Playing up forward, Burgoyne had 10 disposals and kicked three goals, while applying considerable pressure with four tackles. He and Wingard proved to be a great double-act for the Hawks in the forward line as the Hawks upset the Lions by 28 points at the MCG, albeit with no crowd in attendance.

For so long Hawthorn's Mr Fix-it, Burgoyne simply couldn't get his game going and was one of six Hawthorn players to finish the game with less than 10 disposals by his name.
