Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

So the question now is which players organic growth is the most important for next year

Tie between Rachele and Thilthorpe. They're our two superstar talents.

Later in the piece. Initially it was Day and Redman. Really disappointed we could land Day in the end. Word I had late in the season was we had tried other “ A” or near A grade mids but all were ungettable - but we saw this as the key area. That seemed to change late I. The year due to injuries to KPD in Cox and then Petty

It does seem like majority of gun players are contracted years out at the moment. Whether clubs got ahead of the CBA or concerned about draft quality following Covid, most have been signed up to long term contracts. Majority of clubs aren’t running with many list spots available

Again, there was article from August last year that we were stalking Cox

Needs to be more than 1 player... we need improvement from several players.

Rachele
Pedlar
Thilthorpe
Soligo
Rankine
Worrell
Nankervis

Hopefully see more of Cook & debut from Taylor.

Sick of this s**t

Once again many other clubs including Port Power get decent players in trade period and the Crows have someone leave and get * all

* off
Mate, you're doing it all wrong. You have to think like a Facebook AFC supporter whereby this trade period has been a roaring success. Reidy and co managed to steal "in-demand" SANFL defensive depth, retain Himmelberg and go into a draft, (lacking quality SA kids), with a fistful of picks.

To be honest I'm pissed off at myself for still being so heavily invested in this disaster. I convinced myself that in 2020 and 2021 we had turned the corner but we haven't. We're still a basket case.

Think like a FB supporter. How's Murphs new tat and Sloane-Dogs haircut.

There are some decent and cheaper options next year for midfield options. Sparrow, Phillipou and Powell all out of contract, hopefully land at least one of those 3, preferably out of the first two. Cumming as a FA to add some class.

Connor Nash as a left field option as a big bodied mid is someone else worth putting a 4 year contract in front of and see if you can lure out of the Hawks. Unlikely, but worth a shot.

There are average players available every year - we need 2 more A graders in our squad to go to the next level. I think Petty could be one of those for our backline - so then need to pry a mid out

Hopefully all of this is put to rest round one when Peds and Rachele come out breathing [emoji91]

Sloane and Smith

Got to get more games into them

Not too concerned we missed out on Petty as don't see him as a priority with the picks we needed to give up given he contracted.

Would have liked us to bring in another experienced played with 2 outs. Imo we should have shown more interest in Billings as went cheap & area of need.
His manager said he didn’t want to leave Melbourne. I know Saints picked up some of his salary, but I can’t imagine he’s leaving Melbourne for less than the 2 remaining years on his contract at the Saints. Is he a player you want for 3-4 years and taking potentially $600k salary in 2026?

Surely Nicks is quietly seething with the incompetence of Reid and co. Next year is make or break for his coaching career and he has lost 2 quality senior players who would have helped him make the 8. None of Burgess or the handful of picks will make any difference to the 2024 end result.

Enjoy your farewell tour Nicksy. Dead Man Walking.
Doedee is injured and would have missed the year.
If history is a guide, McAdam would have played less than half the season anyway.

Neither are make or break.

Yes... as imo he was the player who best met our needs & wasn't going to cost us much in the way of picks.

We have oodles of cap space.

Our issue is we are the 2nd most inexperienced team.

Taken the extra-cocky pills today?

Bet you everything you have planned in your life has not been executed as planned.

Some wait for the perfect planned execution, which they never get right, so don't even bother.

Better to at least have a crack & when it doesn't go as planned, adjust accordingly.
If your plans are to spend your whole life posting on an internet forum then he always be closing

Would we look at paying out Hamill's contract?

List spots are tight and we've supposedly got plenty of cap space that we had earmarked for a decent player.

If paying his contract out means we can draft a developing ruck, then it's worth doing IMO.

Nothing like a flag to shape the collective wisdom. This year it’s ‘see how important it is to recruit mid-level players’.

Last year it was ‘old players are good actually’.

Incidentally, this time last year Geelong also got in a bunch of mid-level players and it got them nowhere.

Are we really going to question their collective wisdom with our record?
