Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

And Nankervis

Maybe, but we tended to use Nank as a half back flanker instead of a proper defender. I can't say I really see that move being made.

Hey everyone, long time viewer, 1st time poster. Gotta say I really like your train of thought re Dawson. Is Cox the missing piece of the puzzle in defence to make that happen? idk, but he is probably the best available if a decent deal can be made without selling the farm for next years draft.

He would have helped alongside the side getting older, but he's a Fremantle player moving forward. Our game is to tighten our defense without losing a lot of offensive power, and it won't take much to push us from mid-table to a big contender - after all, we probably should have been there this year considering how many chances we had. Even if Tex declines - he'll still be there and still create space for other forwards to operate in/protect them from being doubled teamed and Fog/Rankine/Thilthorpe (if we aren't considering making him a ruck) are all talented enough to fill some of the void this year. Equally, we're not seeing a lot of change from our outside mids.

Considering this draft seems weak - and lacking midfielders in particular - and us entering a 4-5 year period where we need to strike, I'd have gambled on Cox being enough to give us one extra year of contention. After all, most teams don't tend to win it all on their first try and we are well and truly on the clock now.

blowing big assets on a single year flag push in 2024 would be stupidity. When we did it for Gibbs we thought he had 4 years left and we had just played in a GF. And even then lots of people thought we paid too much. Now we're dumping big value picks for the benefit of only 2024. Weird that anyone would be behind this.

Considering how we're trending, I'd rather have as many chances to win a flag whilst our midfield is led by Jordan Dawson then what comes afterwards. After all, there is no guarantee either Pedlar or Rachele develops into someone who can fill that void and no guarantee we'll hit on a draftee/trade in time. Especially when that 'big asset' is a pick 4 (or 11) in a draft that reportedly lacks midfield talent and we're a side who doesn't need another tall or forward who might one day transition to a midfielder.

To add to this, Dawson is 27 next year. Giving us a likely period of 4-5 years to win a flag in this build.

Mind you we did for Gibbs - but then again, we did lose Cameron and Lever so we were sitting on an abundance of 1st round picks that year and needed to do something. Better to have tried and failed then not at all when you're that close, as much as that was a gamble out of desperation.

The draft is already an equalization tool. Further assistance shouldn't be provided.

That said, I wish North all the best, at least they have reduced their debt unlike a couple of other clubs/parasites.

I think the handout was intentionally designed to give North the best hand for pick 4. Two f1s that must be traded this year, gives them Sanders without implicating the AFL
Thats exactly what its designed for.. to give straight to the suns for pick 4 and a free ticket to sanders..

not content with just giving them pick 3 as compo for that useless piece of sh*t McKay so they can use that to get Sanders... cause clearly north didnt want to have to use that pick for him… no, no, no!.. you have to give us that and even more please.. we cant go using our ridiculously generous compo pick for sanders. Thats not fair.

gill wouldve played clarko‘s skinflute whilst agreeing to it all..

they’ll take sanders, curtin and mckercher.

such an insipid and putrid league.

I don't know - I felt like folks thought players like Kernahan and Pavlich were going to come home their whole careers.

Some will and some won't. I don't think you can write a whole state off for the next five years.
The AFL has been open about wanting the Tasmanian team to be immediately competitive.

That will mean extreme concessions to get that club established.

I believe the AFL will allow Tasmanians to freely leave clubs even when under contract to move to the new team and offer financial incentives for that to happen. I think the AFL will be particularly happy for this to happen if it doesn't hurt Victorian teams.

Very risky proposition

What the big issue for us is, we have to trade up first.

So it's a big price.

Dangerfield has advocated for this, so it’s clearly been discussed at some level.

Using multiple picks to move up and then take a Tasmanian is just madness.

So let understand this?

the crows and north were in similar positions in 2020-21, one of these clubs although not done everything perfectly has progressed through its rebuild and can now challenge for finals, whereas the other club has made poor football department and program decisions

So can someone tell me two things

1. why offer assistance packages for clubs that keep making poor decisions?

this is just incentivising failure

2. why is the assistance package 1st round draft picks when all the evidence shows that the club has failed to develop talent ?

i would have thought the better assistance package would be to increase their soft cap so they can invest in their footy department to better develop talent?

This is just wrong in so many levels

You definitely don't want to have the best Tasmanian in the competition when the new team comes in. Recipe for disaster

Yep we were 0-13 in 2020. It just exposes them as a dogshit run club.

Can the AFL authorise a breach of Contract between Club & Player .....I don't think that would stand-up in court

What if said tasmanian has helped win us a flag prior to the tas side entering the comp?

If you're going to use a chunk of draft capital to have a player for a short term crack at a flag, then trade for a player.

It also won't be a Dangerfield type situation where we still had him for 8 years. It would be the equivalent of the Power losing Butters at the end of 2022.
