Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Is it fair to say that without Acres Carlton would not win either of the final games...
No? He kicked winning goals in 2v1 situations because of poor turnovers from the opposition.

I'd say Weitering and Carltons midfielders are winning it. Walsh has been quite good, better than Acres, but that won't generate clicks for the vfl.

This board cries vfl media, then listens to the vfl media instead of forming their own opinions, it's ironic

Well atm he’s playing in a Prelim and we aren’t, not saying he would of been the difference but to then use Henry as a replacement only for him to request a trade fmd.
Why was he requesting a trade so surprising though?

Word got out, sneakily by Young of course, that Henry was looking elsewhere end of 2022.. why didn’t Bell just look then? If not, why then did the coaches still persist to develop him at AFL level. Showed nothing prior to 2022, showed nothing half of 2023, then picked for second half of season.
Peel was where he should’ve been developed and deserved to stay until he re-signed.
He wasn’t B22 like Acres, Logue, Lobb were last season.

Waste of time.

Exactly. The only thing he had was the touch on Guldens goals which happened with quite a lot of time left in the quarter anyway. Today was literally just the Melbourne defender choosing to try spoil McGovern instead of Acres. He goes up with Acres and Gov takes the mark and kicks the goal instead.

And not a single person would be talking about him this game if McGovern took that last mark instead.
Or if he drilled it into the post instead of killing the clock before taking a set shot 10m out and Melbourne play around with it for half a minute before the siren and he is torn apart by their fans like he is Chris Mayne.

He took his moment, Viney shouldn't have allowed it to happen, plenty of their shots should have scored better, Pickett should have been more disciplined.

Now they move on and the side that has our first round pick can cry into it while they remember they bombed out in straight sets twice in a row.

And we didn't even play finals. But that hurts less than going out in straight sets does.

We’ve won a final more recently than Melbourne have it’s crazy.

It’s not all one way traffic people.
We got one of the better young running half backs in Clark relatively cheaply & how much do you think Dees fans are wishing they still had Jackson.
We have young Vic guys like Serong, Brayshaw, Young, Darcy absolutely committed to Freo and one of the most exciting young key forwards in the league provided for us by the exit of Cerra.

What hurts me most about getting rid of Acres is that we then decided our midfield is inexperienced and traded in JOM for R2 and Meek.

JOM is older, slower, worse at football, costs more money and his lack of speed gives us issues playing Brodie & Fyfe vs what Acres brings.

Meek would’ve been very handy this year and we would be holding 21, 29, 31 (Henry) 40 & 58. In a year when a heap of clubs will be trading down for points we could’ve ended up with a really good draft hand. Plus we’d have one wing covered already.

**** the Acres trade!!!

Lots of understandable melts in here about Carlton winning with acres so prominent.
For me, a more important thing to learn from last night from our point of view is this - could you trust our forward line not to replicate the horror show Melbourne turned up last night?
I’m not so sure we could. We probably won’t not be that bad but we aren’t hectic either in this area.
We have one elite goal kicker and he’s 19. The most important player on our list by far, already, Jye Amiss.
I trust Sonny Walters to kick clutch goals in finals. But he’s getting old now and needs to be replaced within 2 years. As good as Schultz and Switta might be they are a big down grade on Walters.
Surprisingly, Jackson is probably the next one that can be trusted, but he doesn’t kick many either, in a game last night maybe 1 goal.

To be honest I simply don’t trust the rest of them. We rely so much on smalls to kick goals and it’s such a difficult thing to get right consistently when the pressure of these finals games is fully on and there are bodies flying everywhere. It’s completely different to regular season games. Chances to score are at a premium and good teams will go to work on Amiss to ensure he is stopped. Look at curnow last night for a good example - barely got a look in all night.

If we go into big finals over the coming seasons and end up kicking 10-17 because our forwards are not clinical enough it will be so frustrating.
This issue already cost us a flag in 2013.
Brisbane are well positioned to win the flag because they have loaded up on forward talent and now have a top 4 forward line, one that a fully fit Jack Gunston can barely get into. They will be 40 points up on Carlton by half time next week.
How can we get our forward 7 to become top 4 in the AFL? It’s closer to the bottom 4 right now. We need new personnel in that area I reckon.
Relying on defensive and midfield and Ruck dominance and a wasteful forward line does not win flags. We have seen that enough times by now. Now is the time for the club to do something about that not the day after we painfully lose a prelim in 2025 or 26 having kicked more behinds than goals.

And can people stop mentioning Meek please? Even with Darcy out injured, who would he displace to get a game for us? He got dropped by Hawthorn. Any player can be “handy” if your list size was infinite
Agree in principle (that him going isn't a big deal) but I reckon 100% he plays ruck instead of Jackson when Darcy was injured.

Might sound a bit naive considering he hasn’t played many games but I absolutely do trust Sturt to kick set shots. I’m actually quite bullish about our forward line tbh, I think the mix is right with Emmet thrown in there too.
I’m more worried about the midfield and the missing piece is a Shuey type, big body mid that’s fast and explosive. Young could be that, we’ll see how that plays out I suppose

He may have played but I can’t help but think (knowing JLo and his conservative approach) that would have probably come at the expense of inclusion of Sturt and Emmet in the team in the second half. I’m not sure that would have been beneficial for us in a long run.

We have a much better forward line than Melbourne. Melbourne have no KPFs at all. The best players there are Pickett and Fritsch.

JVR and McDonald ?? Spare me. Joel Smith?

Are you saying that Amiss, Treacy and Jackson are comparable to that?

Speculating on how and what might happen to our forward line in a final when we get there and in some way how that's related to the Demons losing to Carlton boggles the mind...

Don't forget Sturt.

I actually thought Joel Smith was one of their best 🤔
Anyway we don’t want a forward line that is simply AFL average. It needs to be one of the best in the league, otherwise we will fall short.
At least Sturt is showing some promise as a medium forward of genuine quality.

Meek deserved the opportunity to seek new and greater opportunities. He was a good pick-up for Hawks. He also got dropped to the reserves many times so hasn’t established himself. We essentially got pick 41 for him, which is about par.

Club preferred to keep Logue but he was being played as a forward (which he was not) just to try and get him a game. He was a good pick-up for North but sadly he has done his knee and will miss a large chunk of 2024. We essentially got pick 21 and change for him.

Tucker if not under contract would have been a good chance of being delisted or let go. He also needed a change to get greater opportunities. He added to North’s midfield mix but also was dropped a number of times. We essentially ended up with a late 3rd as trade.

Lobb wanted out. We got four years of Lobb and then we traded him with a year to run for two second round picks. That was a good trade. We used one of those picks to add JOM. JOM was no where near as bad as posters have made out. He was in the middle of a good run of form when the MRO inexplicably suspended him for a regulation tackle, which if with Collingwood or Carlton wouldn’t have missed. Some players when changing teams take a while to gel and find their mojo in a new team. I think the club will know how to better fit JOM into the mix next year.

The big loss and strange willingness to offload was Acres. It is an area we have already lost a number of players. I don’t know why we played that one like we did. My understanding was Acres was lowballed as part of signing LJ and re-signing Serong, but that was under the previso that Logue would be re-signed. Also understand we thought we had Angus Brayshaw in the bag. We missed out on Brayshaw and lost Logue. We needed to work harder to keep Acres and then just let him go for what is now a late third rounder and not much better than Norths Fourth rounder. Massive stuff up.

No issue with the other four (Meek, Logue, Lobb, Tucker) but Acres being lost for next to nothing whilst improving another club just strange. We could have at least tried to upgrade a 3rd to a second. Pick 53 or whatever it now becomes (it is getting worse with every finals win by Carlton) is terrible return.
