Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

Well, we had the money to make a play for Clayton Oliver during the trade period, and by the end of next year Sloane and Smith would most likely be retired along with potentially Tex depending on how his body holds up next year. On top of that, Himmelberg will most likely be making his way to GWS, and Sholl and/or McHenry would most likely be delisted or traded. The salary cap has also increased in line with the latest collective bargaining agreement. Just thinking the Crows should have a bit of a war chest to make a couple of plays. The likes of Phillipou, Holland and Ford as things stand should not impact significantly on the salary cap given they are yet to break out and dominate the competition, they all have the upside to achieve that. Tim English would cost a fair whack, but he is also a significant upgrade on ROB and would fast track the Crows premiership run. End of next year English is 27 and coming into his own as one of the most dominant rucks in the competition. McLuggage is the most unlikely, but given he is a RFA it would be remiss of the Crows not to ask the question and put a case forward.

If the Crows want to win premierships anytime soon they need to continue to make major plays like they have done with recruiting Dawson and Rankine, and drafting Curtin this year. If the Crows make the right moves this year I can sense a premiership window starting to open up, and after 25 years I think we all want a premiership sooner rather than later

Its not the cash..its the draft collateral needed. We have our f1 + 25 f1..thats not going to scratch the sides if we want to brinng in a number of those players

Welsh is supposed to fetch a high bid. top 5 maybe so we will need points. The hard fact is I think he we need to lower our expectations. Petty will fetch high dollars and high trade value, let alone Lukocious and Phillippou. Being linked to Hayward as well. Just cant fit them all in. Right now with our squad moving forward, bringing in just two of these players and Welsh would really place us in premiership contention. Not just the window. But success does breed interest amongst FA so we never know who we may dig up as well.

In an ideal world it’s just free agents we bring in and protect trade capital. Hayward’s a free agent isn’t he? McGluggage is the guy we should make our highest paid player, make him an offer he can’t refuse. Lions shouldn’t be able to get near it given their list.

Petty ideally in a couple of years when he’s a FA, but I don’t think we will wait. If our first was going to be used up on Welsh and it’s low, we could split it and give one to Petty and the other for points.

I have read on here multiple times that you can only take as many picks to the draft as you have list positions, so I am assuming there is some cut off to this rule and prior to the draft you can make exchanges to bank points?

Gold Coast went from making 10 list changes and having 9 draft selections for the draft, then prior to draft they did a few pick swaps and ended up taking 15 picks to the draft which would be more than the available list positions.

I also noticed how after matching the first bid on Walter, all their remaining picks shuffled forward gaining them around 230 points or equivalent of pick 47.

You enter the draft with the number of selections equating to the number of possible list spots.

During the draft, you can split those picks for picks you "won't use", and that's fine.

I have no idea why though.

Think you're underrating Matteas Phillipou's 1st year big big time with a 27th December birthday if he's born 5 days later he's in this week's draft. By comparison he's less than 11 weeks older than Dan Curtin who we drafted this year.
He is right up there for me in that we should be throwing a big big offer his way to see if we can get him to leave the saints - he would look very nice in our midfield and he has almost his whole career ahead of him

Snagging him via trade
Snagging Hayward possibly via free agency
Drafting Welsh and Michalanney (if the younger shows his worth this year)

And that is happy happy days for our list

The Lions paid more than reported for Tom Doedee — underbidder Collingwood believed it was north of $750,000 a year — but Brisbane thought there was so much to like about the Adelaide interceptor.

He is a champion of a human being, solid friends with many of their Vic Country recruits and, at 26, the perfect hybrid defender or third tall to play alongside Andrews and Jack Payne until 2030.

They are aware of the risk profile of twin ACL repairs but believe his diligence to rehab will help as he and Ashcroft work through their recoveries together.

And having scouted him heavily in the back-end of 2022 and early this year pre ACL-tear, they love his role as an on-field organiser prepared to be selfless with his on-field roles.

He also made an instant impact after his first ACL tear so the hope is he gets back and in form by the time the Lions hit September next year.
If it was that wouldn’t it have been band 1 compo?

Only one with that info would be TAFKATMS and he got burnt off by the usual suspect.
Who burnt TAFKATMS?.. Volbeat?..

That was epic.. an argument/disagreement between the two “in the know” posting heavy weights on here!..

And we havent seen much of either of them since!

Although.. I suspect one of them might have since returned under a different name.. a famous red head..

Nah, the way Ronald and Volbeat post is different, in regards to punctuation and stuff like that

Do people think that we were prepared for Doedee and McAdam to leave because they are mature players, and in our thinking not likely to be there (or likely to be overtaken) by the time we realistically challenge again?

Or were their contract offers from elsewhere simply above where we ranked them internally and we weren't prepared to budge?

I think we expected Tom to assess his options and Shane was a ehh here is our offer based on how we assess your input ( total input)

I get the feeling that we aren't unhappy with the results

I suspect it's a combination of factors, though I doubt the former was one of them.

One of the key factors was our need to create list spaces, in order to meet the AFL's mandatory minimum number of draftees. Someone simply had to go, and they were the most expendable.

Doedee was coming back from his second ACL, and (in his absence) had been overtaken by Worrell. The fact that Brisbane were willing to offer him a contract much larger than Adelaide were willing to pay was an added bonus.

Salary didn't appear to be an issue with McAdam - they simply didn't see a need to retain him, other than on the lowest of base salaries. His problems appear to stem from a refusal to do the work that Burgess demanded, to improve his fitness. That, and the fact that he was frequently unavailable due to injury, and inconsistent when he did play (sometimes very good, sometimes barely seen). With Pedlar, Rachelle, and Rankine, plus the lesser lights of Murphy & McHenry, his absence from our forward line was rarely missed. His inability/unwillingness to do the fitness work, failing to meet club/team expectations, is probably what put the final nail in his coffin - now he can go and train lazily at another club.

I think that one is on the money, and I also think that both players saw a marked drop in how much we valued them over the season.

Doedee yes, McAdam no. I reckon we wanted to keep him as he offers a point of difference to our forward line. I reckon that was a combination of him not accepting tough love and us thinking he’d not leave so not offering him a decent contract to begin with.

Brisbane in recent years have been very canny with the mature-age players they've brought in i.e Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley, Linc McCarthy, Joe Daniher, Jarryd Lyons, Callum Ah Chee, Marcus Adams and now Tom Doedee. About the only real failure I can think of is Dayne Beams and that was a different circumstance. Nakia Cockatoo I suppose but that was always a hail Mary call with his injury history.

You're missing the powerhouse trade in that was Ryan Bastinac
