Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Berg has decided to move on, it's just whether we allow it, Free Agent next year so..
It's an interesting quandry for them. I suspect we won't get a lot for him either way, by trade or FA compo. The bigger question is how many depth talls we need on our list going forwards, and how/when we are able to replace those who are departing?

McAsey is already gone. Himmelberg wants out. Who knows how long Walker's renaissance will last, and when he'll ride off into the sunset?

We don't want to find ourselves exposed, should we suffer injuries to 2 or 3 of our "best 22" talls.

Andrew’s had 16 disposals, 9 marks , 8 intercepts and went at 94%. All above average for him over the season

Billy got 1 kick - a soccer off the ground for a point 1 handball and 2 free kicks against

Billy looked so far out of his depth today it is not even funny.

But I don’t mind Billy and good on him for getting a medal - but no argument his performance was Hall of fame Bad

The "role" Billy had was a fabrication during the commentary once they saw how bad Billy was as a key forward.

It was an old fashion towel up by Andrews.

My guess is he thinks he'll get more opportunities with us and given his versatility I think he will.

If Burgess was genuinely going for more opportunities, he would have angled to join North Melbourne, Hawthorn or any other club who is genuinely lacking in best 22 KPs. Heck, Port Adelaide is crying out for even mildly competent key defenders if he was desperate to return to Adelaide.

Especially as Gold Coast looks to be an easier nut to crack in 2024. Choland McLaughlin are expected to depart, and Casboult is 34 next year. Seems like the skies are parting there for Chris to win out a 3rd forward spot.

This one smacks of Burgess looking for a bit of added job security for no risk - and fair play to him if he is. We certainly need depth at the moment.

I'd forgotten McAdam so that gives us five, but it still doesn't leave us a lot to bring in anyone else.

If we were bringing him in as a rookie then I'd have no issue, but this is a contracted player on Gold Coast's main list which means that we're bringing across so dead wood to take up a value list spot.

Looking at how little smoke there is with us, I think you can well and truly discount us bringing in anyone else. If we were, the world would know about it long before now.

The only other option would have been Chol, but this likely puts an end to our interest.

Ultimately, we do need KP depth and Burgess does bring some versatility alongside being cheap. It also provides coverage to Himmelberg moving on alongside us waiting on Murray to heal up - seeing Burgess has rucked before. It also opens up being prepared for Gollant to request a trade which is probably going to happen at the end of next year with us bringing Welsh aboard. So there are definite reasons to do it, despite it being a meh pick up.

big body = tall and big.

No one cares about a big body at 183 cm. That's not a point of difference. 187-188 cm+ and it's certainly a point.

"Six feet tall is big enough!!"

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t we have the option of moving some main list players to the rookie list if we need to?
Not sure list spots are as tight as everyone thinks.

We do. We'd have to delist and take them in the rookie draft like Seedsman and McPherson last year. So we do run the risk of someone signing them as a DFA before that happens, but they'd be players we think that either won't happen to, or will be no big loss.

The two grand finalists don't have particularly tall midfields - Pendlebury/Dunkley 191cm (Dawson is 192cm)
I think maybe Pendlebury used to play basketball though?

You don't need a midfield of all 6 foot plus players - it's just something people have gotten into their head. 1 is fine.

Neale just won a brownlow and he is a midget.

Anyone know about this Chris Burgess bloke from the Suns who is asking to go to the Crows? Looks a good size, but in GC reserves most of the year...
One of the best players in the VFL ( I reckon the others this year were Sweet and Dow )

West Adelaide boy , reminds me a tiny bit of Mitch McGovern . Looks taller than 191cm , must have long arms
