I think Ralph needs to team up with David King to work out all the nuances of the Gresham /Shiel situation.

I'm thinking ....
Howard to the Swans, Swans first round pick to Essendon, Aaron Francis to StKilda , Gresham to Essendon, Saints Compensation to Essendon, Parish to the Bombers and GWS first round pick to Essendon, Shiel to Saints.

So Essendon retained Parish and Redman on five year contracts, are bringing in McKay on a fat contract, are talking about bringing in Gresham on a contract that'll prise him out of restricted free agency and could sign Goldstein. There were also reports of a 2 million dollar war chest at the start of the year - which Parish, Redman and McKay would take a massive bite out of.

Shiel's six year contract must be pretty heavily back-ended if the Bombers are this desperate to dump him with two years left (and have been since last year). Looking at all these information it seems likely they can't land Gresh without doing so.

I think the Shiel deal is an attempt to upgrade our compo pick though.

Would either be Gresh for Band 2 (pick 20) or Gresh + 32 for Shiel + Band 1 (13)

It should be compared to the Hannerbery deal - we took on his contract and they got a swap pick 28 to 39 ---- so 3rd pick at best.

He has not played a full season since playing for the Bombers , well past his prime which was 5 years ago.

31 is worth about 51 this draft. If things work out we won't use any picks over 25 ( after we trade, Coff, Howard, and FA for Gres and the Haynes Salary dump)

Clark just isn't a need anymore for them though. They can get far better quality players than Clark with those types of picks, only way it happens is if no one wants to go to them at all

Gresh won't nominate until he knows how much Dons are willing to pay and as we can see by all the reporting that is fluid at the moment and subject to the AFL ticking off any deal around Shiel so no need for him to do anything publicly till all the ducks are in a row. You only nominate once you have a committed offer from the club you want to move to and to put pressure on your current club to deal exclusively with them. The longer he keeps his options open the bigger the potential pay day.

FWIW I also laugh at the thought of you guys giving us 13 in any deal for Shiel, I think it’s shocking for you. But Gresham also isn’t worth anywhere near band 1.

Meanwhile Bombers will search for someone like Gresh for the next few seasons and spend their salary cap on players like Perkins and Caldwell and struggle to make the 8 for the foreseeable future. Essendon fans will be thinking "What if?" for a generation.

I don't like seeing our players become Bombers so it would be a decent result for me. Peace.

Not in isolation, but if it helps us get that band 1 compo you could look at it as pick 31 moves us from end of round 1 compo to pick 13...

Eseendon get Gresham, Sheil off their books, a 4 dp downgrade

Saints get a 4 place upgrade, Gresham off the books, pick 13 and Shiel.

It is not a bad scenario but just as unlikely as any other about.

They get nothing out of any of that. They just go back to paying Gresham $700k and we have no say in it. It has to benefit both sides or it won't get done. We can threaten to match but I think we've probably already used his compo in our heads and seem to not want to pay him.
