Opinion 2024 Round 1 Team

Nicks has only debuted six freshly drafted players in round 1 right?

McAsey in 2020
Rowe and Berry in 2021
Rachele and Soligo in 2022
Michalanney in 2023

Of those, McAsey was dropped after 4 games, Soligo after 2 games, and Berry debuted as a forward
Obviously it's been a rebuilding side so you would expect a lot of new players, but that's a reasonable record of round 1 debutants. Half of our first rounders in that period played their first game in round 1 (McAsey, Rachele and Michalanney), and Thilthorpe also played pretty early. The two who did not play early were Pedlar and Cook, and Pedlar had pretty significant fitness issues in his first couple of years so I don't think it was entirely voluntary.

This year we have three first rounders and none of them have played in the first 6 rounds. It's definitely a notable change.

The idiotic thing is, if he was actually blooding more young players people would be giving him a longer leesh.

He's nailed his mast to the wall of the senior players and they have let him down. He's signed his own resingation in some ways.

No they wouldn’t. Year 5 is still year 5

It’s time to deliver, there is no more leash (well, except in Kirky’s “basement”)

We traded up to get Curtin but you think that if he is fit and healthy Nicks wont have him in the side round 1 because he doesn't have enough credits. Even though the past 4 years he has given 6 rookies we drafted their first game in round 1.

You are still living with the ghosts of Neil Craig and he has been gone for 12 years.

Just going to ask this again.

And note that if you'd looked a little closer at selection philosophy, you'd had predicted this correctly too.

How's this gone for you?

Well obviously pretty s**t.

He has completely gone backwards on playing the rookies. Doesn't change what he did with our draft picks in his first 4 years.

I think he has gotten scared. A year he has to make the finals has made him ultra conservative.

Just going to ask this again.

Why are you asking again old man? I already answered.
Nicks had 4 opportunities between 2020 and 2023 to give new draftees games in RD 1 and he gave 6 players a debut - McAsey, Soligo, Rachel, Max, Rowe, Berry.

6 brand new draftees being given games in round 1 is an indication he favored giving young draftees games early on. There is nothing to debate here.

Nicks literally gave our top draftee from the 2022 draft 22 games last year.

The fish jumps into the boat sometimes

Eg Max last season. There's a vacancy in the team in his preferred position, no senior player to shift out, the player's performance belies the usual inconsistency of a rookie, we're not under any real pressure to win games because few are expecting finals.

That's the easy bit.

What if there's not a vacancy? What if it would involve dropping / shifting a more senior player? What if the rookie's performances are a bit inconsistent? What if there is pressure on to win now?

The level of difficulty goes up a bit. Coaches with strong resolves and clubs with strong development systems don't bat an eyelid but if you don't have those things...?

Our list management has been bold and we've ended up with a young squad overall but haven't quite followed through with selection or coaching decisions imho.

💯, if Luke Brown hadn’t retired and was still hobbling around thinking he was fit to play every week, would Max have played a game yet???

Well - if you look at Nicks's history - you would have to suggest yes.

Until this year - Nicks was very quick to get newly drafted players into the team.

Once more -

2020 - Nicks played McAsey the first 10 games.
2021 - Berry played the first 5 games and 17 games in 2021. Rowe played the first 18 games and ended with 19 out of 22. Tilthorpe had his debut in week 6 and played 14 of the last 17 games.
2022 - Both Soligo and Rachele debuted RD 1 and played significant games.
2023 - Max debuts rd 1 and plays all season.

This year is different to Nick's first four years.

For me - it feels like he is running scared in 2024. Expectations are finals.

Which senior player was playing 2s when those kids were selected? You're deliberately ignoring a key component of the discussion.
