2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Your hatred of the bulldogs always leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling Joff, keep it up
you know I dont really hate the Bulldogs at all, Whole family are Bulldogs fans, and they are great people. I go to lots of Bulldog AFLW games because my niece plays for them and I barrack like them like crazy wanting them to win.
The people at the games are salt of the earth football supporters. The Bulldog supporters on Bigfooty are muppets, but at the end of the day, it is only a bit of fun ribbing, which they do the same back.

Glad my unserious quip about them has stuck in their craw though ;)

Ryan is best 22.

He's a former AA player (A forward) who's been playing in one of the worst teams we've seen in recent times.

With a clean bill of health and a good supply he will go well.

He was AA 5 years ago when he was 24 years old. He's now 29 and his best goal tally since then is 24 in a season. Same age as Butler, who has basically the same scoreboard impact but applies more pressure yet he's considered to be cooked. Also the same age as Steele, who was AA twice and we've just shipped him out because he's cooked.

He's good for just over a goal per game when he's in form. He may well end up in the preferred 23 ahead of Butler and Collard, but there's no guarantee. We may prefer Butler's one goal per game along with better defensive pressure vs Ryan's one goal per game and better skills.

I'd say both, JSOS made him non-essential, if the price was acceptable, then we'd do it, as soon as GWS wanted more than we did to pay, we took the opportunity to exit the deal and potentially used the cash elsewhere
If we were willing to do it for an acceptable price, then why not hold out for a better deal or walk him to the PSD ? How did it take us until halfway through the trade period to realise a) we don't have the picks for him and b) he was surplus to requirements? That's what I mean by amateur.

If we have reneged when we signed Silvagni I don't think anyone would blame us. Again right end result but we've come out of it looking poorly.

My eyes are moist

Sad to see Steele go, but we've really turned the list over in recent times and handed the baton on.

It should be the Steeles, Dunstans, Acres, Billings', Greshams etc that are pushing us to finish top 4 and push deep into the finals now.

Failed generation, but hopefully this new generation have what it takes.

List of St Kilda players to be named (modern team) All-Australian and also captain St Kilda in a finals match:

Stewart Loewe, Nathan Burke, Lenny Hayes, Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Jack Steele.

The timing of our decision aligned with our decision not to trade Rowan, and given we were already "one over" in our incomings vs outgoings, we strategically decided we didn't have the appetite or list spots to get Aleer in on anything but on the cheap, on our terms.

I'm sure that if we were able to get him in, it would have resulted in a backflip on Marshall or a hard call on a Dow or Carroll delisting and re-rookie.

Ultimately, Steele was the unlucky last one out to balance our list movements this off-season, until all of Jones, Byrnes, and Schoenmaker are delisted in the next list lodgement(s) (subject to re-rookieing).

Gubby: yeah, well, uh….you know, we decided we were bloody stupid offering a contract that size to a kid who’s 24 and not so great really.

So yeah, ok , we did have a couple of dates, but you know, dunno, uh, what we were thinking - not like we put a ring on his finger.

Whaddabout the Cats, who uh, you know, left Roma standing at the altar?
In a way i hope what we did with Aleer is a bit of a turning point. As has been stated we could have dragged it out until the deadline and fronted the cameras to do a Mackie but we were upfront and (sort of) honest and gave him time to try and find another option.

Ultimately it was bad PR for a good outcome for everyone.

Yeh similar, my brother in law is a dogs man and i was with him in 16 and was overjoyed for him. We share alot of similarities as clubs but the Bevo die hards are insufferable, if you cant see the issues hes created in that club then i got nothing for you.

Ill always love Jack. Ive given him shit in recent years but that handsome bastard will always hold a place in my heart.

Also they keep calling him Rohan??????? That’s probably the worst part

If you want a laugh, head over to the Geelong trade thread. It’s just arrogant campaigners throwing shade at us for not accepting their “overs deal”. They’re clearly upset for missing Marshall but deflect by mentioning our lack of success, haven’t heard that one before!

Jeez I hope they stumble down the ladder in 2026
My favourite was the nuffy who said that the AFL needs to look into why we refused to trade.

They should, but for Geelong as they shouldn't have been going for breaches of contract so there has to be something shifty there, what with their financials...

I'm so bullish on what Marshall and De Koning can do together. Plonking Marshall at full forward is going to be a luxury. If the mids can get on top then Marshall, King and Sharman with Ryan, Higgins and whoever else gets in at their feet can be a really dangerous forward line.

We seem to have depth on every line now. Caminiti and Howard fighting it out. A bunch of kids like Box and Hugo that want to get in the team. Trav and Hastie should get better. Tauru. Pou.

So excited for 2026.
