What if we trade Steele and use that pick on bailey Smith?

It's really rare to have a ruckman that spoon feeds a midfield though. Sandilands could just because of his size, then it's probably Nic Nat in the A grade tier and Gawn in the B grade tier. Even Sean Darcy doesn't really nail the hit outs.

Most ruck contests are 50/50 at best, clearances come down to the midfield. Ro is probably one of our best clearance players.
Trouble is Ro hurriedly throws it on his boot & dumps it forward

I got laughed out the door in May for suggesting Steele should be shopped around.

To me he doesn’t exude leadership material. Maybe those who have gone before him have set my expectations high, but he doesn’t do it for me. I do accept he has been great during a period where we didn’t have many leaders around, but I think it’s different now.

For mine, if he netted us 2 quality picks, you take it.

This is some strange logic to me. If we lose Gresham and Steele next year we probably sit bottom 4 for a couple of years while players develop. People suggesting Paddy Dow takes over from him are tripping. Dow averages 13 disposal over his career and this year his best return was 24. Steele rarely gets under that.

If you don't like him as a leader you give the role to someone else. Not cut you legs off because you don't like the colour of your socks. To me Lyon wants Steele to go up a level and suggestions that he is on the trade table is more to strip back his ego and make him hungry. Selling him off would be new level of self harm that even Trout and Pelican would have struggled with.

We have had 2 good drafts and about 16 terrible ones in the last 20 years. Now we are selling off our best players to get back into an ordinary draft? At that point we might as well give up on playing finals again under Lyon. We are in full rebuild again.

I don't think we should trade him. But I do remember when we held onto Jack Steven when he wanted out at the peak of his powers. We could have named our price. A few years later, he left for next to nothing and we were never a finals team. Thanks Cho!

Port never have a problem of trading high, something we could learn from. We never seem to trade any of our players for first-round picks.

Port sell their NQR players for top dollar, not sell their best. They are very good at making a call on players while they still have potential value.

Stuv was struggling off field. Very different situations.

You know my favorite thing about Henry nominating us is. It's that we had zero leaks about us being the front runner etc. Other clubs (like Hawthorn) are beating their chests and we just quietly got the job done. I'm hoping that means there are more irons in the fire for other deals this year that we haven't heard about

No thanks
A much worse kick AND has baggage
Wouldn’t do it for smith and their first either

Steeles going nowhere imo

He needs feeding and is a mess off field. That would be gambling the house for one spin of the roulette wheel. If you're trading Steele it's to do a ground up rebuild around Owens, King and Phillipou. Probably drop below sides like Hawks, GC, North etc for a few years.

That would be a pretty serious structural change.

as opposed to opposition intercept marks from shortpasses under little to no pressure that i witness every single week(not just barrass and mcgovern or lever and may)i have no issue with Ro doing this and others should follow

Season 6 What GIF by The Office
If true, that’s incredibly unprofessional of McCartney…our group that go to training get nothing out of SOS or Gubby, just the way it should be!

Love the Coniglio comparison for Steele.

Even when he was named captain, a few on here had reservations about how quiet he was, reserved even. Really we just threw the C on the best player we had once it was clear that Geary was done.

So who's the best captain now?

Wilkie? Sinclair? Crouch? RoMa?

Wilkie is our best leader no doubt about it!

Steven asked for a trade before any mental health issues when he was at the peak of his powers. He had just won another BnF. One of those sliding doors moments.

Quality post..great read!

Would've hoped for more until Connors basically went on AFL.com begging clubs to show an interest. What an awful pick when you compare to what came after him.

Wonder if it was development, coach or just personality/drive of the player

100% development.

Billings was a universal top 3 pick. There was debate about who the Giants were taking and who we would be left with.

Bontempelli was a flyer. No other team would have grabbed him top 8-10.

Cripps went early. We were talking about him at pick 18!

It's the Dunstan pick really but again, development didn't work out. Luke looked a gun early days but just never came on beyond that.

We want mids, but we don’t have the draft capital for the best rated kids.

Reid 1
Mckercher top 5
Duursma top 5
Sanders top 10 and probably tied to north
Rogers tied to suns
Wilson probably gone by our pick too.

6 highest rated mids off the board.
Best key position players gone.

George Stevens contested ball winner but slow paced considered vanilla.
Getting speculative by here.
And a handful of wingers with no proven contested game.

I’d say if we don’t want a KPD or HBF here we may as well trade it.

If Melb had kept pick 2 (that GWS ended up taking Jelly Kelly with), they are on record that they would have taken JB.

Drafted into a club that had lost it's identity, was stuck in a back water with a coaching structure with little to no development focus.

I was really looking forward to what JB could achieve under Ross but unfortunately more injury bad luck prevented that.
