It is not a fitness issue. Where players run to and how they expend their energy might be questionable, but they are super fit.
The comment above on playing ‘flat’ structure is probably a reason.

We have to run really hard to make options forward of the ball. And when turnover comes (as it has a lot this year) we’ve possibly pushed too far up and don’t have much left to push back as hard.

Last year we were managing to score a bit more which stops the play - this year ball is coming back with interest and we’re being caught out a lot making defence look like a shambles.

Also last year we found ways to get ball out the back a lot on scores (which is efficient and only needs a handful of guys to make space) - it’s rarely happening this year as opposition is camping in centre and possibly sitting back a bit on defence which is likely drawing more numbers forward.

He is not quick enough!
The game has got faster in my opinion!
Every club wants quick transition and Moore and Morrison have the work ethic but they don’t have the gears and getting worked over.
Chad and Bruest are in the same boat aswell.

Don’t put Moore with the other three

Morrison doesn’t have an extra gear, Breust is getting older and Wingard is cooked. Moore isn’t that.

How does Oliver not get fined for staging? Why even have that rule if they aren't going to enforce it.
The unfortunate issue is that the biggest stagers are generally the stars of the league, who the AFL generally go to great lengths to protect and avoid an embarrassment with the Brownlow.

For mine the biggest difference between the two teams was their forwards ability to compete every time the ball went forward. And our inability to do the same.

Unless we get a near perfect entry forward we don’t look like scoring. Which good teams just don’t allow due to their defensive pressure.

Whereas the dees knew they just had to get the ball forward and their forwards would score or lock the ball in and give them time to set up for repeat entries.

It’s easy to look at the inside 50 numbers and assume our forwards didn’t get the chance to compete. But our inside 50 numbers are so low because our forwards don’t compete.

We often give them the first look at the ball by winning the centre clearances but they fail to win or neutralise the ball. Resulting in it going up the other end. As well as offering no targets to move the ball out of our d50 leading to many repeat entries and the lopsided inside 50 counts we are seeing.
Bloody hell Fritsch was good

Sitting up in the nosebleeds at the game, one thing that really stuck out was the difference in structure when either team had the ball behind half way.

Melbourne had options and dynamic running everywhere. We had none of that, setting up very flat almost soccer like. Our mids would do some great grunt work, get the ball, get free and look up to absolutely nothing.

It reminded me of the wallabies under Cheika and McKenzie - we had tge ability to break the line, but then there would be no support pod following to secure the ruck or take a pass/offload. It’s the same here, we win the ball but then there is no support further up, leaving whoever has it with a series of poor options.

Was exactly the same the previous week against Freo at Optus. Freo simply outworked us and presented options where we were flat and stagnate offering very little up the ground.

Anyone know what Hunter did to get a fine?

The AFL website said unsporting behaviour and can see he was on the interchange area.

Leant over the boundary line and yelled at Weddle as he ran passed with the ball, as Hunter was off the ground.
