2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I thought he spoke like he was still coming to following a lobotomy.

Guy seemed like he was either a total idiot or being forced to speak to Twomey at gun point.

I don't know much about Gubby, I believe he's pretty highly rated, so I'm hoping he just phoned that in as it is nothing but a bothersome distraction during his busiest time of the year.

But yeah, he didn't come out of that little chat looking like someone who you'd want making any big decisions for you.
It's not mutually exclusive to be very good at your job and very uncomfortable in front of a camera......

We record videos at trade events that get used on LinkedIn, and I can tell you, something as trivial as that is enough to put some people off, and immediately they become hyper conscious of every movement and sound they make. Imagine doing that in a scenario that has potential to end up on national TV.....some people simply aren't comfortable with it, the same as public speaking.

Ben Long?

There was an ex saint keen to return wasn’t there?
Just on Ben Long, does anyone remember that year where Ben Long was first moved to the back flank during the pre-season and there was so much hype that he was going to be AA level. Like even the club was using him in all the promotional material.

Then that's even more reason for us to say - if you want Petracca that bad, then stump up a premium to satisfy us "quick" so you can focus on that deal

So no, they do not have all the power because if they hold Flanders, then they miss one of Petracca/Uwland/Patterson

Yeah I think that’s very wishful thinking. It’s probably an overpay for pick 7 straight up, but hopefully we do end up getting something back for it.

100%, I certainly wouldn't call for the guys head after that or anything.

I've seen some of my recorded presentations for work and I sound like the most boring, monotonous drone you've ever heard.

I was more just disagreeing with the idea that he spoke well when he really, really didn't IMO.

We are demanding Geelong pay overs for a contacted Marshall but we wonder why we are paying overs for a contracted Flanders in a compromised draft?

Can’t have it both ways.

Same principle.

The golden rule for trading a contracted player who is required. The owning club receives overs and the bidding club pays overs.

It will happen for Marshall as it will for Flanders.

I get the feeling we're mending some bridges with GCS, over historical things like "see you in 2 years Bing" and more recently "Nepo Babies".......

We seem to do business at trade time best with teams that don't play games and simply get things done without having to "win" trades like Dildoro always used to have to do.

We are clearly not the best team in the AFL all of a sudden. But I would argue our list may possibly be one of the hardest for a depth player to break into next year.

If I was someone like Butler or even Clark, my manager would definitely be on the phone to other clubs.

Thank you very much for putting in the effort to fully prove my point! Much appreciated.

And this draft if shizenhousen from all reports, just as good a chance of landing a gun at 50. In addition, Flanders has proven his ability against the games elite. It is a no-brainer
Reality is, if we were getting Flanders like output from Hunter Clark or anyone else picked in a similar range, we’d be rapt.

We can all dream about what pick 7 might become but Flanders is a known quantity with a hell of a lot of desirable qualities and still has plenty of upside.

If we get anything back the other way, I think it’s a win for SOS

Gold Coast need that pick 7 for their Petracca plans however which is why they're happy to move Flanders on.

Whatever we can get from Geelong is likely what we use at the draft, unless something crazy no one has heard of yet drops, so there's far less incentive for us to just move him on.
I believe Ross will be very comfortable playing both TDK and Marshall in the same side and we will not be in a rush to offload him.

The more I think about it the more I realise we absolutely have had Flanders wrapped up since mid year. The trade with Suns has probably been discussed since then.

We may well get looked after if Butler and Heath are involved in a three way trade.

The fact that Suns have got their nose out of joint over Humphrey but are happy to do an early trade for Flanders means we must be doing something right.

Also its no doubt a negotiation tactic with Marshall and maybe Steele in mind.

I picked him in my Supercoach as one of my only mid-pricers that season.

Worst call ever :tearsofjoy:

I'm the first to admit I'm not a great judge, don't have the best grasp of other teams lists etc.

But I dont get it with Aleer. He has looked really good when I've seen him play.

I am more excited about getting him than Silvagni or Ryan.

From the games I've seen, talk of him being a DFA seems absolutely crazy.
I’m not trying to be rude but you can’t have seen much of him.

I’ll give him 1 very good game against Geelong, a few where he was ok and quite a few where he was just not afl standard. It remains a mystery why we want him and how we intend to use him.

All I can say is Lyon has a history of finding players who seem out if their depth but become important role players under him, let’s hope Aleer is the next one.

He had all the tools but apart from his final game for us he never really put it all together.

So you just put it through first 2-3 days of trade period? Why do you think so many deals get done on deadline day?
Pick 7 is a fair price for Flanders under contract. The thing with a deal is that both sides need to be happy, otherwise Gold Coast can just say we are holding Flanders to his contract. You always got to pay overs to get an elite contracted player.
