The thing with Jones is that he has something that we don't have much of and seemingly isn't easily replaceable. I don't think it's a big issue giving him another year to try make it happen, especially when Ross clearly likes him. As we've seen with the cuts already, there's other players that were on the list that weren't good enough footballers. He's not in the way of recruiting anyone else this off season.
We pretty much replaced him the whole year. He may have "something" but its pretty useless to us if he can't play.
Not saying we should necessarily delist him, but let's not kid ourselves we're going to get even half a season out of him.

Not really, I just said that I would listen to offers for some of our oldest players, if something valuable was offered I'd consider trading one of them for future gain.

I don't have many untouchables on the list, maybe King, Marshall, Sinclair, Steele, Nas & Owens. Doesn't mean I don't like or rate other players.

If people have Wood or the others as untouchable that's perfectly fine, I can understand the nurturing argument. I just don't know if hanging on to those players will necessarily help us get towards a premiership. I think we'd miss Gresham more than those three long term, so it would want to translate into a pretty good player to replace him.

Trading out Billings seems pointless to me in a shallow draft unless we get a decent future pick.

We were pumped in the midfield against GWS so it's not an area we can really hang our hat on, we clearly need to improve.
There is no value in trading Hill Wood or Ross from a draft point of view.

the value in Howard Billings and Gresham is that we can get a return that is useable in the draft for players we can cover.

RTB's system allows Cordy to cover Howard.
Billings has been missing in action most of the last 2 seasons. PLayers have gone past him.
Gresham would hurt, but then he has frustrated more than he has delivered.

Remember only one of the 3 i've mentioned were selected for the GWS game.

all 3 you mentioned were chosen.

No matter which option is chosen, its a risk. But standing still is the worst option available

Lol the melts will be unreal when gresh goes for a second rounder and coff and billing’s go for SFA

Only one that would annoy me is Coffied and im still against giving him a flat 2 year deal with no triggers.

players need to start earning a future with us and what they did 3+ years ago or that dirty word potential 5+ years after they got drafted shouldn't be reasons to tie ourselves to players.

I don’t think anyone is anticipating all 3 going and most very keen for Coff to stay. Doubt any club is going to give up enough for Billings but the club may just be sick of him. Doesn’t seem an RTB type. Seems more likely than not that Gresham will go.

I think the underlying theme in this thread is we have a core but not a top 4 list. We need to do some shuffling.

What do you gain by making them gone?

What is the concensus on trade value for Dow? 3rd round picks are useless this year, so a future 3rd perhaps? I just cant see him getting much more currency based on his output so far for Carlton.

This is fine, but players must have had an opportunity to earn a future with us if the non-compliance with earning a future is going to be held against them. Coffield did his knee, then had his rehab mis-managed (nearly all our-long term injured suffered further injuries and the rehab guy was sacked) so the last two years can't really be held against him if we are being fair dinkum.

I wouldn’t be angry at all 3 in all honesty

Gresh just isn’t that good. Coff has been stuffed with injuries hardly can blame him for a change and secure contract security.

Same with Billings, he has barely any value.

I’d obviously be melting if we get * all for Jack but still are paying a wedge.
Chances of finding a better player than Gresham at pick 37 would be very low.

Not to mention we already have bugger all of anything decent between the ages of 23 and 28

Being healthy is a big part of these guys jobs and alot of this potential talk about with coffield was off the back of 2020.

he was poor and dropped in 2021.

If the club was thrilled with everything they saw in the last 12 months. He would have been re-signed already.

Its harsh. i completely recognise that, but hard calls need to be made to become better.

1+1 in my opinion, is the right deal for the club to offer coffield

Goodwin - thick as 2 short Planks. How he can be a premiership coach and RTB have none is a mystery for the ages. RTB would have won multiple premierships with the Dees list.

We will never know of course, and speculation on my part, but one guy is a footy savant the other a clueless fool.
He seems like a good bloke to me. You don't have to be Einstein to win a flag if you've got a good team and they play for you.
Part of a coach's job is to get your team up for finals, not have them choke or tighten up and let them off the leash when needed. I remember Jason Gramm's game so well because he was the one playing to win it and didn't seem like he had the weight of our history on his shoulders. Needed a few more to play like that.

That Bulldogs purple patch when they won it, and when the tiges got their first in a similar way. That's the kind of thing a coach would love to be able to bottle up. McRae had it earlier this year - maybe a few months too soon. Doesn't matter how smart you are if things don't go your way on and off the field at the right time.

Anyway, guys like Bont/Cripps/Petracca were born to win GFs. Gawn, the Burgoynes. Guys oozing with ability and confidence. Philippou is probably our best chance at that kind of player we've had for a while. Owens has the swagger but needs the skills.

The issue with Coff is he might just want a fresh start.
This is a fair point. I suppose from where I sit putting pressure on him with a 1+1 deal would be a shitty way to treat a player we mismanaged and showed a lot on his first few years. If he just wants to go or is being offered something absurd then I’d wish him well but if he’s going because someone has 2 on the table and we wouldn’t match it, that would be disapponting to me.

I know a few Swan Districts people who had Sam Taylor and there wing and rate him just as highly - most probably the reason he was pick 6 in the draft and righting off a 21yr old is a bit early.
3 years in the system, 194cm and 84kgs.
No doubt they were hoping he'd grow, but what do you propose we use him for?
Both Sharman and Battle are better at their respective positions and if the Hawks are trying to dump him already then it says a bit IMO.

Coffield is a very different case IMO.

It's not like he's been unprofessional & half arsed in establishing himself as a senior player. It was a freak injury and the resultant soft tissue problems that often follow an ACL.

All indications suggest he's been absolute spot on in his rehab too.

The talent is undoubtedly there and it's in a role that is a need.

Letting that talent walk over giving him the security to keep working his backside off would be madness.

Not to you maybe but if the vision is sound then it still sells

Good luck with that. If they plummeted us to bottom 4 for a couple of years there would be a spill IMO. Making finals might actually be a weight around Lyon's neck now.

Grainger - Barrass is a player we should be looking at - Hawthorn have been attempting to turn him into a forward , where he was a standout key defender in the draft.
I'd back Eright and SOS to get the guy to become a topline defender.

He looks terrible. Big no from me. They must have decided that he won't make it.
