VFL form is not an indication of AFL readiness. Have seen so many dominate at VFL and struggle at AFL.
From the moment I saw Dodson at preseason you could tell he was a footballer, with tremendous skill, poise, and footy IQ. Quite simply an absolute steal at 52.
It's his first of a two year contract as a draftee, normally they extend in their second.
I would suggest you don't worry too much in 2025. Come bye time 2026 and he hadn't extended, maybe get concerned then. This panicked is a tad premature in my view.
Hang on a minute, mate.

Are you trying to tell me that Ben Paton isn't a gun? But he has had 30 possessions four times this season and 20-plus a further seven times.

Also, Jacob Koschitzke is a weapon. Few weeks back against, kicked 4 goals, had 26 possessions, 8 clearances, 25 hitouts?

Looks way better than TDK.

You're a liar - guns everywhere in the VFL.

This is such hyperbole.

Most AFL players are thinking to themselves "of course De Koning's going to St Kilda- how could he turn that down?"

Carlton has an average coach and few good young players. If you can almost double your salary somewhere else, why not?

It's hardly a game changer for St Kilda.

Nothing changes. St Kilda will only be a destination club when currently - or imminently- in flag contention. We aren't like Collingwood where we have other selling points.

If you think Tom De Koning changes that more than a tiny fraction, you're delusional sorry mate.
Of course it’s a game changer.
Yes, Tdk most likely is coming for the bucks.
Nevertheless, he improves the team. We do better. Suddenly players come because we’re a team on the rise and a much more attractive proposition
We have to start somewhere.
And as noted many times previously, the small team we are, we have to pay big to tempt players. For now.

Or we just take the rational, conservative approach that has been proven a multitude of times in sports with more free agency than AFL. Not to mention AFL itself.

That is, spend your money wisely.

Focus on developing and retaining those you have.

I can't think of any sporting examples where teams bring in someone who isn't already a superstar, make them the highest paid player in the league, and go on to have huge success.

Except maybe Tom Boyd at the Bulldogs.

Remember when the threads had consistent titles and effort went into posting them at 12:01am on game day?

I remember, it was up until the start of the year when the post scheduler was removed. It was so easy to plan days or weeks ahead. Now it's just a matter of 'someone will post when they can'

Problem is with the money we spend on a ruck making him the second highest paid in AFL history will we have the ability to retain and attract when we dont have the cap

Where does this leave Keeler?

I thought he showed real potential in both forward and defence. 21 years old, right in the steep improvement window.

Ruck he lacked strength and craft, but that could be developed.

Everyone keeps raving about Dodson's potential. He had 35 hit-outs and 3 goals in a VFL game recently, and he just turned 19.

My worry is in 2 or 3 years time, we'll have Moneybags De Koning and King taking up all the coin. And Dodson and Keeler will leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Because we won't have the cap space to pay another quality tall.

Meanwhile, David King calls this "crazy" in light of potential throw-in rule change:
So many exaggerations & embellishments that I don’t know where to start.

If De Koning dominates and Saints go into flag contention (which would require many other things going right!), that'll help attract players of course. But it'll have nothing to do with the mere fact "we pulled a free agent".
Haven't you got some pearls to go and clutch?

Don’t care which gimp is running it, just some standards would be nice. You retired yet? Put your hand up 😘
If I was mod it would be a very quiet forum after most of you kents got perma's just for shitting me 🤣🤣🤣

All the point is that we have a very promising ruck who could be A grade
Why bring in another ruck who we are making the second highest player in the league when we have other areas of concern.
If we get this decision wrong the re ifications could be absolutely disastrous
We did lack tall marking talent this year and Doogs - way back - was loathe to pinch hit as a forward. I don’t think they seriously rate Heath TBH.
