A funny twist on that would be

Step 1 - Essendon put up a big fat contract for Gresham
Step 2 - St Kilda gets band 1 compensation
Step 3 - We trade pick 31 to Freo for Henry
Step 4 - We offer 51 for Shiel or they can keep him and his contract
I hate this stuff. No way would we do it and we shouldn’t. May as well play 18 Weightmans and play for frees all day.

Dont know if that would happen for a couple of reasons.

1. Dodo is going, we need to look to trade fairly with Essendon down the track
2. FA and trade period overlaps so the two deals would need to be completed

Absolutely on board provided it’s a decent pick. I’m glad we are using our brains for once. Same as Shiel - player doesn’t matter so much, all about regenerating around that young core

So he's 32 next year we commit to 2 years, what is thew benefit unless we get a draft pick involved.
The pick is the reason why.

But…. You would think It probably spells the end to Coffield if it happened.

Both Haynes and Shiel would be playing senior footy for us if it happened. Maybe not every week. But they would be coming because it gives us picks and we can use them in the short term

But they’ve both only got 1 year to run. If we can fit it … If Haynes brought in, say, a late first?
Fair enough, however Haynes wants two. If we got say pick 13 and Sheil and say pick 15 and Haynes, I would be calling SoS an absolute genius.
Sheil and Haynes while not at the top of their game are still AFL standard footballers with Haynes still being an excellent intercept mark.

If we lose Howard or Coff, he would be a ready made replacement. Would mean the end of Highmore I reckon though.

We’re using what we have which is smart, if the deals make sense it’s great stuff.

I’m all for absorbing the contracts of players who will contribute to the success of the club in the short term, and obtaining decent picks in the process.
It means we can regenerate the list without bottoming out, teaching our young players how to perform as professionals and sets us up to continue to compete year on year.
No part of me wants to bottom out and eye off the irrelevance that North Melbourne is suffering

Howard out play short for a year or two with cordy/Haynes then hopefully Van Es is ready.

Take Murphy from Sandy with a mid first and hope one of them come out good.

Definition of selling our future.
A well used first round pick can give you a 15 year player.
You want to blow 2 on a 3 year player.

Yep, purely picks wise, fabulous. I’m not at all fussed on Highmore. Surprise he hasn’t been delisted yet tbh. Coffield would hurt, but end game and bigger picture …,

Its all fine, except there needs to be something in it for the Saints.
As its reported , there isn't.

Its also a fact that you can't tie a trade to a free agent Movement.
One has to go before the other.

Possibility.
----------
Saints trade their current first round pick for pick 8 and Shiel .
THEN: Don's offer a free agency deal for Gresham, if it doesn't trigger the tier 2, we are screwed over. But not really , its still a decent deal to take Shiel off their books.
----------
Don's offer free agency deal for Gresham and pay him extra to trigger tier 2 . ( which will cost them every year of gresh's contract ).
Then the Dons trust StKilda to take Shiel of their hands for? The compensation pick? With 8 going back? Sorry if 8 isn't coming back i'm walking away right now.
-------------------

I can't see the handshake deal thing panning out.
As i understood it yesterday (which was stavro#4 mail i think)

1. Essendon offers Gresh FA deal which triggers band 1. Gresh signs.

2. Saints get band 1 (pick 13)

3. Saints trade whatever (3rd rounder) for Shiel

You can probably swap step 1 for 3 and its the same outcome, ultimately yeh, its handshake and it requires some goodwill but THAT deal makes sense on paper.

Don't understand what you mean. How is it selling our future when we are literally gaining two first round draft picks? Did you misquote my post or something because I can't work out your argument.

“St Kilda aren’t interested in keeping Jade Gresham despite what they say publicly. He’s also well paid, and they need more midfield support.

“Gresham would leave as a free agent and because Essendon would pay him enough it gives St Kilda either a first-round or end of first-round compensation pick. It would be 13 given their first pick is 12, or at the end of the first round of course.

“Then the trade period sometime later, St Kilda send a pick back to Essendon for Shiel. The theory goes it could be that same pick that they use in the Gresham deal. List managers I’ve spoken to said they would be floored if the Saints gave up a first-rounder for Shiel.

“They’ve got 31 so it would be more likely that the Saints would give up 31, or that second-round pick for Shiel and Essendon allow it given the Saints would be taking on Dylan Shiel’s wage at the same time.

“Essentially it’s a pick buy. St Kilda will be buying a pick here.”

Just listening to SEN talk about Melbourne working on an "earth-shattering trade". Made me wonder as to what that would look like if the Saints were involved. Could we be working on a deal to send Steele over for Pick 5? I don't think it'll happen, I'm just putting 2 and 2 together as where theres smoke theres fire.
This is just referring to the fact that they need to offload Grundy.
