Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

Would Geelong do 8 and 25 for 10, 20 and a F2?

Gets us into Wilson/Sanders/O’Sullivan territory, while we can still use 25 maybe on Goad
Probably, but I wouldn't. The F2 is a pretty big give to slide up 2 spots, let alone moving out 20 to 25.

It depends if we see a talent drop-off between where Geelong’s pick and our pick is

I’d probably do it

Also 20 to 25 in this draft shouldn’t be much of a difference, if any at all

The only chance of something like going through is on draft night itself, if there is a specific player we want that we know another club is about to take.

In advance, you'd be crazy to give that much to move from 10 to 8. At that stage in the draft, one unexpected selection could move individual players out several picks. And there is still oodles of time between now and the draft anyway for something to shake up our talent order.

Precisely. It’s asinine to think you’d pay that much in advance when you have no idea what might still play out

Yes, although I suspect some of the discomfort is that our history falls on the side of "they will sit on what they have, and think the non-finalists from last year are something to be proud of and double down" rather than "they're waiting for the board to develop, and will play it then".

You’re on record saying getting an F2 for McAdam is pointless. How is adding a ‘pointless’ F2 by trading up from 10 to 8, and trading down from 20 to 25 (in what you’ve called a ‘weak’ draft) paying overs?

True, there is the baggage element; but purely in terms of process and value in negotiation no one serious can argue that price for so little without better visibility of the playing field ahead

I don’t think you’ve fully grasped the arguments being discussed. Again.

And anyone who can mistake the difference between Melbourne’s picks and say ours, well… ;)

The maths for those not quite following

Adelaide’s F2 (a team out of finals 6 years running) plus moving back 5 spots in the very early second round, just to move up 2 spots before any real visibility on targets and availability?

For an as yet unknown player, who might be available anyway as we’re talking only 2 spots.

You don’t do that yet. Not yet.

Ah yes, general avoidance of what you have quoted. Standard

FWIW I never mentioned whether we’d give up our own or Melb’s F2. Way to come to assumptions for the benefit of your own agenda ;)

Either we package up picks this year and next to get pick 3 off North and take Watson …

Lots to play out with pick #1 yet.

Or we wait until draft night and manoeuvre for a specific player or two before cashing in any remaining picks for futures.

All the crying about not improving our list through trades compared to those around us … go look at the trades completed and tell me which club was so brilliant? Who has left us in the dust?

Have we ever trade up for a single digit pick?

No we haven't, or we would have ended up this trade period with Sweet and Soldo.
Going to be interesting to see how they go, given how shit their rucks were, they aren’t going to have to be much of an improvement and they are in front. Both rucks kept out of their old club by very good ruckman.

Your strategy in the past for us has been to pick up a developed ruck from elsewhere to defend our lack of drafting one. Now Port does and your bagging them?

And given ROB hasn’t made top 10 of our B&F 2 years running, should we have just sat on our hands?

Our feral friends weakness this year, apart from Hinkley, were lack of ruck depth and lack of quality tall defenders. They managed to fix both areas in only one trading period....btw these two areas are also our areas of weakness (and midfield).

Now we have the Facebook sycophant's trying to tell us that Ratug and Zerk are fringe players despite playing 16 and 18 games respectively with Ratu being in all Australian contention up until mid-year. If they're classing these guys as fringe how the hell do they rate Burgess.

Angwin, Meeson, Sellar - you really want to use a 1st rounder on a ruck?
Yep .....not our 1st pick, but 2nd pick .....who at #18 will be better, a MID, KPP ?

This is a strong Draft for Rucks ....and if you want to guarantee the best Ruck (apart from academy) ....this is around the mark IMO
