There's a financial penalty for bringing in an unlisted emergency.

Given we only have 1 other fit ruck on the list, I'm sure it is just insurance if something happened to Goldy in the next 2 days.

The Kangaroos have thus far opted against sending Free in for season-ending surgery however that remains an option. Free has been an AFL emergency already and is averaging 23 hit-outs and almost 13 disposals in the VFL this year, but is yet to make his AFL debut.

I’d give him a 12 month contract tomorrow and send him in for shoulder surgery. He has done more than enough this year to suggest that he is at a minimum a solid depth option.

"His follow-up assessment with imaging and the specialist has shown insufficient healing of that shoulder injury that would enable high long-term function," White said.

"He will undergo shoulder surgery in the coming week officially ending his playing prospects for the remainder of the 2023 season."
