Thanks for the clarification - so walters could head to indig development position without us paying out his salary. And fyfe could become brand ambassador for the dockers for say $250k annually… whats that worth in slaary cap saving -$500-600k a year?

Honestly I can’t see Fyfe, JOM or Aish being “retired”.

I can see Walters being tapped on the shoulder. Already demoted to Peel and played the sub role more times than I can be bothered counting.

I didn’t think Fyfe or JOM were that bad. JOM started the year terribly with some issues in the pre-season. Fyfe was missed in that Essendon game but returned after that game and did struggle in the last three games. Both to be managed on and off as Sub and games rested.

Aish seems to have accepted his depth role. He would have likely played in the final against Brisbane with Young’s injury. Aish becomes the role that Hughes fulfilled.

Walters is a bit older than Fyfe. He is 34 in January before the season starts. A club legend but he has lost all his tricks and is very slow and no longer agile. Really struggles to get off the ground. Ran around at Peel and contributed very little.

If he does stay on I could see a on field coaching role for him at Peel so a move to the rookie list but I doubt this would happen.

Someone can confirm but I thought that they brought that veterans list component back for one eligible player where not all the salary counted. If Walters “retires” then Fyfe can move into veteran spot. Not sure if I have read the tea leaves correctly on that.
Aish is good depth. I don’t think we can cover all of JOM, Fyfe and Sonny next year. Maybe bring Sonny into a coaching role for his last year to free up a list spot. Fyfe is right on the brink. He was good in some games but his lack of pressure and speed were shown up later in the year. Maybe just roll him through next season. JOM I would only play similar to Aish as depth and that will depend on our off season

The TPP is going up 3m over the next couple of years. Freo don't need Richmond to pay any of his salary for us. 3m + retirements to Walters, Hughes, Taberner and Fyfe is more than enough to bring in whoever we want.

Richmond would be mad to let the trade fall over; they stand to gain an additional 1st rounder in a super-draft at the bottom of a rebuild, with Tassie just around the corner. Just as we'd be mad to self-sabotage at the trade table (again).

It doesn't work like that. How do you think we found the money for Darcy, Cox? Their extensions came just after the salary cap increase was formally announced. Long contracts for Serong, Young, Treacy, etc? Brayshaw to come. These players would be courted by Vic/SA teams and we have to pay them good money.

The salary cap is planned out years in advance. There's no magic war chest created for Bolton from the increase in cap and retirements. That money is already allocated to players already on our list and planning for Warner. There would have been an allocation in place for McDonald, but that has been moved towards Treacy's long term deal.

Bolton is a massive spanner in the works for the planning. Have to scramble to fit him in. It is imperative to get Richmond to pay a significant chunk of Bolton's salary. Otherwise Warner becomes exceedingly difficult and we probably need to lose a Cox or Darcy or multiple Switta-level players.

That's just it though. We don't need them to dump the salary. I'd Offer pick 9 on day 1 and let them know we're taking 10 to the draft. If they fk around I'd pull a Brisbane/St Kilda tactic and trade out Port's 1st rounder and F2 on day 2 for an F1 to Sydney.

Would you prefer taking pick ten to the draft over being able to trade a future pick for an elite player that we can afford to pay because Richmond have paid for one of our existing elite players?

Clarification please🙏

If we retire someone / someone retires, does their payout come out of our salary cap for next year? Or is this a oneoff payout separate from the cap?

If its the former, then keeping fyfe, jom and walters make a lot of sense next year to then have more cap space for warner end of next season.

If its the latter, then if kossie is even vaguely an option, you would surely be clearing the decks to make cap space for him as needed?

Ta for help

If Fremantle delist a contracted player the entire remaining salary is added to the TPP (total player payments) for 2024 - unless they are picked up by another team but if they are and the contract is less than the Freo contract they were on Fremantle pays the difference up front.

A retiring player can reach agreement to be paid out less up front, but most clubs tend to move them to the rookie list to have $85k or so knocked off the TPP for that following season.

We can afford pick 10 and Bolton's salary, if that's what your asking. And, there should be another 2m+ to spare in coming years. Of course, it's all guess work forme as salaries aren't public info. Basically, the AFLPA have negotiated a deal for TPP at the right time for buyers.

I get your point but as yet I've heard nothing reliable that Freo are scrambling to work out the TPP. I'll leave that to Collingwood. I do know we saved a bucket load when Hogan and Lobb left.

It's widely reported that all clubs except WC and Essendon had CBA% increases in their player contracts. There isn't necessarily more cap available because of the cap increase

Know someone who has connections to the club and they reckon we're about to offer a 1 year extension to Taberner.

Clueless if so.
Wonder if someone has shown interest (North et al.) and this is just to say he's valued, cough up a fourth rounder.

He was in touch with WAFL clubs earlier in the year.

May also be that Voss, despite agreeing to a 2 year deal (not announced) has had his turned.

Also, RE: Occams Razor.

Yeah, Warner makes the most sense. it's obvious.

But here's an example where the theory breaks down.

I ask you what animal this wool comes from, the obvious answer is 'sheep'

What I fail to inform you is that we're standing in Peru.

And so I posit, in lieu of valuable information, the answer is Bont or DeGoey.

;)

Voss is still fine from what I've heard, I think they want Taberner down at Peel Thunder more than anything.

Likely spells the end for Sebit then :(

Alright I can't keep doing this I'm joking.

Taberner isn't getting a new deal, I just wanted some activity in the thread.
