Opinion 2024 Round 1 Team

I'm somewhat consoled by the fact that if Burgess doesn't perform, we can give Gollant (who's shown a bit) some games instead. Selection pressure is almost always a good thing.

Rory Sloane trials protective goggles at training, Chris Burgess firms for Crows debut

Rory Sloane continues to ramp up his return to training, using protective goggles to do so. Plus Adelaide look set to name a fresh face in Crows colours in round 1.

Adelaide veteran Rory Sloane has begun to trial wearing protective glasses and goggles to return to contact training following his eye surgery.
The former captain had his second detached retina surgery earlier this year after experiencing the sixth eye issue of his career.

After surgery Sloane said he would “probably look into” getting goggles at some point.

At Crows training on Friday Sloane was trialling a couple of pairs of eyewear as he ramped up his return to training.

He did some drills before going with other players on the sidelines such as Luke Nankervis and Harry Schoenberg when the Crows began match simulation.

Fellow Crows veteran and former captain Taylor Walker was not on the track after he suffered a back spasm.

The Crows talisman is expected to return to training on Monday ahead of Adelaide’s Round 1 clash against Gold Coast next week.

Former Suns utility Chris Burgess is firming to make his debut for the Crows against his former side in the wake of young gun Riley Thilthorpe’s 12 to 14 week meniscus injury.

With Walker out, the Crows had a forward line of Darcy Fogarty, Lachie Gollant and Burgess during match sim.

But Burgess was thrown into the ruck at times in a key sign that he is the man to replace Thilthorpe given his ability to provide support to Reilly O’Brien.

After a strong pre-season game against West Coast, Sam Berry started at half-forward as he pushes his case for Round 1.

Key defender Mark Keane took part in match simulation as he continues his return from a concussion sustained in the trial game against Port Adelaide.

Well based on that…
Burgess for RT
Keane for Borlase
Berry starts over Sholl in round one, Sholl as sub

Unless Soligo isn’t at full fitness, then he’s starting round one on the ground.

Burgess pickup looking pretty good .
2+ goals in Rd 1 .

This is the beauty of our forward line. It bats deep. The prime defender goes to Tex, Second big goes to Fogarty, two mid/small size go to Rachele and Rankine which really leaves part time defenders on a guy like Burgess and another small / mid forward. Combine that with zone defence and a tendency to double team the contest with Tex means a player like Burgess is ripe to hurt the opposition. Teams will be reluctant to put a hard defence on him at the risk of releasing Tex and Fog who will certainly hurt them.

Burgess also wont be the target to long inside 50s like Thilthorpe which attracts multiple defenders to the contest.

Bono might be an appropriate new nick name for Rory.

Your expectations of Burgess are way overblown.

Anyone know anything about back spasms? Is it a random kind of event or is it something that occurs if there's ongoing underlying tightness/weakness/issues? Tex didn't look to be moving as freely as he was last year in the quarter and a bit I watched of the Eagles trial.
Yeah not great , especially at his age

Normally a bit of instability pelvis , Lower back etc likely from fatigue and maybe a movement or landing

Lots of core work , little bit of rest from bending twisting etc

Will be interesting

Are there indications that Burgess has what it takes to make it at AFL level?

I always remember us drafting a super full forward who kicked hundreds of goals per year for SANFL Port, and when he started playing games for us, a certain boundary rider by the name of Kerley said that he couldn't see a single redeeming feature in his game. Didn't last long.

So, 124.55 in the VFL..... does it mean much?

Great question.

I don't rate the secondary leagues at all, but he has clearly been dominant and too good for the VFL these past two years.

He is a mature body and he is surrounded by a bloody good forward line with goal scoring taken care of between Walker, FOG, Rankine, Rachele and Peds.

Where it gets tricky is if we lose one of Walker, FOG, Rankine, Rachele - then the forward mix is off balance - especially if we persists with Murphy.

I’m backing him to do pretty well in our system with Fog and Tex getting the main defenders

Also our ball movement of last year was very good for forwards so if we maintain that he can definitely have some decent impact , maybe even career best impact

Well, if there is a system, it's ours. After all, we just need a guy willing to throw his weight around and crash packs.

Yeah missed the Port bit but Hodges was another 1 dimensional forward also.
Hodges was a gun. Fast leading strong marking, long kicking. Could take a mark on top of pack to like Modra. Injuries hit him at wrong time unfortunately. 94-96 kicked 100 each year. So no injuries then. 1992 kicked 48 with a lot of games injured.

Time to give it away Rory

Looking increasingly likely that the Rd 1 lineup will be…

B: Michalanney - Butts - Worrell
HB: Milera - Keane - Hinge
C: Soligo - Crouch - Rankine
HF: Rachele - Walker - Keays
F: Murphy - Fogarty - Burgess
R: O’Brien - Dawson - Laird
Int: Smith - Sholl - Pedlar - Jones
Sub: one of Berry or McHenry
Emg (from): Berry, McHenry, Nankervis, Borlase, Curtin, Hamill, Cook, Gollant

The only one I could see sneaking into the Rd 1 22 who I don’t have in there is Berry, which would relegate one of Sholl, Pedlar or Jones to sub. Everyone else seems locked in.

With the surface likely to be a bit greasy in a night game on the Gold Coast, I think Berry should be and probably will be in the starting 22 for his contested work and tackling. Barring injury I think we have the 23. Who will be the sub is somewhat intriguing.

Gold Coast won’t be pushovers based on yesterday’s performance. Need to not get annihilated at centre clearances by Witts/Rowell/Anderson.
I think us having the week to observe them and then plan will help us be prepared. We will not be taken by surprise or ambushed. We know what we are up against, that it is a challenge, and will take nothing for granted. I am sure plenty of thinking and planning is taking place.

Your midfield is light on. Berry will be in the team imo. I wouldn't have Sholl anywhere near the team but if he does play Nicks will possibly do something dumb like playing Sholl over Pedlar. Jones would be a better option to leave out if he must play Sholl. GC are very contested so playing Sholl against then would be a mistake imo. .

Well we are in trouble then as thats our best midfield. The only changes are Rankine to the forward line. Murphy to bench. Sholl to wing. Midfield of Laird, Dawson, Rankine, Rachele, Pedler, Crouch, Berry. Thats 7 players that can run through there.
