Someone like Amon who is a genuine wing should be looked at but the AFL may choose one wing every few years if they have done a bunch of things beyond the role of a wing.

Gunston certainly is the best HFF in the game at the moment.

Probably the biggest issue is this artificial requirement to have played x number of games, with most of our top players having missed games.
Wingmen sadly won't get picked unless they're pretty much hybrid midfielders who also do exceptionally well in things like coaches votes - right up there on the leaderboard. Maybe if Dempsey went on to kick 40 goals like he was tracking to before dropping his scoring. Bailey is a bit of a smokey as a forward/wingman who has scored well and starred, but I imagine he'll be squad rather than best 22.

I think Gunston probably gets in unless he has a big drop of form/scoring to end the season.

Feel like selectors don’t look at goal assists as much, do Thilthorpe will probably need a big final month to get in
Ever since I've been recording the combined stat, the top 3 key forwards in it have been selected.

Serong should power home and in to the team.
3rd in AFLCA
Influence you say?
Freo are undefeated (10-0) when serong has 28+ disposals
He’s not stat padding taking kick ins or sheep dogging 1 2s
Picks up his 3rd AA, 3rd b and f at age 24 and a rising star award, underappreciated how well he has started his career.

I have Jacque Pistolstone in my team. Besides him, Hawthorn have had a stack of good players without quite being AA (first team) level. Do you have other nominations?
I think with Hawthorn we have had lots of players have elite patches at various points of the year. Day started the year on fire and we know what happened next, Amon was another that started elite. Weddle had a patch through the middle when he was settled into one role but like Daysy injury hit, Impey had an interrupted start but recent weeks has been a needle mover. Could probably keep going but think I made my point.

Probably a good thing in the end of we manage to get everyone in form at the same time for finals but not good for a stats driven award like AA.

Newcombe has had to carry a massive load this year which has impacted him at different points of the year but has been good overall might win the B&F but Im not sure he will get noticed for AA over some others.

Amon, Meek and Gunston probably the 3 that have been good all year and not injured. If they fit in the AA I'm not sure.

Gunston seems the most likely with the other 2 hopefully in the squad but wait and see.

The point is that Gunston could be the only Hawk considered unlucky if he missed out. No one else has been that close to the best 22 but a team can be successful with a whole stack of players performing to 7 or 8/10 most weeks.

I felt Holmes and Stengle were unlucky to miss out last year as some of the very best forward pockets and running half backs respectively in the league. Other years we've had 50/50 calls go our way (incoming BigFooty rage vomit and possible historical grievance essay coming in 3,2,1...).

Yeah I know, I'm just trying to point out we have had that AA level play through our team this year just through different individuals at different points of the year. Day at the start Weddle through the middle ect... We have been pretty unlucky with injury this year in hindsight but have managed to be able to cover it.

The backbone of the team this year has absolutely been through the spread, which is how you cover elite talent anyway.

Yeah Newc been good, issue is there are so many good mids.

Amon hasn’t played wing for a while. He’s a genuine HBF now.

Gunston definitely in the team.

Coincidence or do you think they check this thread ? 😉
Obviously check this thread*

*I also double checked the history of the previous 3 years before I started and they did it then. I recall a Richmond welcher getting very offended by myself and PhatBoy one year ITT about it.

Yeah I'm always perplexed when teams don't tag him. Collingwood probably would have won if they'd done so

Not sure how far back you've gone but this doesn't sound right.

Gunston finished 2nd in the comp for goals + assists in 2020 (despite missing a game and starting the year in defence) and wasn't selected. Had a great season, finished 3rd in the Coleman and won the B&F.

They picked 3 midfielders in the forward line, including Danger and Bont, neither of whom spent any time forward that year and both kicking just 11 goals for the season. The other forward they selected was Liam Ryan, who averaged 10 touches a game and kicked 25 goals for the season. Despite a low year for goalkicking in general, he was still not top 10 in the Coleman. Were some strange selection decisions that year.

Yep I remember that. I was in here weekly pushing his case back then. That one along with the Sicily snub in 22 still grind my gears.
