my explaination:

just feel lions to minor premiers i just feel it is their year in the h and a.
Still have cats there and tigers to make a return to top 4.
Collingwood and Carlton line ball but have pies in there due to finals experaince.
Then to Melbourne i feel its their time to slip a couple of spots even though they have that gawn grundy combo i just feel other teams are working out the dees. But ill say 5th or 6th for them.Still a good side.
Swans to mkae it again but i feel 2022 was like a missed opportunity and wont be as potent again be there abouts and like dees still a good side but may slip a tad.
Power and freo was a toss of the coin.
Feel power had a better trade period then freo so i put them just in there and its time for power to finally taste finals again.
Freo are ok but feel 2023 will be a reality check for them.
Hard to pick ones are gws dogs suns and crows that why ive grouped them in similar spots.
GWS i feel could be a smoky for 8th spot.
Pull a blanket over the likes of eagles hawks bombers and north.

Max King is nothing, is he? He ruined our forward line.
Steele and King are terrific and Membrey majorly underrated. I don’t see much A grade talent to work with looking through the rest of the list.

I feel this is the coming of age for Collingwood and like the transitional stage on when they finally take over kind of the bridge to the promised land.

It's been a few months, trade and draft has been done, some early season injuries are now known. I haven't changed much since October except Carlton without Walsh has me thinking they might not do as well as I first thought. I think the Swans will be scarred.

incredible people still have richmond top 4 and collingwood not even though 2022 Pies had a way better year.

I think both can make top 4 to be honest.

Teams to slip but still make it are Melbourne and Sydney.

Still think the cats are the benchmark team and the team to beat in 2023.

Time for things to start going right for Brisbane too they have been in finals for a long while now.

Toss a coin on spots 7 and 8 you can have up to 4 teams to fill the last 2 spots.

Carlton has to make finals or its bust for them for a few years.

Make or break for the Blues.

I think my ladder is on the money.

Just some minor tweaking maybe but its pretty spot on.

Even though if Collingwood have to play an elimation final still think they can at least make it to a preliminary final.

2022 finals experiance was gold for the Pies.

So let's see how I go

1. Melbourne

People forget the dominance of their mids and their solid backline. Will brute force scoring through repeated entries to Fritz and Kozi without needing Brown to be an afl level player.

2. Brisbane

Ran out of steam. Good trade and draft period. Not sure they can win enough at the mcg but will slam a few sides.

3. Richmond

Two quality midfield additions gets their structure back on track. Some defensive concerns and probably some learning curve with new faces. The body remembers but their brand will change.

4. Geelong

Reversion to mean with a more normal run of injuries. Risk to depth in kpd and ruck remain. Enough new talent and depth to cover most kinds of injuries and incorporate a few new looks

5. Collingwood

Probably a similar year. I don't expect much from Tom Mitchell and think he could actually work against what made them good last year

6. Fremantle

Lobb is a difficult one to cover but expect natural development from their list and a fit Fyfe will take them a long way.

7. Sydney

Natural progression of a good young list offsets a bit of a step back by the group after a GF mauling that historically teams don't rebound from.

8. Carlton

Too much talent to miss the 8. Same as last year.....

9. Western Bulldogs

Think there will be a bit of adjustment with new structures based on thinner midfield. Could start to come good by year end

10. Port

Bye Kenny. Hopefully your exit is as dignified as the dignity you have given port since taking them over.

11. Gold Coast

Could make the 8 in my opinion but probably one more year of development and they start stomping lesser sides.

12. Essendon

Bit of new coach bounce but not Collingwood 2022 level

13. St kilda

I want to believe in new coach bounce here but don't think they have the talent base just yet

14. GWS

Not sure where I stand. They actually might just turn into a cohesive unit with all the wantaways pushed out the door but maybe not

15. Adelaide

Bit of natural development

16. West Coast

Need to stop the spiral.

17. North

It'll be incremental improvement. Small increments

18. Hawthorn

Some developing talent forward and better talent developing back, but changing the midfield over is like changing the lead singer in a band. You could throw a blanket over this bottom 4 but the amount of midfield experience out the door is sounding an alarm.

Could be way off but I'll chuck it out there

If the Crows only win 5 games this season….. Then the whole Coaching Staff should get the Sack!

It should be extremely close competition in 2023. I got probably top 3-4 teams, then 10 team fighting for remaining finals spots (could be shuffled randomly) and then bottom 3-4. As usual injuries will play important role in final ladder.

I am biased Suns fan.

1. Lions. Great acquisitions. They got depth, got finals experience, should be hungry to make the final step. Need to improve team defence. Adams still not training is a worry.
2. Cats. Unbelievable regeneration of the list while competing every year. Will old players still be hungry?
3. Melbourne. They should come back strongly after disappointing last year. Still quality everywhere except some question marks about forward line. Play van Rooyen.
4. Tigers. Taranto, Hopper should improve midfield significantly. Can we see Martin back to his best?
5. Dogs. Time for them to step up. Too good list to make up numbers. Unless Beveridge will screw it up.
6. Carlton. Very good list on paper. Time to deliver. Can they play like a team? Walsh and Hewitt recovering from back surgeries is a bit of worry.
7. Suns. Time to play finals. How good can King, Powell and Weller be after coming back from serious injuries? Rowell and Anderson entering 4th season – time to step up to another level in the middle.
8. Swans. A step back after hammering in GF. Midfield not big/strong enough.

9. Freo. Still not impressed by their forward line.
10. Port. Jonas, Boak not getting younger. Not sold on JHF and Rioli making Port better next year. Time for a new coach.
11. Collingwood. Dream run is over. Old players getting older, opposition will learn from last year.
12. Saints. Crazy Lyon will make them play better, play hard, defend hard. Not a lot of top talent. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
13. Crows. Burgess has them in great shape, play hard, contested footy. Midfield still not good enough, average defence too.
14. Essendon. A lot of talent with potential. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
15. Giants. Best 22 still very good. Poor depth. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
16. North. The list is better than what they showed last year. Clarko will make them play better.
17. Eagles. Just too many old players past their time. Rebuild needs to speed up.
18. Hawks. Some good players and potential talent but poor depth. With some injuries it could turn ugly for the youngest team.
As a Crows fan…… Your assessment of Adelaide is SPOT ON !

Funny how everg year you get the mugs writing off Geelong. The cats will be even better this year. Midfield loses Selwood but have added midfield depth.
Already: Guthrie, Dangerfield, Atkins, Holmes, Parfitt, Blicavs, Isaac Smith, Duncan, Menegola
New: Bowes, Bruhn, Jye Clark
Forward line is the best in the business.
Backline with Stewart, De Koning and Zach Guthrie is solid. Ratugolea might be a handy addition.
X-factors in Olivers Henry and Dempsey
And a guy named Oisin Mullin from Ireland.
I admire how Geelong have managed to remain competitive for so long and they have this year done very well due to the absolute gift in the Gold Coast trade.

However, it is one of the oldest lists on record. The AFL grand final winning side had an average age of 28yr 206 days in September and will have 12 players over 30 and only 1 under 24 at the start of the season this year from that team.

I know what I am going to say is not exactly revolutionary given everyone thinks their team is going to go better than expected going into a new season but I am reasonably confident about the Swans in 2023. In reality 2022 was too early for us a team, no one expected Sydney to make the Grand Final and in reality the bulk of the team was too young.

In 2023 though we can expect improvements from a lot of players like Warner, Gulden, McInerney, Rowbottom, McDonald, both McCartin's etc and the only players who will likely decrease in performance are Buddy, Rampe and possibly Hickey. Overall the team should be better with our young players all getting another year under their belt and not having many players who are going to get worse due to age. I feel like we will be a better and more well rounded team in 2023.

Will be interesting to see how the Swans bounce back after being embarrassed on grand final day. WB, Giants, Crows all suffered in the following year(s). List looks in a great position on paper.

I think being a young team helps in that regard, as does no one really expecting us to make the Grand Final in 2022. If anything Sydney very much overdelivered last year.

1. Geelong: Status quo - until they fall off can't really have them anywhere else
2. Melbourne: Expect a big bounce back year from them
3. Brisbane Lions: Gunston + Dunkley + Ashcroft will be big for them
4. Richmond: Taranto + Hopper fix up their only real deficiency in 2022
5. Sydney: Love their team + coach but just think the teams above them have a bit more experience - hope they get another chance at a GF in 23'
6. Collingwood: Mitchell will help with their contested ball/clearances and don't expect them to slide much - but happy enough if they do
7. Carlton: Think Acres was a good get by us to fix up a deficiency on the wing - hoping for a bit more luck with injuries in 23' and more consistent pressure/effort across 4qtrs
8. Fremantle: Lost some players but Jackson is a good get and even JOM should help out two stars in Brayshaw and Serong.

9. Western Bulldogs: If L.Jones plays at a near enough level to how he was before the year off Dogs could easily finish top 6 - love their midfield, however Dunkley is a big out - just need to sure up their defence.
10. Port Adelaide: Wouldn't surprise me at all if they make the 8 but if they do it won't be because of the acquisitions of JHF and Rioli imo but the continual improvement of Butters and Rozee who are pure machines.
11. St Kilda: Lyon will make an impact but I am worried with King out about their scoring - need a big year from Membrey and will be a top 8 chance
12. Gold Coast: They should improve with King back but the loss of Rankine is significant - hope they improve again but can't see them being better then anyone I have put above them bar maybe 1-2 teams.
13. Essendon: Brad Scott showed himself to be a good coach with North so think it was a good pick. Their key defensive stocks are a bit lacking - main reason I have them in this position. Hoping Merrett has a big year - can be a top 5-10 mid in 23'.
14. North Melbourne: Clarkson will have a massive impact on this team and their list is quite strong. If they can avoid injuries I wouldn't be surprised if they finish higher - really like their midfield with LDU looking like a Judd clone imo - if they can get another reliable goalkicker next to Larkey and Zurhaar I think it will push them up further
15. Adelaide: I like a lot of their young talent and having them this low just looks wrong to me but I think North and Essendon are slightly ahead.
16. GWS Giants: Don't know much about their new coach but the loss of Taranto + Hopper are big - probably the team most likely from my bottom 4 to finish in the top 10-12. With players like Greene, Kelly, Coniglio, Taylor etc it wouldn't surprise me
17. West Coast: Hopefully get a better run with injuries in 23' but can't seem them improving a heap. If the experienced players can get back to some form they will upset a few teams.
18. Hawthorn: Think Sam Mitchell will be seen as the best coach in the AFL in the next couple of years. Only have them last because their best 22 is going to be filled with inexperienced players. Will win a premiership in the next 5-7 years with Mitchell at the helm - lots of potential in that team

Same story as this time last year to be honest. They have lost Selwood, Higgins and Dal from the team last year and replaced them with 4 first round draft picks, 3 of which are under 21 and the other 24.

I think other clubs will begin to think about how they keep older players fit and in peak form for longer. Cats will have another serious crack this year with 6 to 7 players not playing round 1 who would play in more than half of the other clubs

Good post and lots of logic.
only material difference in views i have is that I think port Adelaide to make the 8 and Gold Coast a strong chance if they can hold form for longer in the season.
I think collingwood makes way for one of those (they will lost half the close ones this year!) and like you I think freemantle are fringe so could drop out

also not convinced clarko will have that impact on north. Think he and Sam Mitchell will play games to see who gets number 1 draft pick

I am going to make a big call here but I think this is the year Gold Coast make the 8. I think with King back it is going to improve their structure and their young players are all a year older now. They only need 2 (maybe 3) more wins this year than they got last year and I think they can do it.
