Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Someone posted in this thread a few days ago that Acers defensive transition, to play as a extra big behind the ball won us extra games last year,
Well kudos to you! He just won Carlton that game by doing exactly that. And exactly what he did for us last year.
Well done Bell you overrated peanut.
Getting rid of him is one thing, but giving him to Carlton for free and him “getting a finger” on the gulden kick and then kicking the winning goal just fills me with so much rage. Carlton won that game because of Bell.

Elite operator, super glad to have him at our club!
Just Pumped to see how he can piss it up again this trade period.

I didn't mind him going originally.... And then we got a future 3rd for him. Which annoyed me.
Then we played Hughes (who I rate as a defender) on the wing unsuccessfully. I was disgruntled.
Then he started playing well for the blues in the second half of the year. Then I was genuinely pissed.

We were the only two that saw the value Acres provided on this board. Losing him was huge but losing him for nothing was even worse. Fortunately we got lucky with Stanley because he looks like he will be an absolute gun.

Who would you take as a mature age player that fits what perceived hole?

Personally I would rather back in recycling AFL players that get cut / would otherwise get cut from clubs - there is just more AFL relevant talent in that basket and greater potential for something relevant to fall out. Eg. as much as I think people on this board severely underrate his faults, bringing in Jeremy Sharp (either via a late pick trade or just waiting for the delisting) would be much more useful than any potential mature ager I can think of in a state league.
I think sharp would be a good option if we can get him cheap. I think the list management team and recruiters could find a nice mature key tall defender. I think it would be nice to have a ready made mature body to cover the likes of cox and Pearce. We need more depth in that key defender position.hamling isn’t enough and you can’t have an undersized young kid in that position. I would look for someone like sharp in the middle with a bit of speed long kick and height. Our mids are very young and more experienced sides with an experienced midfield have been able to outperform us. If we could find another small that is ready made that would be the cherry on top hayden Ballantyne mark 2. Look I know it’s not a simple thing to do and the youth is more a preferred option but if we are to see quicker results then why not.

After watching both finals games, I am pretty confident our list is good enough to go all the way. We just need to get experience into our forwards and younger mids. The midfield mix isn't right yet either as the jury is out on which one of Ras/JOM/Brodie is best 22. If we can add a speedy midfielder and crafty small forward our list will be pretty much complete.

All the teams so far have looked incredibly average. Melbourne and Sydney losing because they can’t kick, Carlton and Collingwood winning despite being outplayed for the majority of the game.

If anything a marking Key Forward looks to be the point of difference. Carlton’s contested marking in defence and down the line saved them in the end, and Melbourne would’ve won if they had a half competent KpF.

Big reason why I think we need to persist with playing Cox as a genuine swingman. He’s the best mark on our team and his one game up forward he had 6 contested marks.

Carltank not only made finals but won one due to that stupid ****ing decision. Well done Bell you pillock.

Yeah nothing special from these teams so far. Just a shame we couldn't finish any higher then 14th, could've made a serious run if we had our shit together.

Anyway, onto next year.

Last year Bell stepped away because he was in contention for North CEO position if I understood that correctly? If this is true than Walls was responsible for trading as well.
Bell isn’t actually involved in trade negotiations much from what I understand. He was in 2019 with the hogan thing bc we had just sacked Lloyd. Pretty sure Walls has a lot more to do with the actual negotiations.

So Bells fault for lowballing Acres and Walls fault for letting him go for a 3rd, but we really had no basis to ask for any more with the offer we presented him

Bell is the one in front of camera when discussing trades so you would think he was responsible...

It’s probably futile trying to discuss this point as nothing really changed this year but I’ll say again that Acres is a fraud of a player who didn’t wanna be here in the first place. Stunk it up first two years and improved in his contact year.
Some even say here he won the game for Carlton tonight which in my opinion is laughable. While he ran hard and prevented two goals (one being highly questionable) and also scored a gimme goal, he also contributed just as much to Sydney’s comeback with his turnovers.
It’s funny that some still regard him as an elite wingman and if that is indeed true then the standard must have dropped massively because to me he looks like an athlete and not a footballer, a plodder with shit skills that can run all day. If anyone here thinks this guy can not be replaced easily then we have bigger issues than we think

Offensively, shit. Defensively, very good.

Realistically the bigger issue re Acres is the contract: once you've established that a 27 year old is not worth 3 years on 350k per year guaranteed, it's difficult to go to the trade table and demand a future first. Club in the past 2 years between haggling over deals in 2022 and offering long deals in 2023 (presumably to reduce pay per year) have been real cap-focused, whether to fit more big fishes, avoid a Collingwood/Gold Coast situation where you're in cap hell, or a bit of both.

Hopefully down the line we see the fruits of that. It's always tough at the time to evaluate, but if you went back in time and told Collingwood to let Tom Langdon, Tom Phillips, Adam Treloar and Brodie Grundy go rather than extending them, you would've looked like a madman. However, in that case they would've got significantly more draft compensation and wouldn't be paying 2 players a combined half a mil a year plus to not play for the club.

Sorry but I have to claim Acres as my boy. I posted several times last year in how much I loved his two way running and how his uncle (Barry Acres) was a national champion 800m runner, so perfect genes for a winger. The only thing that will comfort me is if we get Sharp as I think he has the qualities to make a very good wing
