Bruce was a shocking ruckman

He wasn't that bad for a forward. He'd halve contests. People had it in for Bruce but he was a solid player. Lobb isn't Gawn but he can make it a contest. It's surprising how few players can do both to a high standard.

when Ben king joins us next year maybe he can take that role?

It's the only reason you'd take him IMO. If we can't ruck one of them they'd be a liability. He'll go to the Bombers anyway.

I always felt a deep level of cringe whenever I saw Bruce schlep into the ruck.

We were never very good in the ruck anyway so I didn't think it was much of an issue. I've never rated rucks that much anyway though. There is usually only a couple of dominant rucks in the competition that are worth bothering with at any one time and carrying two specialist rucks is just wasting a spot. Those second rucks chop out for 10 minutes a game. If they can adequately halve a contest that's good enough IMO, they just need to be able to play in the forward line at a decent standard.

I must be taking crazy pills but I reckon Shiel would walk into our midfield and improve it. I'd only take him if it's a freebie, at his age he's worth nothing but he's not dogshit. He can be a good option for us IF he's fit and IF he's free.

You have clearly been given Lethlean's Script by mistake.

Warnings: Taking of this medication can induce delusions. Most typically exhibited by the Jesus Syndrome where people in your presence will have thought by you to have magically recovered from any ailment and become more youthful.

Lol, all good.

To me the options (and i dont even rank them cause i think they all make sense in their own way.

1- Essendon gets Gresh at $800k and 2nd or 3rd or swaps (or whatever just not 1st) rounder. We get Band 1, Shiel at $1m a year.
2- Essendon gets Gresh at $700k. We get Band 2.
3- We keep Gresh

There might be some other variations (we swap 13 and something for their 8) but any scenario where we end up with Shiel and no first rounder is idiotic.
1 or 3 for me please.

Of late the forum focus has been on Gresham and Sheil. We can debate forever about individual players, their positives and negatives, however it will be out of our control.

To bridge the gap at the highest level I believe we need to recruit:

A big ruckman(Moyle/Flynn/Darcy?) to free up Marshall to allow him to swing between key positions and back up ruckman. Marshall's attributes could be better used in a number of positions if freed from the sole ruckman.
A power mid fielder (?).
A key tall backman (Petty?) to match the oppositions key forward.
A tall contesting forward (Petty?/Chol but needs to become aggressive rather than being lackadaisical) who can bring the ball to the ground, and
Add depth and speed to midfielders/small forwards (Henry, Dow? and others) to meet RTBs game plan and break the lines.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a key saint/s swapped to achieve an outcome.

Yes all true IF the Saints were trying to win the flag next year at all costs. I doubt we have the draft capital to achieve this.

BUT what we have been told is that we are mainly meant to be following a youth policy (ie Dow/Henry and younger including young draftees). This is rinse and repeat for the next several years.

They will be going for a discounted rate because they have to offload them this year before they get confiscated next year . 3 free draft picks - afl has lost the plot .
Yes and no.
Playing Devil's advocate this IMHO is exactly how an assistance package should look.
Future picks 19&20 that will obviously be used for trade, most likely for a couple of reasonably good players, but not A grade.

Pick 19 this year at the clubs discretion to bolster this year's position.

These measures offer immediate improvement without access to the cream. It's not too bad in isolation, it just sucks for those not getting it.
