Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

There’s evidence our salary cap is reasonably tight tbh. It might not be clear cut evidence but it’s there.

I highly doubt Logue and Acres left just for more opportunity, in fact the extra money they got to leave has been reported - some would even say confirmed.

I’m not sure Liam Henry is leaving just because he likes the idea of playing in Melbourne either. He’ll be getting more money than he’d get here and it wouldn’t even be close.
Don't think it's quite as clear cut as that: we had the cash to up our Logue offer, hunt for Angus Brayshaw last year and get Jackson and Jaeger. We also would've gained cap space from some of the outs last season and from Fyfes pay drop this season (Walters probably as well).

Those moves you've mentioned to me more represent us taking care (and arguably taking overcare) to avoid a Collingwood situation where we have to trade 4-5 guys coz they're getting paid too much.

If there are budget concerns, I'd suggest more that it's us projecting future cap spending than worried about current cap spending. With a team full of promising young players, if they fulfill their potential they'll be due for significant pay increases, and we're probably balancing the books in preparation for that.

Just ignoring the $1.1m reduction from Fyfe and Walters extending on a drastic paycuts and only considering the contracted players we moved out last year I figured we had enough to pay the entirety of Luke Jackson's 2023 contract off those for 2023 (Lobb+Tucker+Meek I had as $500k to 700k+150 to 200k x 2)... and on top of that we put sizable offers to all of Angus Brayshaw, Griffin Logue and a potentially not insignificant offer to Blake Acres.

I think we have $600,000 to $800,000 to play with going into 2023 and when we extended Caleb Serong I suspect we bought that signature with an increase in the last year of his existing contract.

It's also possible that we increased the 2023 payments of Fyfe and Walters to reduce their 2024 and 2025 payments to $200,000 each when they were both extended.

Bat
You said the key word though: contracted. When they're contracted and want to leave, you can tell them "we're selling you to the highest bidder, and if you don't like that then we can just keep you for another year." In that context, their BATNA is staying somewhere they want to leave, ours is keeping a player that we don't mind keeping. Our BATNA is stronger than theirs, so we can play hardball.

When they're uncontracted, especially when they're negotiating with cellar dwellers like Henry is, our BATNA doesn't really exist and theirs is "I'll go in the PSD to a club I was probably planning on going to anyways." West Coast finishing last makes it a bit easier for us to play hardball, but still Henry's BATNA is better than ours.
Batna?

I just don’t see the need to bring in Chol to be honest, we have Amiss , Treacy, Tabs and Kuek who can all play KPF. If we really wanted to play Jackson as Mid/second ruck we could play all of Amiss, Treacy and Tabs forward and let Tabs be the one to roam up the ground to be the marking target, leaving Amiss and Treacy as permanent forwards.
F1 + F2 (Hawks or North from Henry trade) should be enough to secure pick 4 and Sharp.
Big IF Gold Coast asked us to take Chol as well without adding any draft capital, I’d entertain it purely because Tabs looks like he might be done and Kuek will miss most, if not all of next season.

Chol would be a big mature body that we lack right now. Would take a key defender and a lot of pressure off our young fowards. There is no guarantee that Tabs will ever get out there consistently.
Tabs is done. He has been a good stop gap but is now so injury prone, he can not be a part of our premiership planning.

If you play Chol you have to remove Sturt or Treacy. You can’t play Amiss, Sturt, Treacy, Chol and Jackson/Darcy.

Now there is a definite argument that Chol could take Sturt or Treacy’s spot but then they would not be developing in afl… both have played enough footy at Wafl.

I suppose the question is do you want to drop Treacy/Sturt in favour of Chol? Not sure that we gain much in that.

I think we’re going to need around $600-800k plus whatever Darcy, Cox and Schultz are on now to retain all three.

You’d almost be delusional to think otherwise.

Bringing in Chol for extra forward depth would be list management suicide.

Let’s get those guys signed up then start to look what our list needs to win a flag.

Nobody would confuse the GC tall forward stocks with elite. They might be drafting some elite talent but their best tall forward is better up the field.

They are in need of more but I can only see Chol moving if they are paying him a fortune to watch.

On the other hand, Tabs can't spend next year watching if Treacy continues in 2024. We inheret the problem.

If Chol were to come over to be the ruck forward for us then we need to send Tabs back just so they have cover for two years and we aren't burning Tabs in the WAFL.

...unless Jackson is mid next year.. then we need Tabs for backup.

Taberner is absolutely done sadly. His body just cant stand up to it. Im all for recruiting someone like Chol because if Amiss got injured then we really are in trouble. Tall forwards wise that is

Chol is the right age, and I agree on Taberner but for Tab's sake I hope he could get himself a 2 or 3 year deal somewhere if we do end up bringing in a tall forward.

I'm not sure we get much benefit from lining up the C grade options on the bench, aside from purely role playing hard working types.

Realistically tabs should be delisted this year but obviously he is pretty lucky he is contracted

Kuek will be lucky to play next year, and Tabs is cooked.

Lets get real, The only reason we would look at Chol is so we can get pick 4 too. If he comes he would be playing at Peel unless god forbid someone was injured.

That's a lot of coin to have sitting down at Rushton Park

What’s Chol like off field?? Any indiscretions?

The West/Haggers/Summa will have the feelers out and have a few pi’s following him out and about. Need to make sure it’s not another Sylvia/Bennel etc

This is all dreamland stuff. Hase needs to write an article each week, and is clearly stuck for ideas.

We already have one resting ruck in our forward line for most of the match. Do we want another so-so forward who doesn’t defend on good money?

It would be such a dumb move. And a Freo move of old. As others have said, it will restrict ourselves in resigning our current squad, or recruiting someone in the future.

I know it’s not fun, but let’s just cool it this off season. Pick up Sharp and try and move up the order in the draft. There’s no one good available in the trade market this year.

Well let's come up with some article ideas!

Flying Fyfe Spreads Wings: Nathan Fyfe should build his tank to rotate as the high half forward marking target and forward stoppage specialist.

Place your Corbetts: Where can Josh Corbett best contribute in 2024? Can he return with the running power to be the backup/primary for the role above. Back over the reality that Freo can't move the ball out of defence.

Getting Alex Pearce kicking to those targets on the forty-five instead of long kicks.

Who is Fremantle's best small defender to shut down the elite smalls of the competition?

What to expect out of Jye Amiss in 2024, where can he contribute more, what makes him unique. Lots of Jeremy Cameron references.

Players at Freo who need to have a big off-season for Freo and for themselves: Sturt, Fyfe, Jackson, Treacy etc.
