Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

I said it earlier in this thread, but Hosie is worth a 2nd shot at AFL level. There is something wrong when guys like Kayne Turner, McEntee etc are regular AFL players while Hosie is playing Sanfl.
Hosie doesn't suit us as we have plenty of small forward types, but he was a cut above throughout the year and especially in the finals. He's better than a LOT of current AFL players and absolutely should be on a list.

Is anyone else terrified by the prospect of drafting a Tasmanian? If we do any good developing him, he's gone to the new franchise. Even if he's a bust, he's gone to the new franchise.
I don't know - I felt like folks thought players like Kernahan and Pavlich were going to come home their whole careers.

Some will and some won't. I don't think you can write a whole state off for the next five years.

The 3 best ones could help us for 4 years while we are in an opening window then we get a cracking pick for them anyway

No more worried than picking a vic metro kid that may try leave after 2 or 3 anyway

Lot of water to go under that bridge re Draper, he's just one of at least a dozen midfielders that look potential A graders in next year's draft. Just some names for you Finn O'Sullivan, Levi Ashcroft, Sam Lalor, Phoenix Hargrave, Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Christian Moreas, Tobie Travalgia, Zak Johnson, Kade Herbert, Ollie Hannaford and no doubt I've probably missed some off the bat especially not getting to see much WA form. Then there's NSW and Qld Academy players like Leonardo Lombardi and Sam Marshall etc.

All have shown plenty this year in what looks to be a real mids draft.
Even now I prefer Phoenix Hargrave

Both outstanding prospects as are the others you mentioned

Outstanding midfield draft in 2024

Kernahan was 30 years ago and Pavlich 20 years ago.

Kernahan argument actually supports the No Tasmanian option. Carlton were known for the brown paper bags. Tasmania will have AFL sanctioned brown paper bags.

What makes you think players want to rush back to an expansion team with zero prospect of any short to medium term success?

I’m not convinced

I don’t think the AFL gives a fat rats about Tasmania.

There’s no competing code, no great population growth etc they’ve mostly been shamed into giving them another license

That's all true and I get that but our future first won't lose value if we are still holding it in 12 months. I get the whole fast track the rebuild but I'd only use it to move up if we really want that player and they are going to be a better prospect than anything available in 2024.

We would also need to be certain we don't have a potential player who wants to come in that we need to trade for in 12 months.

The hardest role for a List Manager is trying to work out future first values. You can look like a genius or an idiot. Everyone at the club would be telling Reid we are going to improve but he will be the one that will be criticised it if we go backwards and give up a high pick to move up a few spots this year.

The main guy in question is the mid, McKercher. He's expected to go early. We currently don't have a suitable pick.

If he was expected to go in the 2nd round where we have a bevy of picks I'd be fine with it.

People are suggesting a future first and our picks 20 and 23 won't even be enough to get McKercher.

You're still okay taking that risk? Let someone else take that risk I say.

Assuming we expect to climb into the top 8 next year, so our future first isn't looking especially great anyway, and also assuming we're looking to offload that pick since otherwise we'll just end up spending it on Welsh anyway, then yeah, I'd take a punt on McKercher if he's looking as good as everybody says.

I'd absolutely take the risk to pick up a guy who tuns into an absolute gun for us for a few years and then, IF he leaves, will bring in compensation that would probably not be any worse than that future first we gave up anyway. The likely alternative is to take that pick to the draft, end up using it on Welsh who we could get with a later pick anyway, or otherwise some solid citizen who may well turn into a decent player. But we've got a lot of decent players. We don't need more decent players, we need a couple of absolute gun players. When it comes to drafting / trading, leaving aside the past 2 years when we have actually tried to make things happen (Dawson, Rankine, taking a crack at North's pick 1), we generally play it too safe, too often. That kind of timidity is a road to mid table OK-ness... we'll build a team that makes finals a few times, but not one that wins a flag.

It's absolutely a risk, but I'm all in favour of a few more risks. That's how you get rewards.

I'm not buying into this Welsh night be top 3 or top 5 talk. There's every chance we will get to use our first pick before a bid comes in.

What are you prepared to give up in a trade to get to a pick to get McKercher?

Our first and a couple of seconds? Anything more is overs imo. The dogs will prolly outbid us.

Our first and f1 would have to be involved.

Pretty much this. And again, I don't watch the lower grades like some people on here do, I have to preface this by saying this is based purely on the opinions of those who watch this stuff and are better judges than I am.

Although future first would probably suit GC better if they're trying to trade down in this draft and accumulate points, and would also suit us better if we can hold our first pick this year as well as get their pick 4.

My concern is if we're wrapping it up as part of a trade for Burgess / Chol / Hollands whatever, if we trade up but McKercher ends up going before that pick anyway then we've basically traded up for nothing we really need. Ideally it would just be a pure swap of picks, in which case we can leave it until draft night to ensure the player we want is still there at GC's pick. But obviously we can't do that because for GC the whole point of trading down from pick 4 is to get rid of it before a bid comes on Jed Walter at 2 or 3.

If they want a really cheap McAdam replacement option having been at the SANFL GF yesterday it further confirmed what I have always and still will always believe that Lachlan Hosie has the ability to play at AFL level and do well, always reminds me a lot of Bailey Fritsch from Melbourne and could play a similar role. He was absolutely dudded by being taken by North Melbourne in that 2019 mid-season draft and dragged into their malaise when from memory the Crows had some interest.

Will still only be 27 next year, nearly 2 years younger than McAdam.

No, Kernahan supports the "people can resist a new club coming in, instead of going home."

Kernahan was getting paid, wherever he went. What he had in Victoria was a bigger city that had vastly better future earning capacity for him, plus a playing group that had become his friends. He wanted to live in a bigger city, with everything that comes with it.

Not every Tasmanian is going to want to go home, just like not every South Australian is going to want to come home. You can't dismiss drafting from an entire state because you assume they're going to want to leave you.

I would be very happy to throw a rookie spot at someone like this, as long as we've already gotten our young ruck drafted.

Given there has been no announcements, I'd suggest Doedee is going to sign with either Collingwood or Brisbane.
If he was staying, he's have signed by now.
Yes and no.

The Port recruits all made their intentions clear before Port were knocked out. But the longer it goes the more likely he is off to somewhere else.
