I imagine they attract a lot of players from all over with added lure of a job in a mine for a year or two could be very lucrative. Don’t know howlong term it is though with Nick and Laughlin only lasting one year

Some young fellas leave Perth after leaving school to work on the mines for a couple of years and play Goldfields footy while they are there.
It's the easiest way for them to quickly earn some decent coin work-wise and also set themselves with an apprenticeship or a job that pays a lot more than in Perth.
I moved over from Melbourne when I was 32 to work in sports admin. I was on about 60K at the time and a month after starting there I was offered a FIFO admin role (8 days on 6 days off) by someone that was 150K, so you can see how people use the mines as a way of setting themselves up for the future. That was when a house cost about 300-350K in Perth.
If they are a decent enough footballer then they'll get a few extra bucks in the back pocket when work rosters allow them to play.
The smart ones will save their pennies for a house deposit or invest it wisely and set themselves up for the future. Many return to the coast while the others stay in Kalgoorlie for the long term.

I umpired a few U19 games when he was coaching. He didn't really use a runner - he could be heard at full tilt everywhere...

Many years ago my cricket club got him as a guest speaker at our Presentation Night because one of our players was a friend. The ladies were appalled at the number of F and C words used during his presentation, along with a lot of other words rarely used in good company. Went over like a lead balloon.

Was involved with him many years ago in a coaching capacity and certainly was an enlightening period. My experience with him certainly wasn’t one I wish to remember. He could be best described as a foul mouthed bully. Spent so much time listening to angry parents who were worried about their sons welfare due to the manner he behaved. How he was put on a pedestal as a coach was beyond me. I started in my role with him being so excited and fortunate for the opportunity and by the end I couldn’t leave quickly enough.
The manner in how he treated his assistants and players etc was unacceptable and completely against my coaching and personal principles. I know it was different times but his behaviour was totally out of line. No one could rein him in either as he had created this holy like persona.
Not someone I wish to think about.

I always found him to be a nice bloke but was never involved with him from a footy perspective.

One of my friends who played under him at Nth Melb told me there wasn't anywhere on the ground where you could escape his feedback, he could be heard anywhere. He described Slug as a man who would call a spade a F@#!&%@@, @!!#&%$& spade.
