Opinion 2024 Round 1 Team

If Sloane is smart he'll realise that these little injury setbacks will have him off the pace early. He's not the soldier he once was.

Best to hold himself back a bit. Play some SANFL games early in the season. Swallow his pride.

Run himself into some form and fitness.

Then once the AFL team hits a speed bump or picks up an injury or two he's there. Maybe a sub appearance or two to begin. Gee... Sloaney was pretty good when he came on. Experienced head.

Eases back into the 22.

Rather than bust a boiler trying to be there for Round 1. He'll either get injured again or play when he shouldn't. Perform badly, get shuffled through a few different roles, eventually out of the team not to return.

Unfortunately I don't think he is smart in regards to his own career. I also don't think we're shrewd at managing players (or convincing them that they need managing) or prepared to make a tough but correct selection call on a senior.

Would love to see young Ryan get a round 1 debut and never look back. He’s exactly what our backline needs. Dare and dash. Along with Keene, Hinge, Smith and Milera, we will be quite dynamic across half back and on the wings.

Unpopular opinion is that Jones needs to go to another level to survive what’s coming. Even when Smith falls off.

There’s no chance that’s the way Sloane would be thinking

Based on preseason to date:

Max Butts Curtin
Milera Worrell Hinge
Jones Dawson Smith
Pedlar Tex Keays
Rach Fog Rankine

ROB Crouch Laird

Nank Cook Soligo Thilthorpe
Sub Sloane if we have to play him at all

Other options are Keane to CHB and Worrell replaces Curtin
Curtin replaces Nank or Cook

the last one is what he'll rely on. Getting into the early 22 requires no form line, just needs to put his hand up and say he's right to go. Once in, he will be confident that we won't make the required selection call on a senior. The way we went about resting him as sub last year is testament to that.

By my rough count we have 17 players between 50 and 100 games currently, so in two years we should have one of the highest counts of 100+game players. Obs we'll lose some of the current 8 and obs all 17 wont get two full seasons of games but we'll have a large group all coming through together.

Almost like we have done a complete rebuild that’s finally coming toward an end. 2025 is our year to really challenge for the flag but would be great for us to be one of the rare teams that get one earlier than expected (Bombers 93, hawks 2008)

I don't see Butts being best 22 but don't know who can replace him.

be surprised if he's not first KPD selected for round 1. Gut feel is that playing injured flattened his progression and he is favoured ahead of all but Murray going into this season. I'm ignoring Curtin as I doubt they have him as a KPD in his debut year unless injuries mount.

He has regressed but see him being picked Round 1 at full back.

How do you reckon our backline would go if they came up against our forward line? Who would lineup on who?

Yet his kicking efficiency compared to other KPD's is quite comparable..in fact more than favourable.

His disposal efficiency is more than fine, if a little safe at times.

His issue last year was getting enough of the ball and stopping his opposing player from getting too much of the ball. Hopefully that was injury impacted and he can bounce back to his previous trajectory.

Otherwise, if Worrell and Keane can add some more defensive aspects to their game, Butts will be in trouble once Murray is back.

Butts has massive issues with disposal, intensity and urgency at times. I've seen him make absolute howlers in multiple games and in my opinion he just isn't at the level required by someone in that position.

I think Butts days as a walk up starter are numbered.

But he will be a walk up starter in Rd1.

The selection committee will have a minimum level of “experience” they require.

But by the end of the season Butts could well be in the SANFL if others live up to expectation.

Definitely with intensity and urgency.

His disposal is a bit more complicated. A disposal efficiency of 85.7% isn’t bad at all. 1.6 clangers in absolute terms isn’t bad either, but not when it makes up nearly 20% of his 8.4 disposals. This indicates that he is either hitting a target or missing completely, and sometimes doesn't even get a disposal away for his clanger.

In comparison, Murray averages 1.1 clangers (11% of 9.8 disposals), Steven May 2.4 (14% of 17.2) and Darcy Moore 2.7 (17% of 15.6). They just all do more of the other stuff.
