If essendon bid then we bid on theirs going forward. A bit of good will goes a long way. Fine if someone bids later in the 1st round to keep us honest. But not a very early bid.

I'd be fine with an Essendon bid, so long as it comes after the other 3 Academy boys are bid on. That'd put the bid at 9 which would be a good outcome for Dean.

Go have a look at the drafts from 2016-2019...

How many of those players still on the list?

There's your answer to why people say his drafting screwed us.
Not the first, probably won't be the last.

We are crippled by the fact that we are 'Carlton' and we don't take a backward step (accept for 2025). It actually has the opposite effect as intended. Mind you, I'm only theorising, but how often can we honestly say that we've been optimistic about the influx of talent we've brought in through the draft, in a way that will mean quality players will peak at the same time? You just have to read the write-ups for each club after draft night each year to see that our approach most years is strictly utilitarian. We draft three or four draftees each year with descriptions like 'reads the play well' and 'played well against...' hardly inspiring stuff.

I can honesty say that I've been truly optimistic only three years out of our entire draft history as I remember it, one was too good to be true (so it proved), one was us making the most of draft penalties, and the other was us finally admitting that we needed to rebuild. You can guess which years they are, and hardly recruiting for sustained success.

So then the question would be, do we still go ahead with those trades suggested in the HUN, or do we match the bid and secure another late 1st/early 2nd?

I think the highest a bid will come is Melb 2nd pick which is likely to be pick 12. The clubs before having bigger priorities and wont want to be seen reaching for a father son prospect, they are never a chance of landing; they want the good will of the player and the fans to be able to say 'we got our man'.. and not that 'oh we only got you because Dean was unavailable' If clubs are wanting to make a team pay, they will make sure its with Brisbane & GCS before us. The only reason I could see a bid coming early is if a club wanted to push back our 2nd pick far back enough so they could get in front of us for Dovaston, but that looks unlikely.

It stuns me that Austin has been in the Chair for 6 draft/trade periods and we are going through a 2 season rebuild including a huge clean out of players he brought in, and yet we still blame SOS for the poor list. I think Austin is a passable recruiter but a failed list management. Things changed when Austin was managed by Graeme Wright

So in this scenario what happens to our pick 11? What does that become?

Bid at pick 9 = 1220 points required.

Our pick 9 + 11 become 12 + 14 because of the other 3 bids.

pick 12 -> 1140 points
pick 14 -> 1024 points

We use these 2 picks to match the bid at pick 9.

Leaves us with 944 points, so our pick 14 gets pushed back to pick 16.

Yep Austin got off lightly i think. Maybe we are keeping him for this draft period and then we make a change?

But I dont think Austin did the contracts, that would have been lloyd right?

I just think Austin is your average list manager. Not good, not bad; like the majority of them are.
What I will say is that he, along with SOS done what many here have suggested and tried to find small forwards and tall defenders cheap.

I think this all depends on what Voss instructions are, up until now we have all been 'about the contest', speed, outside run and skills were not as important as 'winning the contest' This was seen as our strength and our path to success, if Austin built a list based on this then its hard to now blame him when it became obvious we needed to pivot

I don't want to be too brash, but I don't really want to trade up, because I don't have a guy that I really want before Dean.

CDT looks good but is a 5 year development prospect. Robey looks exciting, but I sense the bust potential. Sharp doesn't fit our mid mix. X Taylor is another who is the wrong list fit. None of the key forwards should be taken that high.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Trade out to next draft with enough to match Dean, Ison is the best option IMO
it's not the draft to be trading up, it's next year

that's because Wright is on the list management committee, watching first hand how Austin operates and identifies talent

So in one trade window we lose TDK, Curnow and Silvagni.

We get decent picks in for each of those players.

And the sum of what we are going to bring in via the draft is two players that were tied to us anyway.

Pretty shit result tbh.

OK, i love a list so....with some time on my hands this week i've come up with my Top 20 Phantom. It will be right, you all know it will be right:p

But i have put a bit of thought into it, and considered a whole lot of other trades, points and intracacies etc. For us at Carlton i would prefer to get into next years draft, but can't quite see a way. And i acknowledge our mooted WC and Adelaide trades are a possibility. But this is what i came up with myself. Hopefully others can have a crack at their own. Hey, it's better than talking about the past:

TRADES

Melb trade 7&GC F1 to Rich for 3

Carl trade 9&11 to Ess for 6,21&27

Melb trade 8 to WC for 13&F2

1. WC: Willem Dursmaa
2. GC: Zeke Uwland
3. WC: Cooper Duff-Tytler
4. Mel: Sullivan Robey
5. GC: Dylan Patterson
6. Bris: Dan Annable
7. Rich: Xavier Taylor
8. Ess: Dyson Sharp
9. Car: Sam Cumming or Aiden Schubert
10. Rich: Sam Grlj
11. Car: Harry Dean
12. WC: Jacob Farrow
13. Ess: Aiden Schubert or Cumming
14. Haw: Mitch Marsh
15. Ess: Josh Lindsay
16. GWS: Osker Taylor
17. Mel: Lattrelle Pickett
18. WB: Blake Thredgold
19. Ade: Harley Barker
20. Gee: Lachie Dovaston

I had ESS desperately trying to trade up to 2 but WC holding firm for the Big 2.

I see numerous clubs like Hawthorn, Bullies, Carlton, Geelong, Freo trying to trade into 2026 F1's but can't see it happening. Maybe Adel trade their F1 to Hawthorn to try get 2 of this years SA crop, but i dunno from both sides pov. So thats where i left it.

No way Dean lasts that long. Cal Twomey has been clear on Gettable that Essendon's pick is as late as he is going to go.
