Who knows if Aleer even gets a game but there’s no doubt we need some key defender support. I think Caminiti ends up forward long term but at least if he needs to go there short term we’ve got some other options instead of being so Howard reliant.

One thing we don’t have is a long term 200cm defender which I think we’re going to need coming up against Sam Darcy, Thilthorpe, Ben King etc. That needs to be on the shopping list.

Perhaps the issue isn't the number of B grade players available to draft? The issue lies with the number of good coaches and well set up programs that can create players reaching B grade? The soft cap for coaching may well be more detrimental for developing clubs than given much thought about.

I dont think its just drafting that our young players seem to be developing at a really good rate. Development is so important. Nas, with bad development would have been stifled.

Disagree, Steele and Macrae are both AA, Hill still runs harder than anyone in the team, Wood is the only one probably as depth.
If we replace all four we are in a bloody good spot.

Don't think you can play Macrae and Steele in the same team. It won't work in today's footy, inside bulls are going out and transition mids are coming in and we have a few those coming through. With the likelihood of the last touch rule coming in, that'll make them even less relevant. I think Ross knows this hence Macrae starting as the sub yesterday. I think Steele is the better player if all things are equal. But wouldn't be surprised if both are playing VFL at different stages next year.

Wilkie and Camma play one on one (althought Wilkie does it all) then Tauru and Aleer to float in the defensive system.

Probably leaves Barrat the odd man out, unless he has a big pre season.

Definitely looked like he was on Sharman for the most part of it. Started next to him at the first centre bounce and was with him more than anyone else when the ball went forward.

Either way, I don't think you are giving near enough credit to Caminiti, who kept Cadman to 6 touches and 0 score.

Cadman has been in very good form over the last 6 weeks, averaging 3 goals a game.

100% needs work.

But that’s technical craft. Not capability.

No idea for example why he was going shoulder to shoulder with Sharman, when both of their weapons are their leaps.

But that’s a fixable.

Everyone is plastered to the last quarter of the Melbourne game for obvious reasons. However, you should also go back to the start of the first quarter where Hammer was started forward and looked like he could have a big day out when he kicked the first goal of the game after an infringement free kick. He is a HUGE unit and is still only a kid. Unfortunately because the young backline started leaking like a sieve, Hammer had to be moved back for the majority of the game.

Absolutely love the many positives shown by our young core. While one result isn’t a reliable indicator, I can’t help to be optimistic going into next season if the off-season seemingly goes as planned.

Hopefully the brilliant end to the year from Wilson will hold him in good stead for next season. There were several instances where he put his body on the line and showcased the confidence he displayed at VFL level. Happy for him.

Keeler showed some real promise yesterday. He is yet to have a full four-quarter performance, but there are several moments that just make you go wow. Continue to build his strength and confidence and he could bloom big time.

Sharman, Windhager and Hall have become consistent performers, while Garcia, Boxshall, Trav, Tauru and Collard had small moments against a team that were desperate to win. They will close the gap with each preseason, but give them time.

Finally, if we can get an injury-free preseason into Pou and King, then there is plenty to be excited about for next year. For many of us, we can actually see our senior core not being integral to our wins.

I am not going to go ahead an book finals plans for next year, but I can see a world where we can give it a push if we get off to a good start. Keen to see what next season brings.

Not suggesting you slagged him but you did say you though Aleer was better. I disagree, thought Hammer was very good on Cadman. Completely nullified his impact for the match.

That was Aleers best game for some time which says a lot about how he's tracked this season.

I haven't seen too much praise for him this year, which on the plus side should mean his value has dropped dramatically.

Friend of mine saw all the boys at the Brighton hotel function space last night at about 10pm, said that Enright gave a passionate speech about how next year we will make a massive push for top 6… this friend is very honest and he also hates Saints so I doubt he’d make this up

As a pure defender, which is just as much as turning defence into attack as it is to just pure stopping. Yeah, I think Aleer is the better defensive prospect.

Take nothing away from Caminiti. I think what he has done has been heroic down there this year.

But if the worst is that we agree they are a much of a muchness. Then that makes us better doesn’t it?

Either way the side gets better. My point was ultimately we pat on the back Caminitis improvement down back, we should infact expect development from Aleer (hopefully it starts with his body work 1:1)
