2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Mackie is used to playing paper, scissors, rock with the Dogs' team from last year with Bailey Smith. Now he is playing 4D chess with Gubby "The Dude" Allan and SOS.

Just my opinion but I think Curnow will go to the Swans for Haywood and picks. Marshall will go to the Cats for picks. The Cats need a ruckman more than a forward. Opposite for the Swans. We'll use the Marshall picks for whatever other trades we have in store or take them to the draft.
Personally I'd prefer Steele to stay if he wants to. I think we owe him that much. I just hope he doesn't end up at Essendon of all clubs.
Roma is a different case. Obviously he doesn't want to play second fiddle to TDK. And he'll be no.1 ruck at the Cats with almost guaranteed finals next year and possibly a GF. No one should begrudge him that choice.
Sounds like the Flanders trade is as good as done with the Suns expecting it to be finalized before the weeks out.
We've been mediocre for too long. It's going to be sad to see some of our stalwarts playing elsewhere but we know the ceiling on a lot of our older players and clearly the days of inaction are over.
That's a good thing which I support.

Hey, filling the talll tall back would be ace. But then have 80 key/key-ish backs. Maybe Viking will be thrown into even it up?

Just kidding.

St Kilda has “plenty of money to splash” and hasn’t finished “fishing” following an extraordinary cash splurge of more than $4.5m spent on five players so far this off-season.

But Saints head of talent and acquisition Graeme Allan said the club was still in the market for players this trade period,

And he warned rival clubs that St Kilda would “go hunting again” next year.

St Kilda has already locked away free agents Tom De Koning and Jack Silvagni and will bring in three more players Sam Flanders, Liam Ryan and Leek Aleer during this trade period following one of the most aggressive players acquisition hauls in modern football.

Asked if the club could retain its homegrown talent in the coming years, given the spend on bringing players in, Allan said: “It won’t be a problem … we’ll go hunting again next year.”

“We are still going (this trade period). We have got plenty of money to splash.”

In an intriguing press conference before the trade period officially got underway, Allan also

● Expressed surprise that Flanders chose Moorabbin as his preferred destination, but believed the club’s pick seven would get a trade done.

● Maintained he had kept the club’s interest in Silvagni a secret from his father Stephen, who is the Saints’ list manager

● Said the club would speak to Geelong about Rowan Marshall’s request for a trade to the Cats, but wouldn’t be giving him away without the appropriate compensation.

● Believed superstar Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera’s decision to sign a two-year $2m contract to remain at the Saints had been a game-changer in the club’s ability to land key targets.

“I think with Nas signing really was important for us, without Nas signing, I am not sure if we would be here talking to you guys because we mightn’t have anything on the table,” he said.

Allan dismissed suggestions that the club would struggle to keep talent in the future, given its outlay on the new acquisitions.

“Not all of them (the new players) are on big money,” he said.

“Ross (Lyon) was playing under restrictions, he was coaching under restrictions this year.

“We battled to get to 95% (of the salary cap spend) right at the end, which we have to under league rules, so there was a lot of front-ending (with the new players’ contracts).”

He said of Silvagni choosing the Saints: “I didn’t tell his dad. We are great mates … he (Stephen) was shocked. Then it was Ross (Lyon) who came over the top and (when) Ross comes over the top, (you) get out of the way.”

Allan will speak with Geelong about Marshall in the coming days, but he said he would drive a tough bargain and “do what is best for the St Kilda Football Club.”

“We will talk to the Cats and see what they have to say.”

Allan said of Flanders: “We thought he might have gone to another club … we were really happy Sam picked us … he had some good offers.”

“I think it will be a straight swap (pick seven for Flanders).”

He said likely new captain Callum Wilkie hadn’t been promised the role as part of his decision to turn his back on an offer from Western Bulldogs.

“We have given no promises … I am not going to talk about extensions or contracts,” he said when asked about Wilkie, who met recently with the Dogs before deciding to remain a Saint.

“That’s out of my pay packet,” he added when asked if Wilkie would be the next skipper with Jack Steele told to explore his options, even though the current captain wants to stay.

“Jack is a great fellow, I have known Jack since he was 18 at the Giants,” he said.

“We will see what happens in the next few weeks. (I) haven’t spoken to any (clubs) yet (about Steele).”

“Ross (Lyon) was playing under restrictions, he was coaching under restrictions this year.

Curious what the context was here.

Was he referring to injuries or restrictions put in place by the selection committee? ie. player X in role A for the season

Fiorini and Ainsworth leaving at the same time? Literally the two most unremarkable players in AFL history.

I have literally always thought they have a heap of guns like Rowell, Anderson and Miller but then the most forgettable blokes like Ainsworth and Fiorini.

I wonder if they'll leave any more impact at their new clubs.

His interview with Twomey he said Ross was restricted with personnel and list holes.

If true with SDK,interesting how much we pay him .How’s that discussion around the Christmas table

Here’s a thought.

Maybe we agreed to pay TDK 1.7m (to get him without using draft picks) and the brothers have agreed some of Tom’s wage goes to Sam if he comes.

I'm not a fan of moving Tauru forward. Looks like a future elite defender to me. Amazing ability to get a spoil in from any position and only seems to be scratching the surface of how good of an intercept mark he's going to be.
I tend to think the same but he's also got the skill set to think about a move forward at some stage. Plenty of time up his sleeve regardless.

Careful having a negative opinion on Ainsworth on this forum lol
