Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I dont think it's a co-incidence that Chol is being heavily rumoured as being shopped at basically the same time everyone started to know Flanders was staying. I'm taking this as proof they are doing what I've been screaming about on the draft board for like a month. Getting a good future 1st is their number 1 priority and the rest will take care of itself
The big question is… are we in the mix for that pick?
We should be, as short of an elite talent leaving us, we probably won’t get a look at a top 5 pick again for quite a long time into the future.

I want us to be, I think we arent adding anyone that could have as much impact as Nick Watson in that forwardline in the next few years and I'm sure he's there are the GC pick but I think it's unlikely. Additionally, any other a-grade forward we bring in is going to cost a lot more than rookie wages which shouldnt be undervalued. But we are probably setting ourselves up for hurt because I imagine it's not happening

If we traded 19 to GC does that automatically get chewed after bid matches or are they able to weasel a way with afl house assistance where they get to hold onto it till the second round?

Could be very valuable for next years draft if they could hold and then move to highest bidder.

Hypothetically could make our 19+F1 more inciting

I like the idea of us bringing in an elite small forward and then that immediately lifts our overall performance so the pick we traded for him becomes a pick in the teens.
Realistically, no small forward we draft is going to leap Schultz, Walters and Emmett next season. Unless we have absolute faith in Watson that we can justify trading for a top pick, we are better off drafting Collard who is a more of a long term prospect. Any natural progression next season will come from coaching and not the list.

Sorry, we dont have 19, we have 21 and the AFL isnt THAT corrupt. It would get chewed by bids

We should be prioritising midfielders not forwards in any trading. We got smashed this year against good midfields as we lacked depth and now losing Henry also. We need depth, not necessarily A-graders, but the next Langdon/Henry/Hill types, who can also impact now not in 5 years time.

Jeremy Sharp perhaps worth a try given he will be cheap.

Bring Ed Allen home? Has had a year at Collingwood. Done well in the VFL but can't break into a ladder leading midfield.

Finlay McRae goes alright and has been dominating VFL but again can't break into Collinwood's team.

Kai Owens is worth a shot. Still only around 22. Michito's brother, late comer to footy and has really blossomed at VFL this year as a midfielder. Great size at 193 cm tall. Averaged 24 possessions. Loves to tackle (had 13 in one game). Can kick a goal. Inside-outside player. Will probably get picked up in the main draft.

The problem with bringing in midfielders is that unless they are A-grade, they are just stalling development time of Johnson and Erasmus who may become A-grade. JoM for example. That's not useful in the medium-long term, which is what our list is about.

We clearly need at least one winger just so we have someone to stick out on the wing in round 1 to replace Henry, hence Sharp.

Other than that, it's top-end only at the trade table (so probably nobody).

Ed Allan signed until 2026

So from the sounds of it, these are the three names I've heard us being linked to:

  • Jeremy Sharp
  • Mabior Chol
  • Trey Ruscoe

Isn't the only link Sharp?

Chol was just Hase filling his quota and I'm not sure I've seen Ruscoe mentioned anywhere other than BF.
I've seen Ruscoe mentioned elsewhere on social media so I'd assume it's at least being talked about, Chol seems to be gaining traction too.

Where specifically? Is it just fans spitballing or people who might actually know?

Reason I'm skeptical is because we have minimal list space and JL said publicly that we're not looking for turnover.

Also Chol in particular does not seem like a JL type (i.e. doesn't defend adequately). Basically, I don't believe either of those two. Sharp makes sense because of Henry.

Shh, don’t tell GC that, we’re going to be shite again and it’s definitely going to be a top 5 pick next year.
Can't see our offer being competitive at all unless clubs genuinely believe this tbh.

Wouldn't be surprised if Melbourne get involved and take both pick 4 and Chol then use picks 4 and 5 to have a genuine crack at pick 1.

No premiership team is ever built of only A-graders, also in the midfield. You need good solid players on the rung below and depth that can rotate through. Look at Geelong's midfield last year that won the premiership. Johnson/Erasmus don't fill the wing deficiency we have.

The problem is, given we are turning into a nursury club, we keep replacing mids approaching their prime with kids needing 3-5 years development. If we want to make progress/challenge in the next few years.

I think an elite small forward could walk into the side ahead of all of Schultz, Walters and especially Emmett.

We are severely lacking the agile, one step kick snapped goal small forward that pulls a goal out of nowhere.

Walters is one of our best users and finishers, Emmett and Schultz are hard working grunt. We need the polish who will take the tag.

Johnson and Erasmus will be that at least. Possibly even next year. If we were really concerned, we could have played Brodie this year when not injured. Also good chance Jackson plays more mid if Darcy is fit.

I think you need to separate mids from wings. We definitely need a winger that can play round 1 (Sharp or similar). I don't agree we need to bring in a B-grade or worse inside mid.

Agreed, sounds like a reach at best.

And talking of reaching, Chol is too nice. Doesnt seem to have an agressive bone in his body. So much so, he didn't take exception to his Richmond teammates grabbing his junk during a huddle. But I could be mischaracterising him. He might have liked it. But either way. Too nice. You need a key forward to have at least a little bit of mustard. Damian Hardwick knows Chol. Let him go at Richmond and now letting him go at the Suns.

I would not be surprised to see Watson kick close to 40 goals next year, he's just ready made for AFL.
