Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

Thinking about it a bit more, I suspect the contract offer to McAdam was about forcing other clubs to trade for him. Without an offer, they could wait for us to delist him, then sign him as a DFA. With an offer, he wasn't eligible for DFA status. As a DFA, we get nothing back. By forcing it to a trade, at least we got some compensation for losing him.

They're dumping the bottom of their list out every time to avoid building depth or overspending
Correct ....and is also the WB & GEEL approach

Leaves you very susceptible to injury and nowadays concussion protocols

Given how long Geelong were near the top, won a flag and Brisbane have and nearly did, I’d say it’s a sound strategy.

Having said that cap room isn’t an issue for us, attracting players is.
You think so ? .....I don't

GEEL getting Danger, Smith, and Cameron as freebies was the difference .....their 3 flags thru to 2011 was the result of a great single Draft and Father / Son crop

Comprehension issues again Wayne?

We aren’t talking about collateral to get them but $$$ and cap space. Plus I’m not talking about their 3 flags to 2011, that’s obvious given you brought up Danger, Smith and Cameron.

Cmon mate, in all seriousness you need to take a bit more time in responding.

2 drafts - 1999 & 2001. But otherwise, your point stands.

I have heard thoughts that Doedee may have left partly because he was unhappy with Tex’s influence at the club.

I’m not sure how to interpret this- whether this might be an over- or bad- influence- and I would be disappointed if this was the case.

I am not trying to cause trouble in bringing this up, but I could see how there could be a conflict in cultures similar to the Langer-era vs Cummins-era conflict we’ve seen in the Australian Cricket team.

One thing I have learnt in my work though is that we need to keep moving forward as a club.

And yet Doedee wanted to stay?

He was offered a lot more money somewhere else and spent quite a while campaigning with us for a better offer so he could stay.

Maybe there's other issues but it seems unlikely.

His problems appear to stem from a refusal to do the work that Burgess demanded, to improve his fitness. That, and the fact that he was frequently unavailable due to injury, and inconsistent when he did play (sometimes very good, sometimes barely seen). With Pedlar, Rachelle, and Rankine, plus the lesser lights of Murphy & McHenry, his absence from our forward line was rarely missed. His inability/unwillingness to do the fitness work, failing to meet club/team expectations, is probably what put the final nail in his coffin - now he can go and train lazily at another club.
Worst.

Take.

Ever.

Do people think that we were prepared for Doedee and McAdam to leave because they are mature players, and in our thinking not likely to be there (or likely to be overtaken) by the time we realistically challenge again?

Or were their contract offers from elsewhere simply above where we ranked them internally and we weren't prepared to budge?
The later.
Proven by the fact our offers were below their other offers.

We'll miss them both but not much...and not for long.

Good result really for both players and our club as well.

Recall TAFKATMS having a tiff with subaru 1 time. Not sure if she was the last 1 though. Though she gone now too
Nearly everyone had a tiff with Suburu!

Imo, we were happy for Doedee to leave, but wanted to keep McAdam.
