Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

We have traded for a few player who have proven that: Tarrant, McCarthy, Hogan. Did work that good either, was just more expensive...

McCarthy was expensive?

Yes - the draft points system is garbage but I’m pretty sure that literally gave him negative value.

The mistake with that trade was drafting a KPD we didn’t need at pick 8. If we’d drafted a KPF (Marshall) or mid (pick one of many) instead like we should’ve the trade doesn’t look so bad. Basically got Darcy and Ryan out of that one as well.

See those guys all had questionable character off the field. Naughton doesn't seem to have any issues off the field

Yeah fair, a flag would mean it would have truly paid off.

Would love nothing more then to see us win a flag before he retires and Lachie ends up flagless.

I’ve got nothing against the guy tbh. There’s one or two others from Brisbane that are c***s and don’t deserve a flag though - Zorko is right at the top of that list.

There's a fair bit of hindsight with that one though - don't think Pearce looked like a sure thing (hell even if you asked me early 2021 I would've had my doubts). Only since 2022 really has having 2 of Cox, Pearce and Hamling fit felt like an expectation rather than a luxury.

Of the picks that it seems like Freo would've considered, on pure talent the one that hurts the most is not taking a swing at Tim English, and I think 2021 with Stef showed he could be potent as a 1-2 punch with a more stoppage-heavy ruck like Darcy. The others would've either left for Vic anyways or in the case of Brodie we got him regardless. Marshall doesn't seem like one we really put a lot of work into based on Cal Twomey's stuff.

Agree, I spitballed on here somewhere about a year ago that Naughton to the Swans would be on the radar when Buddy retires.
They’ve always chased a big name forward that gets people through the turnstiles, sort of need that in a non-AFL state. A face for the club who the average non AFL follower can get behind and who can light up a game.
Naughton fits the bill more than any other player I can think of at the moment, I reckon they’ll go hard for him. (can we convince them on Tabs??🤣)

Wouldn’t McKay be a better big name than Naughton?

Yeah I watched that yesterday. It was a bit of a strange one, Beveridge brought up basically moving the value to next year and Twomey said they need the points but no one ever discussed Flanders leaving and the impact that would have. Plus, the teams Twomey brought up were basically anyone with a first round pick but I dont see how any of the teams at or around their 1st pick are going to go for it that hard.

I'm probably just trying to cope on us having no chancee getting that pick despite my earlier posts but I dont think Cal addressed the possibilities very well. Would have liked better analysis on what result actually benefits GC more
Is Flanders going to leave? It is possible but no guarantee now that Dew is goneski and Dimmable is on the way in.

Ross Lyon said on FC last year that Freo were very close to drafting Todd Marshall in 2016

We had three pretty decent looking KPDs under 23 at the time - Pearce, Hamling and Collins. Considering how sh** our list was then that’s pretty bloody good imo and we should’ve looked elsewhere.

The only hindsight I can see is the future injuries to Pearce and Hamling.

It was painfully obvious at the time we didn’t need a KPD with such an early selection. I don’t agree with ‘best available’ when it’s also the least needed.

I think the club saw greater things than a kpd within Logue

He was an athletic beast

Bit like how they see chappy now, chappy is a much more natural footy player though, less athletic than logue

Who knows what Logue could've been if he didn't miss a couple seasons with injury, he really only got two full seasons with us and then he left, by the end of that second season we were already experimenting with him (ruck, forward, high half forward up the wing)

I think the pick was fine

I expect Logue to return to Fremantle in 2026 or 27. I’d have him back in a heartbeat TBH.

Don’t mind the Brockman call, but we already have Amiss. Treacy and Jackson.
We could fix most of the issues just going to the draft.
We have lost games due to losing the midfield, none of those guys are going to
fix that. Missing Acres and NOD and we have been bullied.
A preseason of uncontested ball, no real gains in the gym and a high possession
sideways ball movement, but let’s do what Freo always do import.

And now Paul Hasleby with his cover of Simple Minds "Don't you forget about me"...

Yep, I’d take Treacy every day of the week, Hase has no idea

Mitch to play 3rd tall and Jacko to play pure mid / ruck

Edit:

Scarp that, Sturt is the future 3rd.
Another preseason he’s gonna carve

We need one elite small forward and a midfielder with a bit of class and composure that makes good decisions and disposes well by foot.
Someone like Adam Cerra ironically 😫

Sturt should be our medium forward for the next decade.

With Young now proving to be very capable mid, and another preseason into Johno & Ras,
JL committed to forwards who can apply pressure.
Can’t possibly see a future how Fyfe is best 22.
Where does he fit ?
