Yeah but none of those Hawthorn guys were being fought over and most came when they were down the bottom of the ladder like us.

The major difference is they had a clear list management strategy and drafted each player to fill a specific role. They wanted to build a gameplan around running and kicking so they recruited players who could have a role within it. We seem to have little or no strategy at all. One year we seem to suddenly discover that we don't have many talls, so we load up on tall DFA types. The next year it's small forwards. There is no clear direction or list management strategy connected to a game style, we are just collecting random players to plug holes. The football department is a complete mess.

They also had the luxury of not finishing bottom 2 for the last 6 years. Plus the link between Mitchell and WCE players.

North drafting pre Rawlings has really ****ed us, and since Rawlings has taken the reigns it’s literally been best available every year.

We have targeted talls in FA/trade period - just that we have managed to just scrape the bottom of the barrel with players that have no interest from other clubs (see Josh Walker, Bigoa Nyuon, CCJ, Logue)

The fact that we lost McKay and then replaced our only real Key defender with…. A medium forward lol

We had Matty Maginnes bud

Sam Frost seems to have been playing regular VFL games this year and is OOC in 2026 with the Hawks. Does this mean that we bid goodbye to Corr at 2025 end? Also would the Hawks allow him to leave given the games experience they would be losing? Depends, on Frost's expectations for 2026, would likely want to be playing weekly. Frost, Comben & Pink as a backline? What of Wil Dawson's AFL game-time? Do we think he is ready for weekly AFL games in 2026? Is Griff Logue a write-off after an average season in 2025?

I agree that we have been drafting best available, but that isn't a good thing. It just puts your list make-up down to luck of where your picks fall, it isn't really list management, it is just draft ranking. You can end up drafting a pile of short mids like we did in 2020. Or drafting Duursma when we had several good offers to trade down and take a couple of quality talls instead.

As you say, we can't attract quality players in trades or as free agents to fix our list balance. And you can't balance a list with late picks, so we end up where we are.

Corr's got another year on his contract.

Alas Logue's got two.

Unless we somehow either land a top-of-the-line key defender as a replacement, or we can find a suitor to get them off the books, why would it be worth it?

Would love to see Whitlock take the next step over the preseason, as well as Trembath and Dawson both backed in. We need to prioritise our young key position players. All have shown glimpses, if they fail and turn to shit then we are back to square one.

Targeting someone like Aleer is a waste of a list spot and holds one of our young guns out of the side.

I'm not sure Matt is ready to take the next step quite yet but the club would be more than happy at what they have seen this year and be quite comfortable with their decision to get him when they did at least on his performances so far this year.

The problem is, most quality players that would improve us are also being chased by other clubs and don't actually want to come to us.

The ones that do come to us are either propping up their superannuation fund or they're not that good and one of our youngsters have overtaken them within 12 months which leads to list clogging. Fisher and perhaps now Daniel are examples of this. We end up stuck with these guys for several years and are then forced to delist younger players who could still have improvement in them.

We just need to be more critical in our assessment of which players we try to bring to the club and make better decisions. If it means that we don't trade for anyone, then so be it.
Agree. Has to be hard workers who are desperate for a second chance (Pink) or were overlooked in the draft (Trembath) and are hungry for a chance to play AFL footy.

He's actually entered the AFL pathway to become a goalpost.
Got the height, got the weight. Don't put him in the same studio as Leigh Matthews, who might try and kill him. Red mist descending and all

In the off season he should be made to live at Monky’s residence to ensure he reaches his daily protein needs.

Unfortunately we don’t have any senior players bar maybe Parker who could take him under their wing to put on some size. Maybe send him down to Cunners farm for a couple of months over Xmas 😎

We lost McKay and picked up Wil Dawson in that draft.

I mean regardless, is paid players just off ****ing about without active engagement how a professional club runs?

Atu, Wilkinson, Stephenson, we're like Jobseeker for these blokes while our coaches and the players themselves work out what they'd like to do one day.
Nothing really surprises me anymore.

I’m sure the players on the list are all “good blokes” and would be great to have a beer with.

But **** me they operate like an amateur organisation.

There is no investment because it is not demanded from them.
We are coming from a long way back and we really do need to rebuild our culture from scratch.

We all know we don’t have the following of the Pies or Blues, but our players definitely are aware that playing for North brings with it added anonymity, which they take full advantage of.
It’s why so much random embarrassing shit happens because the general public literally has no clue who 80% of our list are.

This isn’t the best example, but I recall Sam Newman once took a photo of Adam Simpson on street talk and no one he asked knew he was the captain of North Melbourne. No one.

I know the crowd he attracts are clueless, but it’s still a football audience.

Our players also hardly ever get random drug tested by the code.
No early morning wake ups, no surprises, nothing.
And they know it too
Perks of playing for North. We can joke it’s cause we’re shit but the low profile of our players means they are generally left alone.

So they can definitely take advantage of this full knowing their opponents wearing black and white or navy blue get tracked consistently. And yes, a few of our boys exploit this. The one who did, abused the shit out of it and is no longer at the club or playing in the league.

Why can’t we play Dawson until the end of the year. It’s a joke he’s not in the team now to learn. He’s our next CHB for the next 10-15years. He’s also a campaigner which I like.
