might be a rare chance to grab someone with this profile so I think its worth taking a punt on him even if his year was way off standard.

We can probably trade down though, there'd be no need to use a pick in the teens on him.

George stevens afl academy captain strong leadership qualities just came back from an acl injury and has had a huge second half of the season. Probably someone we won’t pick cause we have heaps of inside mids. But could develop him to become Cripps heir and looks like he’d love playing under voss game plan. Strong big body that loves the contest

Geez, he looks like he stole all of Kade Simpson's allotted hours in the gym...

I like Stevens, but don’t see a need for us. Thinking he is under rated by many. Smart footballer, likely to be very much a Cripps type. Inside mid is not really a need for a couple of years.

Draft also has plenty of excellent HBF options who I really like, just no need for them.

(IMO) got to roll the clock forward 2-3 years when drafting - it is also a chance that Fisher, Dow, Philp are not on the list next year - develop good players in VFL and have them ready to step up - that is what sustainable relevance is for a Club. Carlton is only now after 20 years of total fail in list building/balance/maintenance playing teh same game as other Clubs.

We currently have two talls in development and they are skinny runts who will need another couple of pre-seasons, add Akuie who has some athletic ability but we dont know wether he is a forward or back..but no developing KPD, and apart from Carroll who seems to have plateaued ther is no inside / outside mid - Binns is the one that is developing nicely - as a wingman...but does he have the endurance and run of Cottrell or Hollands?

I think we might lack depth in developing midfield options ..the other area needing a good look at is some HFF class. Martin and Cuningham aren't the most reliable week in week out players.

Cripps 29, Hewett Back, Dow gone?
A list can thin out quickly

I keep watching more vision of Wilson, and continue to see a player that doesn't enthuse me at all. On the surface his stats and play look attractive, but to me, i'm watching a player that is not gonna thrive at AFL level.

We all get some right, and some wrong. But yeah, i wouldn't touch with a 2nd rounder, let alone the 1st rounder he's projected at.

Lance Collard on the other hand looks a gold chip prospect. He has everything to be an elite AFL small/medium forward. Electric, inate skill. Looks like he likes to show it off too, so should love the bright lights. I'd love to go into the draft with a pick to bid on him. WC have got him after Pick 40, but he'll go probably half that unless he interviews/tests real bad. Him and Mots underneath and around Charlie and Harry in 2026 would be scary.

So far, my take is:

Connor O'Sullivan - Make any moves we possibly can to get.
Lance Collard - Yes please.

Darcy Wilson - No thanks.

For what its worth I would also prefer to move up the order over taking Wilson if we can find a buyer for our F1. The top 10-12 prospects in this draft look a lot more bankable types than everyone else, and by a considerable margin imo. Wilson my pick of the next best lot in case we can't move up. Caddy, O'Sullivan or even a potential slider like Watson if he made it down the order.

The “late riser” Charlie Edwards has really caught my eye. Saw the highlights package, and just wow. Had read a little that he was staking a late claim, but not taken much notice.

That highlights package is exactly what many posters have been screaming as our need. Mid/forward, who actually started the season at half back after a late start due to cricket commitments. 190cm, quick, athletic, can take a grab, very smooth and effective on his left leg in the package, while showing quality distributing skills on his right. Loves a goal as well.

Is exactly the type we need based on very limited exposure. Has made it on to Twomey’s list today as well, so is getting some attention in the “right” circles.

I still think a KPD is our greatest draft need, but, but other than perhaps Ollie Murphy or undersized SA skipper and interceptor Will Patton (more a left footer with perhaps Marchbank size and game style) there is not a great deal around our first. I don’t mind the look of Zane Zakostelsky a bit later in proceedings. KPD first, has been rucking through WA colts finals to great effect. Pace and agility is a pre requisite of modern key defenders, and he has both. Not an absolute stand out through the “carnival”, but has the tools, and we have time to develop them.

Other than Edwards, we are probably around Sanchez, Tholstrup, DeMattia, Simpson territory. A couple of those probably won’t get to us either. We would be looking at around #17 at the moment (hopefully drops further in coming weeks)

Loving that the media has us more in to trading Hollands than Gresham at the moment. Half the cost financially, and spots in Suns ‘22 will be tough with the three gun draftees added to their current list. Contracted, and I am sure they would be happy to keep him, but Elijah would not currently COMMAND a top 22 spot in the mix though)

I'm also in the Charlie Edwards camp. Looks a very good big bodied mid with jets. Voss would be excited by this kid imo.

In not stressed about trying to get a top 10 player this year. Would now prefer 3 in the 20-30 bracket. Think there will be some gems in this range.

Just saw the highlights clip then and yep, I’m on board too. Get Cheddar!

The only position l can imagine Dary Wilson playing at afl level is wing. He needs lots of space to run. I just can’t help but think he will struggle with contested footy at afl level. I couldn’t use a first round pick on him.

Talking of Wilson’s , has anyone watched Billy Wilson’s highlights. I love the way he moves. I think what’s holding him back might be his kicking. Does anyone else have any thoughts about him?
