I agree unless we finish bottom 4 its not going to make a lot of difference this year. Id add Sam Cummings to your list I think if he slides that far we grab him or the idea of taking Mini Pou is growing also.

But what a farce the AFL draft has become, 1 of the top 5 AGAIN linked to Brisbane and another 2 are linked to GCS. 8 of the top 25 draftees are linked to clubs via academies or FS (3 x GCS). What hope do rebuilding clubs have?

Clubs Brisbane, Collingwood, Sydney, GCS, Carlton and Essendon all have top #25 rated kids.

I am going to be slightly biased towards SA talent as I get to see them every week, but Sam Cumming is looking like a real good prospect in this year's draft - I wouldn't be upset if we picked him up. I got to watch Sam play his second league game for North last weekend due to my involvement with South Adelaide, and he was clearly his side's best player. In a team full of former AFL-listed players, he racked up 21 disposals, five marks, five tackles, five clearances, and three goals in a loss. He is a good size, uses the ball well by hand and foot and fits a positional needed as a midfielder who can hit the scoreboard. Sam also won the U18 SANFL MVP in his underage year against some handy players who are now on AFL lists.

I feel like even this is being a bit optimistic about where our pick lands. I did a ladder predictor and with us winning 3 of our last 5, which seems the most likely scenario to me, we end up 11th and get pick 7 before any FA compo. If TDK and Allen get band 1 compo for their respective clubs, we're already back to pick 9 and if the 4 bids in the scenario in the post above occur then we're at pick 13.
Am I missing anything?

Nitpicking but there is no way Carlton could match a F/S bid at 7 and still keep their FA compensation pick where it is currently. But these pieces rarely go so far to consider the opposite end of the spectrum - the amount that clubs will now have to give up to match these bids.

GC is also an interesting case. Right now they have 3 firsts (8, 11, 18) and a 2nd (29)... but after FA compo these would only be enough points to match bids at 4 and 5. They would need to muster up another pick 13 or equivalent in points to match bids if they came in at 1 and 4. They can also forget about Coulson/Addinsall etc if they get bids before the 3rd round. Good luck with Curnow too - if they want him they either need to let one of Uwland/Patterson go, or move some quality players on (eg B King, Walter..). I don't see them trading futures

This all requires WC/Tigers to have the chutzpah to bid on these guys of course. The drop off is much steeper now so every passing pick makes it easier for GC. We aren't exempt from this either, last year we took Trav before bidding on Lombard which was rather kind given our stance on academies...

All the above is obviously not ideal for us, but it's not all doom and gloom as these "worst case" articles would try to have us think. The new DVI is going to make it a lot harder and fairer. The price for matching academy/FS bids has largely been fixed... the potential Allen/TDK/Draper first round compensation being in front of us is a much bigger issue IMO

That is not the worse case scenario.

Saints will not finish below Essendon.


Worse case scenario would be us finishing about both Dees, Blues and even Port.

Us finishing above the Dess is quite likely. Especially if Saints defeat them this weekend.

The Current AFL ladder predictor is below and but is based on Dees beating St Kilda.

Beats the Dees and we could also go above Port. Though we could drop another game and not draw level with them.

And with Carlton yes they should beat the Dons in their last game, but I would not be surprised if the find a way to lose.

Importantly, and sadly, Port after their thrashing today now have a % worse than ours. So if we tie on points at seasons end we will go above them.

Of their remaining games, the Blues game is the only game where they might win.
The others are against the Cats, Freo and Suns...all terms who will be keen lock in their highest possible ladder spot for the finals.

Close to fate certain the TDK compo pick is immediately ahead of ours. Has that happened before? MiniPou to the Blues??

We could give them a nice touch up and then present TDK with his Saints jumper on the ground post match.

Just did the ladder predictor and us finishing 11th isn't beyond the realms of possibility. To make matters worse, WC and Carlton will probably get Band 1, with the slimmest chance that Draper gets Dons one (surely not).

That's pick 10, with Annable, Uwland, Patterson, maybe Dean and King taken before our pick... we're looking at pick 13 or worse - that's rough after the year we've endured. That's why mid table is no man's land...

I'm still on Jevan, and there are names anywhere between pick 5 and 20 that could be decent. There's no sure thing this year apart from the 3 early academy boys - its time for Dalrymple to earn his pay check.
