Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

We cant afford Bolton's contract - not for the output, it's a mill a year on average.

I actually thought Pearce was ok and not deserving of the criticism he got and I think people on here expect the backline to be perfect at all time BUT I've pivoted. If I could get any one WA player in the AFL the next couple of years it would be Sam Taylor. Watching him defend is an experience. I think he'd make us a 3-4 goal a game better team
Yeah, I'm very worried that West Coast are going to have a tonne of cap space at the end of 2025 and drop a megatonne contract on him to replace McGovern

He is a defender you can build around

any ideas about Darcy moving can be put on ice IMO. Why would a club bother chasing him when Grundys getting pushed out the door and going to cost way less in way trade capital

Massive massive list need is a shut down small defender.

We have for years been getting torn apart by the Charlie Camerons of the World and will continue to until we make a move. With Walks set to miss the pre-season we need to solidify that spot.

Thought Clark was very good this week. Can't remember how many Charlie kicked but didn't appear to be dominant at all. Clark made that one holding error otherwise he seemed good iirc.

And there are very very few players in the AFL that have even half a hope of stopping Cameron in that situation.

Shutdown small defenders just kinda materialise out of thin air. No one drafts or recruits a small defender, you just cycle players until that position seems covered.

All things considered, now that the Young experiment is a success, I wouldnt mind seeing Switta in that role. He could be fantastic in it and we could get a Brockman to take his spot up forward

Coz there's only 1 Brodie Grundy and there's more than 1 team that may target a ruckman come trade period.

Yeah. With Walker and Clark plus a few other possibles, I don't think we need to invest too heavily there. Classy ball users and classy forwards moreso

Agree with this, I thought Clark was fine. Wagner has also been very good at rebounding.

Switkowski is a next level of tiny and would be physically and aerially destroyed by someone like Cameron (who is deceptively strong/clever with moving people under the ball, and not actually a complete midget at his listed height of 183cm plus extreme leap). But Cameron does that to almost everybody. His best opponent has perhaps been Dylan Grimes, and I suspect his teammate Starcevich would be another. Back to Switta, maybe on other super tiny players like Pickett and Stengle it could work.

I actually thought McCarthy was a far bigger problem than Cameron yesterday. Both of them have huge leaps, and McCarthy took a lot of marks with his opponent nearby. But he got the ball further up the ground and instigated many Brisbane forward movements, which is different to Cameron being on the end of things.

PS Jackson was a bargain. Don’t care what pick Melbourne get. Not a chance of being better than LJ.
At this stage it looks like asking someone would you have paid pick 6, pick 14 and pick 25 for 20 year old Fyfe/Bont/Petracca and pick 40 something. Yes, yes I would but it doesn’t mean I have to be happy about it 😝😝

After seeing Jackson yesterday as a Solo Ruck surely we all think Darcy is expendable if he is gonna cost 1 mill a season? Yeah I get for culture etc but damn 2 mill is a lot to spend on ruckman

I think we all need to remember that was Darcy Fort he rucked against and not prime Max Gawn. It's not a sample you can use to justify trading Darcy.

Exactly.

Jackson's value is not in winning taps, it's in being around the ball. He can do that playing in a variety of positions, not just ruck.

He's 200cm James Hird...just let that soak in for a moment.

Darcy won’t cost a 1M to retain. Jackson salary 750k, not 1M as reported by some journalists.

I’m with you, if Darcy nets Freo Naughton then I’m all for it. At this point with the list Freo currently have, draft picks are not what they need as they enter the window. Bell needs to be aggressive this trade period.

With Young stepping into the midfield and having that bigger body around along with Ras & MJ (not writing off Fyfe just yet) our main concern is the front 6 particularly a KPF. Naughton would be very handy paired up with Amiss and take the no1 defender as he currently does at the dogs.

do you forget how good he was with darcy in the team? way more impact when hes not getting battered all day by rucks

While it's a strange sensation, being a Freo fan, I actually have more concerns around the backline at the moment.

Triple J, plus Sturt and the accompanying short people are the building blocks to a good forward line. Sure, I'd love a genuine A grade small, in the mold of Kosi, but It's possibly the most complete line up, forward of centre, we've ever had.

To me, the backline looks a little shaky. I've had various levels of concern over all of our talls down there this season, including Ryan. Plus, now it looks like Young is a bona fide mid, we're starting to lack a little class. A fit Chapman becomes vital, as well as the continuing development of Davies.

I'd be barring up if someone like Taylor became available, even though that is extremely unlikely.

If I'm looking at recruiting and list structure, I'm happy with the forward line and our mids, but starting to question the next few years of our backline.

Who would have thought.

I think purely from a value standpoint there is a lot of merit behind the idea we'd be better effectively turning Darcy into an all Australian level KPD (cough Sam Taylor cough) or forward. Like, Jackson is getting top 3 coaches votes on ground consistently playing as the main ruck and is 21.

I think the intangibles of what it says about us losing another young gun and a guy like Darcy who seems very happy here as invested makes it a non-starter but it's hard to deny there's a decent argument the list could be healthier / more balance that way

Davies & Draper? Thoughts?

I haven't seen a replay but it looks like the follow -up from Jackson is a bigger factor in his success than his actual ruckwork (at this point anyway).

I do remember it. I also remember most weeks we struggle to contested mark or kick a winning score. Gotta be aggressive this trade period as Jammomonty said

Are you Wallsy's conditioning agent preparing us for when we draft 3 half back flankers in November?
